Set in a blue cove between Bellingham and Blaine, Birch Bay State Park feels private and secluded without being far from urban life.

Stroll along the rocky beach and take in dramatic views of the North Cascades Mountains and Canadian Gulf Islands. Or head up the Terrell Marsh interpretive trail to a rare saltwater and freshwater estuary teeming with birds and wildlife, including great blue herons.

Low tide reveals a wide mudflat with a treasure trove of clams and other shellfish that can be harvested in season. Bring out the pails, shovels, mud boots and licenses, and start digging! If you prefer to swim, Birch Bay is known for its relatively warm water, and if you'd rather be on the water, the park offers excellent crabbing, windsurfing, sailing and paddling.

Staying overnight? Birch bay camping has a basketball court and environmental education programs in summer ensure fun for the whole family. If you're looking for a side trip, the U.S.- Canada border town of Blaine and the fascinating Peace Arch State Park are only 9 miles north, and the lively university city of Bellingham is 20 miles south. You can always spend an evening in town and return to the beachy bliss of Birch Bay.

    Great family atmosphere

This was our first trip in a new trailer, and the park is close to home for us, so perfect for our maiden voyage. Shaded sites, some hookup (water/electric), but most unserviced. Water close by for filling our tank. Short walk to an amazing beach.

    Clean with a Good Rate

Staff was very friendly. We stayed in the overflow site directly next to the office with 20 amp electric only. Campground is well-maintained and very clean. Sites are a little close together, but you do have some green space with a picnic table at each site. Each site is full hook up with water, electric and sewer, and there is not a separate dump station. There are some permanent residents throughout the campground.

Great campground. Love the lake. Easy access for our kayak. Beautiful lake for fishing as well. The cleanest restrooms and showers that I have ever experienced camping. We have been here three times now. No sewer, but the dump area is quiet and efficient. Beautiful woods and hiking available as well. We will be back.

    Amazing views

Beautiful spot, great views of the water and so peaceful. As far as campgrounds go, it wasn’t anything special, except the proximity to the water. Campsites are close together and not much privacy to speak of, and most of the sites are on a slope. We had T-Mobile connection via Canada. Despite any drawbacks of the campground itself, we absolutely fell in love with the island, and will probably be back (we like to explore and don’t often return to places we’ve been).

Get campsite 279 in the Bowman Bay campground, you won't regret it!

My husband and I visited the Bowman Bay campground to celebrate our second wedding anniversary and it was one of the best camping trips we've had! This campground was lovely, a smaller campground right on the beach with great hiking trails to Lottie Point and Lighthouse Point. If you are going to camp at this campground, get campsite 279! It is by far the best one in this campground! It is not RV accessible however.

It's a large site that is a bit more elevated than the rest, with a wall of foliage behind it and no immediate neighbor campsites (the nearest on is on the other side of your parking spot, but your parking spot is beside your campsite and not near it.) It's a really lovely campsite.

    Very Nice Stay

We have stayed here several times and enjoyed it each time. Full 50 amp hookups, gravel pull through spaces. It is quiet here even though the train comes by every evening at idle speed. Our diesel trucks are louder than the train. No showers but there are restrooms to the right as soon as you go in and there is a workout room. You just need a one get a daily pass for the workout room. You can email or call them for a spot and they will email you the spot number and instructions. No need to go in at all, unless you want to go in. I suggest going in and checking out the entire Casino and Lodge. The staff is fantastic and the place is very clean.

Camping and Swimming at Moran State Park's South End: A Two-Night Adventure

Our recent camping trip to Moran State Park's South End campground provided an idyllic escape into nature. We spent two nights of lakeside bliss and refreshing swims in Cascade Lake. The South End campsite, known for its spectacular views and proximity to the water, offered a perfect base for our outdoor retreat.

From the moment we arrived, the South End campsite impressed us with its well-spaced sites and direct access to Cascade Lake. Each site had enough room for our camping gear and offered a personal slice of the park's stunning natural scenery. The lake's close proximity meant that taking a swim was as simple as stepping out of our tent.

Swimming in Cascade Lake was undoubtedly a bonus that enhanced our camping experience. The lake's water was crystal clear, making it inviting at any time of the day. Early mornings were especially magical, as the still water mirrored the beautiful sunrise, creating a perfect setting for a peaceful swim.

The campground boasted clean facilities and accessible amenities, including a nearby restroom with showers maintained impeccably throughout our stay. Evenings were spent around the fire ring, where we cooked meals and shared stories under the starlit sky, the gentle sound of the lake providing a soothing backdrop.

Our two-night stay at the South End of Moran State Park was nothing short of rejuvenating. It combined the rustic charm of camping with the leisure of lakeside relaxation. For anyone looking to unwind and enjoy the beauty of the San Juan Islands, this campground, with its exceptional swimming opportunities, comes highly recommended.

