With the hidden gem ones as well. My whole family loves going here! Stayed 2x thos yr. and booked 9 days next july and some in oct. close enough to home so my husband can comuit for work as well. Baker Rocks had a host of different camping options onsite including tent platforms, yurts, and cabins. I booked one of the tent platforms.
The site had a large tent platform they could fit multiple tents, a brand new picnic table, a fire ring (with a free bundle of firewood), two chairs by the fire ring, and even a few strings of solar lights around the camp area.
The tent sites are within the wooded area around the property and felt very secluded. There was a bit of road noise overnight.
The facilities here were great. There is a full bathhouse with individual rooms for showers and sink/toilets, with running water.
Around the campground there was a little beach along the Baker river. I only caught a few minnows when fishing but that may have been more to do with the angler. Along another bend of the river were two chairs for taking in the scenery.
Check-in was super easy with the camp hosts who were very flexible with timing and wanted to make sure I had a great stay. The property and individual sites are deliberately designed with guests in mind.
I would definitely stay here again if I’m in the area and might try some of the glamping options as well.

Tucked away in what feels like the middle of nowhere New Hampshire is it's largest state park. Bear Brook is full of trails, ponds and a fairly large campground. This extremely family-friendly campground comes equip with trails, play structures, camp store, beach, and even a small baseball diamond. The sites are fairly large and if you need some privacy, reserve site 12. There is a great trail that is around Beaver Pond, roughly 2-3 miles with plenty of opportunities for dogs to swim, yeah for dog friendly! This campground is beautiful, quiet in places and has everything you need for a great weekend away!

Great, well maintained campground! The sites are close together but most spots are tucked neatly among the trees so it still feels like you're in the woods. Other campers were very friendly and respectful; we were there for the Fourth of July. Bathrooms are modern and clean.
We stayed in a "rustic" yurt (#47) - which had no water or electricity, but there was a spigot and outlet right across the road at the bathroom. The yurt itself was well appointed, with things like bedding, a trash can, and even a privacy screen. We brought sleeping bags to use, and ended up using them anyway.
$90/night might seem expensive for a campground, but considering this is so close to Ogunquit and the beaches, it's worth every penny for those who aren't looking to tent (or can't) and don't have a trailer.

We visited this with our dog Oakley for his first time camping last fall. It was nice and quite because of the time of year and was perfect because we didn't know how he was going to do. He absolutely loved it and there was plenty of space in the tent site for him to roam around. This campground is one of the first campgrounds on the kancamangus which makes it extremely accessible for most. The site offers basic ammentities such as clean toilets. The swift river is in walking distance and offers a great place to relax after a long day in the New Hampshire woods. All in all it is a great local site like most run by the White Mountain Forest Service.

TravelerOur family of 4 visited Baker Rocks during a very rainy week and still had an amazing time. The campsites are private and spacious, the property is large and beautiful, close to the river. The owners are so kind and accommodating. We stayed 2 nights in the double bell tent with two clean full size beds and a 3rd night in the yurt both were spacious and wonderful, among tall trees and pines. Definitely will be back next summer! They even have animals to visit like bunnies and goats (far away from the campsites).Do bring bug spray, the mosquitoes at certain times of day were aggressive, as to be expected.

We are seasoned RV'ers and have traveled extensively visiting campgrounds all over the East Coast. In all the years we have been camping we have NEVER been treated so horribly. The owners are by far the nastiest people I have ever met. Our son owns a very popular business in the same town. He also lives right up the road from the campground. We were visiting for 4 days excited to spend some time with our grandkids. We were hoping to spend a couple of hours on Saturday with the kids by the pool. Something I told the owner when I called to book. He never once mentioned extra fees. He also said he would be happy to put us by the pool. It all started the first night when we had our son, daughter in law and one grandchild for dinner. They wanted to charge my daughter in law$115 to visit. I went up to the office and tried to explain that they would be there only about an hour for dinner. They said for them to visit for 4 days that was the charge. I tried to explain that they would only be having dinner that night and Friday night. The kids were in camp all day so no kids would be with us during the day. They let them in for an hour. The next morning, the husband was out by the pool, so I went over to try and talk to him. I let him know that we would probably not be there very much during the four days or it would only be for dinners. We had hoped to have the kids for a couple hours on Saturday to use the pool so I offered to pay for that. He got very defensive and told me that campers like Me didn't belong in his campground, and that he he was a small local company and they all work together in that town. I replied well, if you all work together then obviously, you don't work with certain businesses because my son owns one of the best businesses in the town. He told me if I didn't like it that he would give me my money back. I went back to the RV and spoke to my husband called my son. My son said mom just get out of there and go to my house. As I was packing up to leave, he came along with his golf cart, and his wife and I had my back to him and I turned and told him we were leaving. He had my check in his hand and gave it back to me. And told me to get out and then the wife got out and started using the F word She was so nasty that we couldn't wait to get out of there since then we've read a lot of negative reviews similar to our experience. All I can say is if you want to go camping in Thornton, New Hampshire don't go to Goose Hollow campground. If you're an outsider you will be treated like trash. We have camped many times at Branch Brook campground in Campton New Hampshire, which is right down the street. We made a big mistake choosing GOOSE HOLLOW this time. The kicker is that the pamphlet that they give you when you arrive with the map it says on the pamphlet if you have overnight guests you're allowed four adults and two children total. The extra adults would pay$10 apiece and the children would pay five dollars apiece but that was for OVERNIGHT only. Not at any time did we plan to have guests overnight. Also, we booked(and paid for) a site which would've included two adults and two children. We ended up here as a last resort before having to turn home. After getting a late start to our hike we didn't pull into our first campsite choice until 630. On a July saturday evening in the New Hampshire White Mountains, not a good thing. All 5 campgrounds on the kancamangus were full and we had to resort to White Ledge, about 6 miles past the kancamangus. Luckily there were a few sites left, and for good reason. The sites were decent enough and the facilities clean. However the proximity to the busy road was unfortunate. We could here cars the entire night which was a little annoying. Overall if you need to camp in a pinch because everything is busy it's not a bad option, just not the best.

