Lac qui Parle Upper Campground — Lac qui Parle State Park

    Spacious and tranquil

Lots of space between sites. There are not many trees so not much shade. Sites are gravel and relatively level, not much leveling required. Variety of sites, from group camping, primitive (no hookups), electric only, full hookups (water, electric, sewer) as well as cabins and tent only areas. Limited hiking trails connected to campground. Surrounded on two sides by farm fields and Lac Qui Parle Lake on another. There are two loops in the campground. One loop has view of the lake. Boat/canoe launch is in lower campground about 10 minutes from Upper Campground. Recycling and garbage dumpsters on site. Dump station near entrance. Verizon cell signal is poor. Pit toilets available. Bathhouse is centrally located, includes private showers. No laundry on site. Nearby attractions in Montevideo include Talking Waters Brewery/taproom, Jake’s pizza and Java River cafe (with outdoor seating, dog friendly).

    Sinclair Lewis City Campground

    Small town

My extended family has gatherings here a couple times a year as it is close to everybody and a great location! The campground is open for the season from May 1st to October 1st each year, weather permitting.

Reasons we like this campground: lakefront sites are available, the town is small so pretty quiet but there are gas stations, restaurants, and stores (including Walmart), it is close to home for everybody so this tends to be the first trip of the year to get water in everything and make sure there are no fun surprises after wintering the campers for 5 to 6 months, has bathrooms, there is a walking trail close to the campground that goes around part of the lake.

Additional details and amenities: 80 sites, 52 sites with full hookup which include water, sewer and electricity and 24 sites with water and electricity only and 4 primitive sites. All campsites contain a fire pit. Three sets of restrooms are contained within the campground with showers. Other amenities include: picnic tables, storm shelter, dump station, fish cleaning house, kayak rental, lake access with boat ramp and docks. Public beach, splash pad, bike trail, and playground adjacent.

    Masonic West River Park

    Riverfront!!

Amazing campsite! Sites are large and grassy! We had a lakeview site right off the paved walking/biking trail with room for a large tent and the pop-up camper. Fire ring and picnic table provided. A man drives through the campsite close to dusk to sell firewood as there is no traditional office. Bathrooms and showers are located near the dump station and dumpster. Be on the lookout for the code for the doors during your reservation process. We had missed it and had to ask a neighbor if they knew the codes so we could shower.

    Outdoors Inn Campground

    Great location next to Chippewa

    Recommended!

We had a full hookups with 50 amp service. Our site was next to US-12 and had no noise issues. The Chippewa river flows next to the camp and the adjoining river bank is woodlands. We had no insect issues. There is a super dog park and grocery just east on US-12. Found great coffee and scones in Benson at Go Set Ready Coffee.

Our site had a great camp fire pit made from a half sphere about 40 inches in diameter. Looked like the bottom of a buoy or end of a 250 lbs propane tank. The proprietor is an arborist and sold us a large bundle of hard wood that made great smores.

We picked Benson because of its close location to Glacial Lake state park and the Glacial Ridge Trail. Just take MN-29 north.  The topology change in terrain from the farm lands around Benson to the rolling hills and lakes north on MN-29 is great. Continue on MN-29 to Starbuck for a sizable lake. Take some time and explore the back roads on and around the Glacial Ridge Trail. There are many hills, forests and lakes you can explore east up to New London.

We had an encounter with a pair of swans on the side of the road next to a lake. These are large beautiful birds! We stopped in the car, kept our distance, watched from inside of the car and enjoyed them before the slipped back into the lake.

    Sinclair Lewis City Campground

    Family Camping and more

This is an impeccably maintained city-campground that shows the local are proud of “Our Town” and native son Sinclair Lewis, the hometown American author. Just blocks from the original Main Street, the campground is in the west end of the beautiful lakeside city park. Not only can you camp here in safety and comfort in a family-friendly setting (neighborly camping community, great playgrounds, fishing at your doorstep while but but a close walk to Main Street for unique shops snd cafes) but there are a host of community events that happen in the park, including concerts at a beautiful historic bandstand, art fair and similar events, and an annual 4-day festival in mid-July that celebrates Sauk Centre and all things Sinclair Lewis. Campground rates are extremely reasonable ($15 a night for tent sites, $30 a night for an RV site with full hookups) plus there are weekly, monthly, and seasonal rates. This is a great place for retired local snowbirds to stay in the summer, and a nice regional camping spot for families with kids or folks who would like a home base for day trips in the area including treks on the Lake Woebegone Trail. Check out this local website for activity ideas! http://www.visitsaukcentre.org

Overall, High marks for great maintainence, convenient location, and family oriented setting; however, though the lakeshore is pretty, the lake does have a problem with zebra musells, and many of the RV sites are located pretty close together.

