    Tower Campground

    Friendly but noisy

Very friendly and accommodating staff. This park is open year round and well set up for cold weather, the water spigot is heated so if you invest in a heated water line and have an insulated camper you should be good for the cold. Many units were tucked in for winter with skirting and large external propane tanks. The negatives are noise and lights. Highway noise was very very loud. Easy to see outside but not a lot of camp feel. Bright light through skylites while sleeping. Didn’t use bathrooms or showers so no comment on facilities.

    Tower Campground

    Nice sites nice staff

The spots are good size and most are shared asphalt pads where your rear end faces your neighbors rear end. However you don’t share a pedestal or any other hookups with them. Our site had a water hook up that was equipped with a heater on the spigot for cold weather.

    Schreier's On Shetek Campground

    Great Park, Mostly Seasonals

We visited here before the fishing opener, so while most of the spots were occupied by long term RVs, very few people around. We were told from fishing opener until the fall the place is busy. Family owned and operated park. Amenities include playground, fish cleaning house, paddleboat and canoe rentals, hiking trails.

    Sioux Falls KOA

    Good travel stop

We stayed on our way from IL to Black Hills SD. Super easy access as well as easy pull through. Level enough to not unhook. Nice play area and pool. Also a neat little micro brewery walking distance, across the road. Very nice staff and an RV dealer next door. Very close to I-90 and it’s noise, but that comes with the easy access.

    Blue Mounds State Park Campground

    Site 13

Stayed at Blue Mounds on one of the hottest weekends this summer! We booked site 12 initially based off of reviews from the Dyrt suggesting riverside sites. Site 11 and 12 were NOT good. There's a dumpster in the middle of the two sites, absolutely no privacy, and no shade. Thankfully, there is good cell service (and free wifi!), and we looked up what other sites were open. 13 was open! And boy did we luck out with this. Even though it's just adjacent, 13 had a nice little secluded area for our tent, and a *private* riverside walk out to the cliffs overlooking the river! No direct river access- it's about a 15 foot drop to the river. The moonrise from this site was gorgeous. Had a spooky visit from the Starlink satellites. We drove in the morning to the bison area and saw about 12 of them roaming near the fence.  Bathrooms were decent. Close by to Luverne for any last minute needs while camping.

Guide to Pipestone

Pipestone RV options extend beyond the main campgrounds along Hiawatha Avenue, with several alternatives within a 50-mile radius. The surrounding prairie region maintains moderate summer temperatures averaging 80°F during peak camping months, though evening temperatures can drop into the 50s even in July. Most campgrounds in the area sit at elevations between 1,650-1,750 feet above sea level with minimal tree coverage across the open landscape.

What to do

Hiking at Split Rock Creek: Palisades State Park Campground offers distinctive quartzite rock formations along hiking trails. "South Dakota is known for its well-maintained state park campgrounds, and this area offers two great options: King and Queen. Queen is nestled in a wooded area with limited visibility to the sky, offering a more secluded experience," notes visitor Tim R.

Water activities: River of the Double Bend Campground provides kayak rentals for paddling adventures. "We rented kayaks and went up river, then floated to our camp site. Half way we ran out of beer - AND THEY BROUGHT US SOME!!! Love, love, love this place," shares Laura R. about this unique water-based camping option.

Disc golf course: Big Sioux Recreation Area includes an on-site disc golf course among its recreational options. "This campsite was great! Beautiful hiking trails, play grounds, disc golf, volleyball net, and so much more," writes Nathan L. about the diverse activities available at this recreation area.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Sioux Falls KOA maintains well-kept bathroom and shower facilities. "The showers were great if you don't want to use your own in your camper, but they have laundry and such if you need it. We were close to the showers, pet area and laundry house," explains Angie G., highlighting the convenience of the amenities.

Kid-friendly environments: Pipestone Family Campground receives positive feedback for its family orientation. "Campground was nearly full of local campers but the kids played great together. Decent pool & showers, fun activities like bags tournaments and a potluck," reports S G. about the social atmosphere.

Budget-friendly options: Magnolia City Campground offers affordable full-hookup sites. "For $15 this is a great place to stop while driving I90," notes Art S. Another camper, Jesse H., confirms the value: "I would like to check it out in season. Couldn't pass it up for full hook ups on October 30th. And the price is only $15.00."

What you should know

Seasonal operations: Most campgrounds in the area operate between May and October, with limited services outside this window. Big Sioux Recreation Area remains open year-round but with reduced amenities in winter. "I don't think I'll be going back. I spent the night here and had to pay the entrance fee to the park as well as the camping fee for my tentsite," explains Carolyn M. about the fee structure.

Reservation requirements: During summer weekends, particularly holiday periods, advance bookings are essential at all campgrounds within 30 miles of Pipestone. Some locations like Magnolia City Campground operate on first-come, first-served basis: "The first-come, first-served / self-pay system other great for us. We pulled in at 7:00 pm and left at 8 am," notes Jessica B.

Site spacing considerations: Some RV parks feature close quarters between units. "Pull thu sites are just big enough for truck and camper," reports Jon C. about Sioux Falls Yogi Bear, indicating the limited space at some locations.

Tips for camping with families

Playground proximity: Request sites near play areas when traveling with children. "Our stay here was perfect! We requested a specific site and they were very accommodating. We got a spot right in front of the playground which was perfect for our toddler," recommends Laura C. from her experience at Sioux Falls KOA.

Group activities: Several campgrounds organize community events throughout the camping season. Sioux Falls Yogi Bear receives particular praise for its programming: "Our family spent a long weekend here enjoying all of the activities they had to offer. Everything from laser tag to chocolate milk chugging contests," shares Alec S.

Comfortable cabin options: For families without camping equipment, several parks offer cabin rentals. "We stayed in the TeePee and it was definitely an experience our family will cherish forever," writes Alison R. about her unique accommodation at Sioux Falls KOA.

Tips from RVers

Hookup access: Electric and water connections at some campgrounds require extended hoses or cords. At Magnolia City Campground, "The electrical and water are a little spaced out. We took the end spot and count quite reach our two water hoses," notes Jessica B., suggesting bringing extension equipment.

Leveling challenges: Several rv camping areas near Pipestone, Minnesota feature sites requiring adjustment. "The campground has leveling was tricky on our pull-through spot," mentions a camper about their experience with uneven terrain.

Transit convenience: Red Barn RV and Campground provides a strategic overnight option. "Nice secluded campground yet 10 min from Sioux Falls," says Danette A., highlighting its accessibility while maintaining distance from highway noise and city lights.
