Hiking trails lead directly from camp to a sandy Lake Michigan beach, and a short walk in the other direction puts you at Grandma's Swedish Bakery in Rowley's Bay. Wagon Trail Campground sits on the quiet, western side of the Door Peninsula near Newport State Park Campground, giving campers a low-key base for fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and stargazing with minimal light pollution. Mosquitoes can be aggressive, especially in summer, so bug spray is worth packing.
The campground runs a wide range of site types: tent-only hideaway sites with long driveways, electric and water hookups, full hookup pads accommodating rigs up to 90 feet, cabins, yurts, and seasonal sites where some residents have built out full decks. Wooded lots make up much of the property, and site separation is more than adequate across most of the loops. The premium sites tend to back up to undeveloped land, giving them the most privacy. One reviewer noted that site 104, a non-hookup spot with an L-shaped driveway, worked fine for a campervan but would not suit a large RV, so it pays to ask about site geometry when booking.
The bathhouses draw consistent attention in reviews. Two facilities serve the campground, each closed for a two-hour deep cleaning window daily. Lee D. called them "possibly the cleanest campground bathrooms I have ever seen," and that sentiment appears across more than half a dozen reviews. The camp store, fish cleaning station, dump station, laundry, dishwashing area, game room with a pool table, and a lounge with a fireplace round out the on-site facilities. Morning yoga has also been offered on-site.
Door County draws crowds in summer, and Wagon Trail reflects that. The campground fills up during peak season, and CAMP Door County, RV Resort & Campground is among the nearby alternatives if this one is booked. The office stays open until 9 pm and is well-staffed at check-in. Reservations are available and strongly recommended for July and August visits. The season runs mid-May through mid-October, with fall arrivals reporting a noticeably quieter atmosphere and good foliage.
Campers who want to range out from camp can reach Washington Island via ferry and spend a day exploring, though renting a vehicle on the island makes the trip significantly more manageable. Camp Door RV and Campground and other campgrounds near Ellison Bay give visitors additional footholds on the peninsula. Wagon Trail rewards those who take time to walk its internal trail network, check the night sky from camp, and work through the bakery menu at least once.
