RV parks near Mascot, Virginia provide various full-hookup accommodations for motorhomes and travel trailers. American Heritage RV Park features 138 sites including 80 pull-through spaces with 30/50-amp service on concrete pads. The Colonies RV and Travel Park offers 22 sites with one pull-through and 13 full hookup options on concrete pads. "Our site was very nice site#10, a leveled concrete site with room to park our towed vehicle while still attached to our Motor Home," notes one visitor to American Heritage. Thousand Trails Williamsburg maintains year-round RV sites with water and electric hookups, though reviews indicate the campground has "more trailer park feel" with sites that are "close, many are not level, not very big rig friendly."

Navigating into some RV parks requires careful planning due to narrow access roads. According to feedback on The Dyrt, American Heritage RV Park is "just minutes off the highway I-64" making it easily accessible for larger rigs, though "the actual road INTO the campground is pretty narrow." Most parks in the region provide dump stations, with sanitary dump services available at Thousand Trails parks, Military Park Cheatham Annex, and Americamps RV Resort. Cell service varies significantly—Newport News Park reports "AT&T had 2 bars and 6 MB/s w/o a booster, 3 bars and 8 MB/s with it," while Belle Isle State Park has "almost no cell service to speak of." Many parks accommodate pets with designated dog areas, and several offer cable TV and WiFi connections at RV sites.

      Machicomoco State Park Campground

      Beautifully Quiet

Note to Self: No Primitive Site reservations...EVER. I love this park. It's situated far enough from the busy traffic noise...beautiful Virginia city of Hayes. When I arrived, it was such a scorching day and there wasn't nearly enough tree cover to shield my tent from the "son of Hades". Suffered heat exhaustion almost to the point of death...Literally. Night was my only respite. If it hadn't been for the wonderful camp attendants who came to my rescue, it would've been an utterly failed experience. Bless their hearts. Other than that, this was a great training experience for an old Novice camper. Now that I'm a bit more practiced, I'm going back 😁, armed with knowledge and more confidence.

      Machicomoco State Park Campground

      Nice Campground

The good: super clean and new restrooms / showers. The entire parking immaculate. Stayed at site 12. Offers water views and shade. Site 13 is similar and is probably the most ideal site.

Cons: zero privacy. The sites are basically scattered around an open grassy area and fairly close together.

Be aware: sites are not vehicle accessible. Need to carry your kit 50-75 yards.

      Newport News Park

      Beautiful scenery

Our stay is going to be the 21 days that are allowed. In that time, I have been on many nature walks with my dog. Very enjoyable, very well maintained. The only thing I did not like is the bathrooms. I have seen a cleaning lady come through, but I think it is primarily for the sinks and toilets. The shower curtains are moldy, lots of spiders. The shower pressure and temp are great. All in all, it is affordable and very peaceful.

      American Heritage RV Park

      Friendly, Convenient to Colonial Sites

We enjoyed our stay at American Heritage. We were offered a change of our assigned site if we would prefer to be closer to the bath house. We preferred staying where we were until we discovered that the electric hook-up was far enough away on the grass that we couldn't reach. (We have a little Scamp 13 and the plug was just a little too short.) We had a pull-through site(every other row was pull-through).

It had a full hook-up. The cover on the electric post was missing rivets, so we had to put it back in place ourselves, but there was no problem with the electric. We used 30 Amp for the RV and plugged in our backup battery to the 15 amp plug. The water pressure was good and consistent. We've had problems at other RV sites. We used the sewer connection with no problem at the end.

We did not have an umbrella at the picnic table and seriously considered buying a screen tent because we stayed for 4 days and it was HOT. Some sites had more shade. In fact, that's one thing we'd change next time. The pool was wonderful, the showers were clean and we used the laundry with no problems--they take quarters and washing and drying one load cost $5.00.

The staff was very friendly and responsive. Overall, we had a great stay and would stay again.

      Thousand Trails Williamsburg

      Near interessant points of interest

Friendly staff. Good location. Lots of noice near the big road. Laundry room could use a clearing. Bathrooms en toilets are very clean. Not much room between the spots with lots of tall weeds.

      Sun Outdoors Cape Charles

Lots of rules, none actually enforced.

Beautiful resort. Used to come here as a kid 30 years ago. Was privately owned back then and was a little more peaceful back then.

List of rules broken since I’ve been here:

      1. Underage golf cart drivers.
      2. People walking through others sites. (All day long)
      3. Drones
      4. E-bike and scooters everywhere.
      5. Loud music 24 hours a day.
      6. 2-3 extra vehicles in sites.
      7. Personnel fireworks
      8. People walking around with alcohol.
      9. Bikes after dark.
      10. Golf carts and vehicles speeding around everywhere.