On the upside I got to try this awesome lantern that I won from TheDyrt last month! This lantern is perfect for car camping - a little too bulky for backpacking. Firstly, it seemed to hold a good charge throughout the entire time. It was also extremely bright and lite up the entire site for us. It had an option for a directional light which was good because we got there late and we're trying not to bug the site next to us. It was not as bright on the directional setting (kinda obvious) but still did the trick. It feels like it is going to be quite rugged and I love the stand it has on it. The ability to charge something with it is awesome, and to crank it if you lost a charge. Very interested to try both of these options in the future. The one thing I was disappointed with is there is no clip I could find to hang it from the tent. You can clip on the stand but it hangs lopsided, not a deal breaker by any means. Overall this is a great lantern and would definitely recommend it! Thanks Dyrt!
LegendLovely wooded campground where you can swim, hike, kayak, bike, canoe, fish, boulder, geocache and explore to your heart's content. Generally large and level sites, many with water access, Make your reservation well in advance if you're planning to visit during peak season or if you want a prime waterfront site. Sites on Horse Island will cost you $5 more than those on Big Island, but many of the sites are directly on the water, making it easy to slip your boat into the lake from your site. There's a campers only boat launch on Horse Island. Much of the lake is better suited to paddle craft rather than motor boats due to it's shallow nature and rocks. The an expansive beach as well, a camp store and boat rentals.
I've had a weekend when my neighbors were playing loud music all afternoon and stumbled drunk through my campsite after dark and other weekends when it was hard to tell there was anyone around.
Driving around this past weekend I did notice that some of the sites had damp spots; site 71 was the worst with deep mud on the long approach. Site 73 is near the bath house, but it has a long approach that provides a little privacy and it's higher than the surrounding sites with water access. Sites in the 3-15 range are waterfront, but they're higher off the water. Site 43-45 are great. Those along the southern edge of Horse Island offer a more level entry. Roads are narrow and many of the site entrances are narrow with rock/tree obstructions in places that may make backing in more of a challenge to thsoe with trailers or RVs. No hookups.
The bath houses are tired, but they offer free showers. Would love to see them renovated and brightened up. Big Island also has cabins available. Phone coverage is poor (Verizon); can usually get texts out. If you want to geocache, download the info for offline use!
If you are used to camping with pets, you'll need to visit outside of peak season as they are not allowed in the campground Memorial Day to Columbus Day and never on the beach.
It has a longer season than many campgrounds in New Hampshire, running to the end of October, and you can generally get a site last minute if you're waiting on the weather and don't need/want a water site. Its proximity to Boston makes it great for a quick getaway.

My family (my wife, two young sons and I) recently stayed here for a short getaway. As a side note, we had planned to stay here last year, but had to cancel. Having said that, I am more than happy with our choice to come to this jewel of a campground.
Located between the Ellis River and the Saco River, this campground offers so many fantastic amenities. One of the biggest ones that we took lots of advantage of is the swimming and tubing on the Saco River. Our campsite was located fairly close to the river and where you could put in to tube down river. One of the fun things about this is that at the far end of the campground is a place to take out. They have tubes to rent right there which was very handy. The campground also boasts a swimming pool, beach area along the Saco River, free mini golf, playground, golf cart rentals, a fully outfitted camp store and more. Typically when we camp in the White Mountains we like to get out and explore a lot; this is the first time we never left the campground.
The sites were nice and big, we reserved one that had water and electric as we have some new camping gear we wanted to try out. The campground itself was well maintained, plenty of restrooms and shower facilities spread throughout. The camp staff were very pleasant and knowledgeable. In fact after checking in, one of the camp staff came by because they had forgotten to remind us to take care of our food and gear at night as there are black bears in the area. I appreciated the extra care taken to pass along that information.
The campground switched over from a local family owned place to be under the Jellystone family. They have lots of activities to do during the day, especially for the kids. There are a lot of campgrounds in the area that bill themselves as family campgrounds, but really aren't. This is place truly is a great family campground.
As a side note, I want to also make a note about COVID-19 safety practices. There were lots of signs reminding campers to keep socially distant and recommended face masks. However, there were many folks who did not have masks on, including staff. New Hampshire doesn't have a mask mandate at the time of this review. I will say that our family felt safe and took our own precautions, but the campground has done a lot as well. This does not impact my overall review of the campground, I simply wanted to share this piece as it is relevant for those who may want to know.

