Moran State Park encompasses four distinct campgrounds on Orcas Island, with Northend Campground positioned closest to the main entrance and day-use facilities. Managed by Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission, this hillside campground accommodates RVs up to 45 feet and offers both drive-in and walk-in sites, though pets are not permitted.
The campground's sloped terrain creates reasonably spaced sites with limited privacy between them. Don notes the bathrooms "have showers, and have always been kept clean," though several campers mention the hilly layout makes it less suitable for children riding bikes. Sites closer to the road experience more traffic noise, while those on the upper loops provide better separation from the main thoroughfare.
Cascade Lake sits directly across from the campground, offering a sandy swimming area, boat rentals, and a snack bar during operating season. The gradual depth change and warmer water make it particularly appealing to families with children. Firewood is available on an honor system, and the camp store provides basic supplies including ice.
The campground serves as a trailhead for hiking around Cascade Lake and connecting to other park destinations. Campers can explore nearby Midway Campground — Moran State Park or Southend Campground — Moran State Park for different lake access points. Cell service is generally unavailable, helping visitors disconnect from daily routines.