    Thousand Trails La Conner

    Going downhill fast

This is the very first park I took my motorhome to.  After spending a year getting the rig ready, I was finally ready to take it on the road.  I had joined Thousand Trails earlier in the year and set off to see what I knew.  While I had previous RVs before (5th Wheel, Class C's, Travel trailers) this was my trip in a Class A.

My first visit to the Thousand Trails La Conner site was great.  I was able to find a nice full hook up site at the edge of the park very close to the water.

A couple more visits to the park in the following months gave a less than great experience but still good.

Last week turned a corner.  While the staff is still five star level, the park is showing a lot of wear and tear.  I counted more than a dozen closed sites.  Some of these sites had been closed for a long time.  Potholes and ruts in the road made travel unpleasant but the pools of water (and mud) really stood out.

Granted, I was there in February but these issues were not just seasonal.  Some of the same sites had been closed for the past few visits to the park.

I hope they start to pay attention to this park because its location is great.

    Bay View State Park Campground

Nice spot with places nearby to visit

We stayed here in February so the whole park was not open.  As with all state parks, some spots are better than others.  The ranger was very nice, although there for only limited hours.  It was quiet and obviously close to Padilla Bay which was a nice walk.  Also an easy drive to La Conner and Deception Pass.

    Rasar State Park Campground

    Quiet spot to camp!

We stayed here for 3 nights in a travel trailer and really loved it. The water hookups were shut off during the time, but we were able to fill up our water tank near the entrance without any trouble. The tank dump site was free as well for those with a reservation (otherwise it’s $5.00).

There wasn’t much noise from the surrounding roadways, and the bathrooms were very clean. Verizon signal was okay, and there was no TV antennae reception (if that’s something you need). Beautiful hiking trails as well! Would definitely stay here again!

Great campground a short walk from the beach

Deception Pass State Park is huge and beautiful, perfect for families and photographers. The campsites are open and surrounded by forests, with clean facilities, fire pits, and picnic tables. The staff is super friendly, and our son loved sitting in their golf cart. The hike to see Deception Pass Bridge is awesome. We visited in the fall, and the weather was cool but nice. It’s a great place to explore and take pictures. We had a lot of fun and recommend it to everyone!

A little train noise never hurt anyone 🚞

Larrabee State Park is a great spot, surrounded by forests and a beautiful beach. The campsites are really well located with clean restrooms, picnic tables, and fire pits. The hike to the beach is well worth it especially walking under train tracks. The park is easy to explore, and the trains passing by at night are quite a unique experience. This place is perfect for nature lovers and those seeking a bit of adventure. A truly memorable camping experience!

Mountain Lake Campground — Moran State Park

Moron State Park with no host.

Let's face it, the only reason to camp here is because it is the only campground on the island and the hotels are for the rich and famous.

Now that's fine unless you get that one rotten apple that drops into town at midnight and circles the campground 16 times looking for a spot because there aren't any and he has no reservation. So he pulls into a little pullout and slams his car door 30 times in order to throw down a bag.

No Campground Host to be found. No other campers want to mess with the guy and I understand.

    Next night after no sleep.

Same guy . Pulls in at 10 which is ok. Builds a huge smokey fire and finally goes to bed. But at 3 in the morning he starts his loud car to warm up. For 20 minutes!

    4:30 am same thing.

Another sleepless night and I am pissed.

No host to shut him down. Other campers say nothing.

They should call it moron park instead. Never again. Found another fabulous campground and I ain't saying where.

    North Whidbey RV Park

    Clean and tidy

Stayed here a couple nights. Pros: Tidy, clean, well run place. Really convenient access to Deception Pass state park (across the street from its entrance) and to Anacortes and San Juan island ferries. Access to laundry (bring quarters, there’s no change machine, or make change while office is open). There’s a fenced dog play area. We were located on the side farther from Hwy 20, so minimal road noise for us.

Cons: The sites are really close together and most don’t have any privacy. There are plentiful street lamps within the campground that caused me to get up from bed and start hanging towels over windows to block the light.

Didn’t hear the jets during our stay; with no tree cover they’d be louder than they were during our stay actually in the well-forested state park.

    Deception Pass State Park Campground

    Beautiful, fairly private sites

Beautiful park, we stayed on Forest Loop area of campsites and the sites there had lots of big trees and shrubbery that helped privatize them. Wonderfully varied terrain between the beaches with beautiful island views (saw an otter on the beach once), Hoypus Point hiking trails through traditional northwest forest/swordfern landscape, and Cranberry Lake with its roped-off swimming area. There were planes from the Air Force base that circled overhead practicing, so not the quietest park, but surprisingly they didn’t bother us - in an rv - though normally I’m noise sensitive. If you plan to visit other WA parks, just get the yearly Discovery Pass state park pass as all the WA parks seem to require it or a $10 parking/entry fee.

    Bay View State Park Campground

    Good campground

Clean bathrooms, enough space between vehicles (we had a fairly private spot), easy to access with large car. We saw a deer in the morning in the campground. Walk down to the beach in the morning to see the tide