Dixon’s Campground is located on US Route 1 in Cape Neddick, Maine, just minutes from the coast and about an hour south of Portland. Dixson’s Campground is a medium sized private campground that has tent only and water& electric tent/RV sites, as well as three yurts. The campground also has full hook up sites for seasonal guest that sit out on a separate area away from the transit campers. I have included a campground map in my pictures for your orientation. Most sites are wooded with lots of shade. There are a few grass sites with more sun near the office. The sites vary from small and close together to large with some privacy. All style sites include a picnic table and fire ring.
Check-in was easy and the staff was very helpful in providing info and answering questions about the area. A host guides you to your site and assist you in positioning if needed. The campground is gated and you have to“rent” a swipe card to access the gate for$10 (cash) and you get your$10 back when you return the card at checkout. The roads in the campground are a little skinny so if you have a large trailer you may want to consider your site location appropriately or you may get stuck in a curve or have a challenging time backing into your site. We stayed on site 84 on this visit. The site was level and well shaded, but small yet worked with our teardrop trailer.
The bathroom were new and very unique here (I have never experienced this style before; see my pictures). The bathroom closest to us had two toilet stalls and two shower stalls each with their own direct outside access. Sinks for hygiene were on one end of the bathroom and sinks designated for dish washing only were on the other side of the building. The Bathrooms and showers were very clean. The showers are metered and cost $0.50 per 5 minutes, so don’t forget your quarters! There is also a trash dumpster and recycle bins at each bathroom.
Firewood and a small camp store was available at the office. There is a full grocery store about 10 minutes away.
We found good cell phone service with Verizon throughout the property. The campground did have wi-fi and it worked ok at our site.
The campground also has a heated pool, playground, and outfitter that provides rentals, lessons, and guides. There is no laundry at the campground, but we found one about 10 minutes away.
Dixon’s sits between two tourist towns so there is plenty to see, lots of great restaurants, and close to beaches. Many restaurants are dog friendly (at least on the patio) and the beaches at this time of year are dog friendly after 6PM. We really enjoyed walking the beaches and checking out the lighthouses in the area. The only down side of being near two tourist towns is that traffic can get thick at some points in the day.
We really enjoyed our stay at Dixon’s and the surrounding area to the point we have marked this as a definite stop when we make it back to Maine again.

As a Ranger for The Dyrt, I get to test products. At this campground, I tested the Red Ledge Thunderlight Jacket. This rain jacket from Red Ledge is very handy to have in your gear list. It is available in multiple colors (I got black because I somehow get dirty while camping) and is very lightweight. There is no liner so works great in the summertime heat, but is still loose enough to wear a fleece or something underneath. I also like that there are multiple draw strings to tighten up the fit if desired (waist, cuffs, hood, and headband). The pockets are large, deep, and close with zippers. The jacket also comes with a stuff sack so you can roll it up and easily stow it in your day pack or pocket in your car. We did experience light to heavy rain during periods of our stay and the jacket is highly effective and I had no soak throughs even the heaviest rain. I highly recommend this jacket and it’ll be a part of my normal outdoor gear set.

The area for RVs needs more trees!
The beach for the registered campers is lovely, and it has a lovely view of the Lake. But there is no shade or privacy between RV sites.
The showers require coins to operate, so we only used the restrooms.
We spent most of our time at the State Beach, there is a bridge that spans the RV site to the public beach. We really liked this portion of the park.
GuideThe camping is a large open area (no shade) with RVs lined up. There are full hook-ups and if you plan to only use the bathroom and shower in your RV it is likely fine. The showers are horrific. There are two different shower rooms, with two showers each. While we were there one whole room was labeled “out of order”. In the other, only one of the coin operated showers was working. So, only one shower for the entire campground. The shower area was FILLED with with bugs and spiders. We unfortunately had to kill one spider that was dangling from the ceiling into the shower we were trying to use. The kids screamed the whole time.
The lake water was deemed to high in bacteria to swim in while we were there, but the natives were swimming anyway, so we did too. The beach was nice and if it wasn’t for the bacteria concern we’d have enjoyed it even more. (Bacteria is why we didn’t skip the shower.)
The view was gorgeous.

Electric (30 and 50amp), water, satellite and cable hookups as well as tank dump hookups at each site. 6 months is only 2300$ + elec. 🤯 open in the winter for $400/mo. + elec.