    Birch Lake

Up outdoor close(and where the children are above average)

Birch Lake is Lake Wobegon personified. Fish, swim, canoe, jet ski, you name it. The campsite is located in the Burch State Forest with tons of trees around each site. There’s a fire ring, picnic table and water well located within walking distance. Very friendly and knowledgeable camp host. If you like a more primitive campsite you will like this!

Guide to Willmar

Motorhome and RV accommodations near Willmar, Minnesota typically range from county-operated parks to family-owned resorts. Located in the prairie pothole region of central Minnesota, this area features numerous glacial lakes and rolling terrain with elevation changes of 100-300 feet across campgrounds. Seasonal operations generally run from May through October, with most facilities closing during Minnesota's winter months.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Lake Koronis Regional Park offers multiple fishing options with a diverse aquatic ecosystem. "Canoed all day out on the lake!" shared one visitor who came specifically to enjoy fall colors on the water.

Paddleboarding rentals: Glacial Lakes State Park Campground maintains a crystal-clear lake perfect for water sports. "Our favorite part of this trip was renting stand up paddle boards. The lake water was crystal clear and glass like calm," reported a camper who visited during summer.

Hiking trails: Multiple walking paths connect camping areas to natural features. "There was some lovely views" on the High Peak Trail at Glacial Lakes according to reviewers, while others mention "walking paths right behind our site" that worked well for dog owners at various parks.

Wildlife viewing: The area's mix of prairie and woodland habitats supports diverse wildlife. Visitors to Outdoors Inn Campground reported seeing swans and other birds along nearby lakes, noting "We had an encounter with a pair of swans on the side of the road next to a lake. These are large beautiful birds!"

What campers like

Clean facilities: Campers consistently rate shower buildings and restrooms highly across multiple locations. At Prairie View RV Park & Campground, visitors appreciate the "Very clean and up to date facilities" that complement the concrete pads and full hookups.

Family amenities: Cokato Lake RV Resort provides extensive recreational options. "Inground, heated swimming pool; mini golf; pickleball; tennis; arcade room attached to the office. Ice cream shop has 8 flavors of hand-dipped yum!" reported one enthusiastic visitor.

Proximity to attractions: Many RV sites near Willmar provide convenient access to regional attractions. One camper at Outdoors Inn noted the campground serves as an excellent base for exploring "Glacial Ridge Trail... Continue on MN-29 to Starbuck for a sizable lake. Take some time and explore the back roads."

Winter accessibility: Unlike many seasonal operations, Love's RV Hookup provides year-round electric sites. "Still open in the winter! Convenient location right off I94 and HWY 23," noted a visitor who appreciated the accessibility during colder months.

What you should know

Site orientation challenges: At Lake Koronis Regional Park, site layout issues affect some campers. "Pretty disappointed to arrive and be in a backwards site... the firepit is on the backend of the camper instead of the front," explained one visitor who learned "1/3 of their sites are setup backwards."

Seasonal pricing variations: RV sites during peak summer months command premium rates. Expect rates of $70-80 per night at some locations for non-seasonal campers.

Tent pad terrain: Not all campgrounds provide ideal tent surfaces. At Glacial Lakes State Park, tent campers should prepare for rocky sites as "your tent will be on rocks, not grass."

Water level fluctuations: Lake levels can vary significantly by season and year. "The lake was really high when we visited, which led to a useless campground fishing pier and a boat dock that you had to swim to to use," reported one Glacial Lakes camper.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Westrich RV Park offers multiple recreation options for children. "There is a playground, pool, volleyball area, basketball court, and shower/bath house," noted a visitor who stayed with family.

Insect preparation: Prairie campgrounds require adequate insect protection. "The bugs on the hiking trails were unrelenting even with lots of deet bug spray," warned one Glacial Lakes visitor who cut a planned 5-mile hike short after just 2 miles.

Group accommodations: Several parks accommodate family reunions and large gatherings. Westrich RV Park can host larger family groups, with one visitor noting, "Stayed here with a large group of family and had a site big enough for all of our rigs."

Tick awareness: Grassy prairie sites present tick challenges, particularly in spring and early summer. "Due to the grass, there were many ticks, pets should be treated for ticks ahead of time," advised a Glacial Lakes camper.

Tips from RVers

Overnight convenience: Love's RV Hookup provides basic accommodations for travelers passing through. "I love that Love's has RV spots that are big rig friendly! These are a great option for a stop halfway through a trip," explains one camper who appreciated having "clean bathrooms in Love's, Hardee's for food" right on site.

Electric-only options: While full hookups are common at private RV parks, some county facilities offer electric-only sites. The Glacial Lakes electric sites in the Lower Campground are numbered 14e, 16e, and 18e, with reviewers noting these sites are preferred by many campers.

Firewood quality: Local campground stores vary in firewood quality. At Outdoors Inn, "The proprietor is an arborist and sold us a large bundle of hard wood that made great smores," according to one satisfied customer.
