Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Gillette, WY

struck out on any camping close to devils tower, so we ended up coming here. fun little dirt road coming up the mountain to the sight. really only like 2 spots. lower spot is medium sized and we saw someone else there in a jeep. friends and i took the top spot which was big enough for a truck, a large suv, and sedan.

very quiet secluded area. got cold at night in august, but very beautiful views.

in the dark we kept seeing a tuxedo cat randomly watching us, not sure if it’s a stray or an outside cat from one of the nearby farms, didn’t come over when we enticed it and ran when we shone the light but cute little campsite friend i guess.

If you are on your way up to Devils Tower and are looking for camping this is definitely the spot instead of the KOA camping. Its about an hour away and way less crowded. If you like more of a primitive camping experience go for the homestead camping spots. All dirt (no contrete pads), some shade, a decent amount of space between camp spots and close to water. We only had fly fishing rods but still were able to catch some decent size bass. If you like fishing, and arent a skilled fly fisher, definitely bring a good casting rod- fish are all pretty big and aggressive (walleyes, bass, sunfish etc).

You can swim anywhere in the reservoir except where boats dock. If you have pets though I would be cautious around the water, there are tons of signs up about algea blooms.

Its a 6 hour drive from Denver, but I'll probably head up to Keyhole whenever Colorado has strict fire bans. Pretty neat spot, reservation only at the moment.

What an incredible place! Wyoming is beautiful and you cant beat the area around Devils tower. You can see the tower from all different angles.

This campground does not have electric but has portable water and bathrooms. It is first come first serve and can fit different size rigs. Some people in tents and some in really big RVS.

It is peaceful. Right near Prairie dog land, a stream and there is also a general store a mile away. You just can't beat this view at night!

This campground waited until 2024 to allow reservations for a huge event in Gillette, WY.  When I called them last year, they said that they were planning to wait until the new year before opening reservations because they wanted to be fair.  So last night I set my alarm for 1am to be able to reserve when the spots opened up.  They decided to jack the prices from $58 to $399 for a spot per night.  When I questioned their motives that they waited so that people would be desperate and I didn't see why they couldn't make just a reasonable profit, they hung up on me.  I tried repeatedly to call back to cancel and they would not pick up the phone.  I called 24 times before they were annoyed enough to answer the phone.  I barely got out that I wanted to cancel my reservation before I was hung up on again.  I obviously have not stayed here but I would guess that from their lack of integrity and human kindness that I would not ever want to stay there.  Please beware.

Devil's tower has some of the most unique rock climbing we've ever experienced. And the adorable prairie dogs were an added bonus! Main downside of the campground in the summer is that there isn't much shade. Still five stars, as the facilities are very clean and the short driving distance to the tower is really convenient.

Consists of 2 loops (A&B). Some areas for group sites. $20/night. Bathrooms located in both loops as well as water spigot. Camp hosts present. Beautiful site of Devils Tower. No wildlife during the night present while we were there but the trash is secured. Saw some bison on the road in and lots of prairie dogs close to the entrance. So cute!

We pulled in about 7pm to a rainy campground and grabbed an envelope. At 7pm on a Saturday night it was quiet with only the sound of the rain. Surprisingly, the campground was 70% full when we drove threw and grabbed the first spot we saw. When we woke the next morning it was at least 90% full, still quiet, and the blue sky gave way to the most incredible view of Devil’s Tower!! Everything was clean, safe feeling, and people from all over walking their dogs. This campground is a must!!!

We made the detour out to Devils Tower and were pleasantly surprised. We did not expect to stay here but the beauty of the area and the quaintness of the campground changed our mind. We decided to make a stay out of it and are glad that we did. We enjoyed the Prairie Dogs right off the campground and the trail that leaves the campground up and around the tower is perfect for hiking and running. The river adds some beauty and tranquility to the area. We woke up in the morning to many songbirds and an amazing view of the tower. We will be back here again.

Pros: most of the spots have some shade and an awesome cement picnic table. They’re also spaced far enough apart that each one has privacy. Pat’s point has a nice trail where you can sit and watch the sunset. During the week things are quiet.

Cons: while the showers were nice, 2 of the 4 were locked the entire week. The change machine was consistently out of order. No one kept their dogs on leashes despite the posted signs. Our first night a couple had a loud, drunken argument, ending with the wife telling her child (maybe 7) to F*** off. The camp host didn’t really do anything about noise or when cars were parked blocking the road.

Nice view by a lake but...

Wyoming state parks seem to be hostile to non residents. It"s cheaper to stay at a regular rv park and you have better amenities.

You can only reserve online. Online resevation fee $8. Fee for electric site $18. Electric fee additional $10.
Non resident fee $12. Plus tax. $2.34. Then the only way to pay online was a credit card so there was a $1.26 convenience fee. Nothing about this was convenient.

Been through Wyoming a few times. First time staying at a Wyoming state park. Possibly the last.

