Several other campgrounds populate the region, including Spacious Skies French Pond in Henniker and Bear Brook State Park Campground in Deerfield, catering to both overnight visitors and seasonal campers. The area's mix of privately owned campgrounds and state park facilities creates diverse accommodation choices for various camping preferences.

Most campgrounds in the Contoocook area operate seasonally from May through October, with specific opening and closing dates varying by location. "The campground is very friendly... a lot of seasonal folks. We had a nice corner site which fit our 34' rig just fine," noted one visitor to Sandy Beach Campground. Access to most sites is straightforward with paved or maintained gravel roads suitable for passenger vehicles and RVs. Many campgrounds offer full hookup sites with electric, water, and sewer connections, though tent-only areas are also available at most facilities. Reservations are strongly recommended, particularly for summer weekends and holidays when campgrounds frequently reach capacity.

Waterfront camping represents a significant draw to the Contoocook area, with many campgrounds situated on ponds or lakes. Kayaking, canoeing, and fishing opportunities exist at several facilities, including Sandy Beach and Keyser Pond campgrounds. Visitors frequently mention clean facilities and family-friendly atmospheres, though some note that sites can be close together, particularly in the more developed campgrounds. One camper reported that "Small but well organized campground... Sandy beach by the water has plenty of room to relax out in the sun as well as launch areas to set out in a paddle boat, canoe or row boat." Campground amenities typically include showers, bathrooms, camp stores, and recreational facilities like playgrounds, while several also offer organized activities during peak season weekends.

      Gunstock Campground

Apparently Your Reserved Site Is More of a Suggestion

⭐**Gunstock Campground: Apparently Your Reserved Site Is More of a Suggestion**

I don't believe I have**ever** left a negative Google review. I generally think that when something goes wrong, you contact the business, give them an opportunity to make it right, and most businesses are genuinely interested in doing exactly that.

Gunstock Campground has cured me of that quaint notion.

I reserved a full-hookup campsite for two nights. I was unable to make it there the first night, but arrived shortly after 7:00 a.m. the next morning. The camp store, where registration takes place, wasn't open yet, so I headed out for my planned hike— about six miles through the Belknaps, including summiting Rowe twice and Gunstock.

By the time I returned, I was utterly exhausted, starving, and actually feeling weak. My ambitions for the afternoon were modest:**eat something, take a shower, and collapse at the campsite I had paid for.**

The staff at the camp store greeted me warmly, checked me in, and sent me on my way.

I drove to my site. There was already a camper in it. Not merely*parked* there, mind you. They had apparently moved right in. They were hooked up to**my site's water and electric**, with water spraying from their ill-fitting hose connection and forming a rather impressive puddle underneath the camper.

I returned to the camp store to report that someone had apparently activated Gunstock's new**"Choose Any Site You Like"** camping plan. A staff member went down to speak with them and came back to tell me they were "packing up." Excellent! My mistake was assuming" packing up" meant**leaving**. It did not.

Apparently these campers had actually reserved a site**two rows away** that had**no water or electric**. Yet somehow, sometime after arriving the previous night, they had accidentally found themselves two rows over, in my clearly different site, connected to utilities their reservation didn't include.

We've all made mistakes. I've occasionally parked one space away from where I intended. I've never accidentally parked**two rows away, hooked myself up to someone else's electricity and water, and spent the night.**

      But perhaps I lack imagination.

After they had now consumed about an hour of my afternoon— which, incidentally, is an hour I normally bill at attorney rates— I went back toward my site expecting to find it finally vacated.

And it was! Because Gunstock had moved these folks to another site**two spaces away from me**, apparently allowing them to pay for the upgrade they had already been test-driving. So the people who knowingly or unknowingly occupied my reserved full-hookup site, used the utilities, and delayed me from getting into the site I paid for were rewarded with...a nearby full-hookup site.

They never walked over to apologize. At that point, I no longer felt comfortable staying. It's difficult to relax at a campground when you've just discovered that site assignments appear to operate somewhat on the honor system— and that when someone helps themselves to your reserved site and utilities, management's solution is apparently to make sure *they* remain comfortably accommodated nearby. So I left. On my way home, I called Gunstock and asked for a refund. Surely, I thought, this would be the easy part. After all, I had paid for two nights, hadn't used the first, couldn't get into my site when I arrived for the second, waited while unauthorized occupants vacated it, and ultimately left because the entire experience had become so unpleasant.