Plus the bathrooms are dirty, the pools are unsupervised and people claim chairs all day and leave stuff on them. This place was by far the best campground before it was corporatized. It’s a shame because I absolutely love this place. I want to make it a yearly tradition for my family but it’s hard seeing what the place is knowing what it once was.

    Guide to Mascot

Camping options around Mascot, Virginia provide varied experiences for RVers and tent campers alike. The coastal plain elevation of the Tidewater region ranges from sea level to about 250 feet, creating gentle terrain for camping with mild winters and warm, humid summers. Water access is a defining feature with the Chesapeake Bay, York River, and Rappahannock River offering numerous fishing and boating opportunities at campgrounds throughout the region.

    What to do

Crabbing excursions: The pier at Thousand Trails Chesapeake Bay provides dedicated crabbing opportunities. "We had never been crabbing and this beautiful rv park has its own crabbing pier. There is boating, hiking, watching wild life and so many pretty birds," notes camper Mike T.

Historical exploration: The area's rich colonial history creates unique educational opportunities. "Location was great and we loved going into Colonial Williamsburg from here," shares a visitor to American Heritage RV Park. For military history enthusiasts, The Colonies RV and Travel Park sits on historic grounds, where "While there you must check out the Fort Monroe Casement Museum."

Water recreation: Multiple campgrounds feature water activities beyond swimming pools. At Bethpage Camp-Resort, "We enjoyed the site Mulberry 2A that was a full hookup and a patio...backed to the lake," according to Robert P. The resort also offers "kayaking available" and "small beach" access for varied water activities.

    What campers like

Spacious sites: Many RV parks feature comfortable spacing between sites. Bethpage Camp-Resort offers "spacious lots" that are "very secluded" according to reviews. At Grey's Point Camp, "The sites are spacious and always clean when we arrive," reports Cathy F.

Kid-friendly amenities: Families appreciate designated areas for children. Bethpage Camp-Resort is "kid friendly which is something we're always looking for," says Wendy D., who adds, "We had so much fun and there is quite a bit to do." The resort includes "splash pad-fun for small children" and "multiple kids playgrounds."

Seasonal activities: Many campgrounds organize special events throughout camping seasons. "Casino night was a blast!" notes Michael B. about Bethpage Camp-Resort. At Grey's Point, they maintain activities even during challenging times: "They did a great job social distancing the management, while maintaining CDC guidelines even for activities...We attended the movie night drive in."

    What you should know

Varied site conditions: Site quality can differ significantly even within a single campground. At Rockahock Campgrounds, "Our site had a nice brick pad, which was convenient and a good bit of space behind the trailer," though other areas may have challenges as "the water faucets leaked and the ground was soaked."

Service limitations: Cell reception and internet access vary greatly. At Thousand Trails Chesapeake Bay, "Wi-Fi is spotty at best," while at Fort AP Hill's military campground, one visitor notes there's "limited cell service (StarLink or similar is your best option)."

Access restrictions: Some camping areas have specific entry requirements. Military Park Fort AP Hill requires appropriate credentials as "must have proper government ID to access post," and occasionally "you hear military field training going on (live ranges, helicopters, and ospreys - but I don't mind)."

    Tips for camping with families

Resort-style options: For comprehensive family experiences, consider campgrounds with multiple amenities. Bethpage Camp-Resort features "Golf carts, mini golf, ice cream shop, friendly staff, restaurant, water park- amazing," according to one reviewer who calls it "Our favorite camp-resort yet!"

Entertainment for different ages: Look for campgrounds with varied activities for children of different age groups. Thousand Trails Williamsburg offers "great amenities. Indoor and outdoor pools. Decent spacing between sites," and provides "many activities scheduled on the weekends. Lots of families camping."

Budget considerations: Some family-friendly amenities may require additional fees. At Bethpage Camp-Resort, "Golf carts were difficult to reserve" and "were only available for pickup at 1/2pm the day of your rental(Kind of a waste)," according to a visitor who still gave it 5 stars.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection strategies: Some RV parks offer premium sites worth the upgrade. At American Heritage RV Park, one visitor recommends "premium site[s]. The site was perfectly level, clean and well maintained." Another visitor to Thousand Trails Harbor View advises checking site conditions, as "Gravel site pad could definitely use some maintenance and fresh material added. Had to put down boards to park our travel trailer because about a third of the pad had just turned into mud."

Seasonal timing: Consider visiting during shoulder seasons for better experiences. For Thousand Trails Harbor View, one camper advises, "If you have allergies, avoid spring. EVERYTHING outside was covered in a light haze of pollen." Weather conditions at The Colonies RV and Travel Park can affect enjoyment as "The weather was nice. You are surrounded by water."

Leveling requirements: Many RV parks in the region require leveling equipment. While American Heritage RV Park offers "concrete pad sites with full hookup and shaded by tall pine trees," other parks may have challenges. At Thousand Trails Williamsburg, sites are "close, many are not level, not very big rig friendly."