Keyhole is a fantastic, quiet little place to get away. Set in the beautiful Black Hills of Wyoming, it is close to many area attractions. Keyhole provides a great place for anyone who enjoys the outdoors and water sports.

Great location if you want to explore Devil's Tower and hike around. A short drive past the entrance of the park is this convenient first come first serve campground. 

The campground has 2 loops with all pull through gravel sites which vary in degree of levelness. 35 foot max RV length. There is no privacy but everyone there was really nice and neighbors chatted with each other. Lots of trees and some sites are shadier than others and some have amazing views of Devil's Tower. There are no hook ups and despite most of the sites being taken by RVs there was very minimal generator noise which is always a welcome surprise.

Each site had a fire pit though no fires allowed at the time we were there and signs posted and pits were taped off reminding you not to start a fire. There was also picnic tables at each site as well. Flush toilets, garbage and recycling as well as drinking water available. You can access hiking to the trails around the tower from this campground. 

Also near the campground is Prairie Dog Town where you can watch these cute critters pop in an out of their holes and run about screaming. Do not try to feed or touch them. They do not want to be in your selfie nor do they want to be your friend. 

You can walk a trail from the campground and a short distance on the road back over the bridge out the entrance gate to the 2 stores just outside the park. One is KOA run and had a cafe as well. Both had some camping supplies and souvenirs as well as beer:).

So far this is our best KOA experience, though I'm taking off 1 star because the mingolf experience, which looks like a great one, was closed for renovation during peak season which seems inexcusable. Great views of the tower, numerous shade options, working hookups. Our power actually had the polarity reversed, but it worked fine. The dump station had a somewhat odd placement requiring me to drive around reverse of the campsite order to get on the right side, but that seems somewhat usual apparently. Also during rain the dump site was flooded, so make sure you have good gloves! It still worked under the flood waters. 

Store was interesting with some great items to pickup, ice cream, and decent food, though during the uptick of delta covid-19 in wyoming nobody was wearing masks or distancing. 

2 great playgrounds for the kids!

Devil's Tower can be one of those parks which quickly can have a line just to get in, especially on busy holiday weekends.    I visited on Labor Day and found that the early bird gets the worm when it comes to entry and camping alike.     While there are other camping facilities just outside of the grounds the ability to simply wake up and hit a trail from your campground is something of unique appeal.    

As you enter the park you will wind around the way with spectacular views of the Devil's tower, pass through prairie dog town and then stumble upon the campground just before ascending to the parking area for the tower's popular trails and small information center.     When crowds are large parking in this area is tight, which is why camping inside the parks bounds has even more of an appeal.    I found that the campground had an access trail which allowed you some of the best views of the tower and also the red beds.    

There are two access points, one to the lower area and one to the higher allowing you to completely bypass the majority of the tourism traffic unless you really want to take the paved ADA trail.

Campsite is spacious and has limited number of sites so registration on a busy weekend is best done online.   On a normal day of the week the campground can fill up by noon so keep that in mind if you are wanting to wing it.

Camp offers all the basics of home without showers.    Flushing toilets and running water are centrally located as is potable water.    This makes even camping in a tent feel luxurious as you are nestled under large shade trees with the Devil's Tower right in your backyard view.     Additionally there is abundant cell signal at all points around the park.    

While there is no firewood or a local store located in the park, less than 50 yards from the entrance gate is a general store and restaurant which has everything you need and despite being so close prices are fairly reasonable.   

I greatly enjoyed the area and also the company of the neighboring campers at this location, everyone was generally very friendly!!  I felt like in comparison to other area campgrounds the price was also just right for what was offered at only $20.     

TIPS:  

• Get the Annual Pass for Parks for only $80 and save big if you are visiting more than one park.   There are several within a stones throw of this area you will want to visit including Wind Cave, Jewel Cave and Rushmore.
• Try the Red Beds trail for a unique vantage point which seems completely disjointed from the look of Devil's Tower.   For more information about this I suggest doing a little research beforehand.

This campground is wonderful. It’s reasonably priced and has a gym, laundry, and showers! We got a tent site. Everyone else staying was very friendly. Bathroom facilities were clean. Laundry was great. Would highly recommend and will definitely be back if I find myself in Gilette again!

Old but clean. We arrived late but the host was flexible and took care of us.

This campground is in town and backs up to a hospital. All the tent sights are about 50' from the parking garage. It was so we'll lit I could have read a book without a flashlight. It was hot but we had to leave our rain fly on just to block the light. When we got up the next morning we realized the ground was covered in ants. LOTS of ants. All over our tent. The pull in sites looked nice, the showers were HOT, clean and free. Check in was easy.

Nestled behind a hospital and just off a main road thru town, I expected more noise--but it was really quiet. There are some bright lights from the hospital parking garage but those didn't bother me in a camper. **NOTE: CASH ONLY. They don't take credit or debit card **

The staff were very friendly and facilities were clean. Stayed in C5 which was mostly level and very shady. Well away from the highway and was a quiet night.