Nope. Instead, the staff member **defended the other campers**. I was told they arrived late and "mistakenly" took my site. I was even told they supposedly **hadn't used the utilities**. This was particularly fascinating information for me to receive because **I PERSONALLY SAW THEM HOOKED UP TO THE WATER AND ELECTRIC.** I also took photographs. Including the enormous puddle underneath their camper from the leaking water connection. But apparently my eyewitness account and photographs were no match for the alternative version of events.

For my inconvenience, however, Gunstock did give me a coupon for a **free Bavarian pretzel**. So there is that.

I paid for a full-hookup campsite. Someone else occupied it and used the hookups. I lost roughly an hour waiting to access what I had reserved. The other campers were accommodated with an upgraded site nearby. I left because I no longer felt comfortable staying. And when I asked Gunstock to make the situation right, they refused to refund me and instead argued with me about things **I had personally witnessed and photographed**. The most disappointing part isn't that another camper took my site. Campers can behave badly. Businesses can't control everything their customers do. **What a business CAN control is how it responds when that happens. ** Gunstock had every opportunity to turn this into a mildly annoying story about a camping mix-up. Instead, they turned it into my first negative Google review.

But hey... **I do have that free pretzel coupon.**

      Lake Dennison Recreation Area Campground

      Stayed twice

The first time we stayed here, we were in a different site. It was fine, but not near the water. This time, we chose a site near the water, but it's literally surrounded by three other sites. It's not shown like that on the map. We had to drive through someone else's setup to get to our site. There's no privacy as there was in our previous site. This is one of the few state parks in Massachusetts with a dump station

      Berry's Grove Campground

      Our Site Was Easy

We stopped at Berry’s Grove while traveling through Massachusetts and were really happy with our stay. The hookups were convenient, our site was easy to get into, and having water and sewer right there made things simple.

      Kids Stayed Entertained

We brought the kids here for a few days and they had a blast. Between swimming, exploring around the campground, and just riding around and making friends, they always had something to do. For us, it was nice being able to actually relax while the kids stayed entertained. We cooked at the campsite most nights and spent the evenings around the fire. Great family trip.

      Berry's Grove Campground

Getting Settled Was Quick And Easy

Berry’s Grove was exactly what we were looking for. It is small, peaceful, and right on the water. We brought our RV and had everything we needed at the site, so getting settled was quick and easy. We especially liked being able to spend the afternoon by the lake without having to drive anywhere. It feels tucked away but you are still close enough to town if you need groceries or want to grab something to eat. Really nice campground for a relaxing weekend.

      Crow's Nest Campground

      Our Favorite Part Of Staying

The Sugar River was probably our favorite part of staying here. There is something really relaxing about waking up, making coffee, and being able to walk down by the river first thing in the morning. We spent our days fishing, hanging around the campground, and exploring the area. Crow’s Nest has a classic New Hampshire campground feel and we would definitely come back.

      Berry's Grove Campground

      Really Enjoyed Our Stay

We really enjoyed our stay at Berry’s Grove. It is a smaller campground, which gave it a much quieter and more relaxed feel than some of the bigger RV parks we have stayed at. Being right on the lake was definitely the highlight for us. We spent a lot of time sitting by the water and fishing off the dock. Our site was clean and the full hookups made everything easy. It was a nice place to slow down for a few days and we would definitely stay again.

      Autumn Hills Campground

      Autumn hills

Beautiful campground. Private spaces. Staff is very friendly.

    Guide to Contoocook

Seasonal camping near Contoocook, New Hampshire ranges from rugged tent sites to full-service RV resorts across elevations of 400-600 feet. The region experiences distinct seasonal changes with mid-summer temperatures averaging 80°F during the day and 60°F at night. Water activities draw many visitors, though several campgrounds impose specific restrictions on pond usage and swimming areas due to seasonal conditions.

    What to do

Hiking and biking trails: Bear Brook State Park Campground offers extensive trail networks for mountain bikers and hikers. "The biking trails were a blast. We'll definitely be back again," notes one visitor who appreciated being able to "ride right off the campground and onto the trails."

Animal encounters: Friendly Beaver Campground maintains a small petting zoo. "We enjoyed their small but nice petting zoo of a few goats and a horse," mentions a reviewer who found this activity particularly appealing for young children.

Fishing opportunities: Oxbow Campground has multiple ponds designated for different activities. "They have 3 separate ponds-one for fishing, one for boating & the larger one is for swimming," reports a camper who used the facilities. Another visitor noted, "The fishing pond was perfect. I will be returning soon."

Water recreation: At Spacious Skies French Pond, visitors can enjoy a substantial body of water. One camper described it as "French Pond I'm guessing is at least 25 acres" and another mentioned wishing they "had more time to rent a kayak" during their stay.

    What campers like

Clean bathroom facilities: Multiple campgrounds receive high marks for bathroom cleanliness. At Oxbow Campground, visitors note that "Tom takes great care to keep the grounds and the bathrooms/showers very clean." Another camper stated they were "the cleanest campground bathrooms I've ever been to."

Privacy between sites: Greenfield State Park Campground offers more secluded sites. "The camping spots are spread out enough that you feel like you have privacy, even if you have neighbors," explains one camper. Another noted the "Large park. Good sized sites with plenty of shade and decent privacy."

Pool options: Cold Springs Camp Resort stands out with numerous swimming options. "7 pools which (include 2 hot tubs, a small 2x2 pool for kiddos, 1 adult only pool and 3 family pools)," details one reviewer who appreciates the variety. Another camper simply stated "Great campground. The pools are amazing. Kid pools. Adult pools! Adult hot tub."

Camp store convenience: Most established campgrounds maintain well-stocked stores. One visitor to Friendly Beaver Campground mentioned "their general store was adequate," while another camper at Oxbow noted the convenience of having supplies available on-site.

    What you should know

Site spacing concerns: At several campgrounds, proximity to neighbors can be an issue. One camper at Keyser Pond Campground shared: "The tent sites are wicked small, packed together and so close to the highway you don't get an ounce of quiet."

Seasonal camper population: Many campgrounds host primarily seasonal residents. At Autumn Hills Campground, a visitor observed that "it seems like the majority of the sites are seasonals." This can affect the atmosphere and availability for short-term stays.

Road noise: Location near highways affects some campgrounds. A Keyser Pond visitor noted sites are "so close to the highway you don't get an ounce of quiet," while another mentioned "you can also hear the main road from the open style campsite."

Reservation requirements: Campgrounds fill quickly, especially on weekends. At Bear Brook, one camper mentioned that "During the peak season, I'm sure it's a different story given its proximity to Concord and Manchester and the variety of activities available."

    Tips for camping with families

Activity schedules: Many campgrounds run organized events for children. At Autumn Hills Campground, "They do plan and host activities and events for the weekends." A visitor noted there were "a bunch of families and everyone seemed to be in good spirits."

Playground access: Consider site location relative to play areas. One Bear Brook visitor advised: "I'd avoid site 93 because it is so close to the playground and the fire ring placement makes it seem like families enjoying the playground will be tempted to walk through your site. If you want to be close to the play area, site 90 or the ones on the loop behind it are better options."

Swimming options for different ages: Bear Brook State Park Campground offers swimming areas appropriate for various age groups. "She enjoyed the playgrounds both at the campground and at the Catamount Pond beach. There's another beach in the campground itself," noted a visitor who camped with a 5-year-old.

Weather preparedness: Temperatures can vary significantly between day and night, even in summer. "The staff is friendly. Don't forget the flashlight. There is very little lighting to find your way around the winding roads of the campground which adds to the charm," advised a Spacious Skies French Pond visitor.

    Tips from RVers

Site accessibility: Some campgrounds have challenging access for larger vehicles. At Autumn Hills, a camper noted: "Sites are on the small side, but it worked just fine. We stayed at site 14 needed a very long sewer hose."

Turning radius concerns: Bear Brook presents some navigation challenges. "I had to be careful to swing wide at the corner," advised one camper with a small trailer, adding that "the little loop to my campsite was tight to exit (I was towing a 14' teardrop, not a big trailer)."

Hookup considerations: Keyser Pond Campground offers full hookup sites with reasonable rates. "We paid $25 for a FHU site with that discount, so double that for normal rates," explained a visitor using Passport America. The camper also noted "Sites not fully level but leveling blocks took care of it."

Internet availability: WiFi access varies significantly between campgrounds. At Keyser Pond, "There's good free wifi at camp, and good cell reception with Verizon and ATT," while other campgrounds charge additional fees for connectivity.
