    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

The Newport News area features several RV parks with varied amenities for motorhome travelers. American Heritage RV Park in Williamsburg offers 160 full hookup sites with 30/50 amp service on level concrete pads, operating year-round with big rig access. The Colonies RV and Travel Park at Fort Monroe provides 22 sites including 13 full hookups with 30/50 amp service on concrete pads near water views. Newport News Park itself contains 188 RV sites with electric and water hookups, though no sewer connections are available at individual sites. Military Park Cheatham Annex near Yorktown offers 69 RV sites with full hookups and 30/50 amp service on concrete pads, accessible to military personnel and retirees. "Sites are a bit close together but I have seen worse," noted one traveler about American Heritage RV Park, highlighting the typical spacing found at many parks in the region.

Cell service varies throughout the area, with most parks reporting 1-3 bars on major carriers. Dump stations are available at all parks, though Newport News Park lacks individual site sewer connections. Most RV parks in the region remain open year-round, with peak season running April through November. Reservations are strongly recommended, particularly for weekend stays when parks fill quickly. Pet-friendly policies are standard across all parks, though leash requirements apply universally. For RVers seeking easy access to historical attractions, American Heritage RV Park sits just 4 miles from York River State Park and offers convenient access to I-64. The Colonies RV Park provides unique waterfront camping with no gate access required, making it particularly accessible for larger rigs. Propane is available on-site at several parks, and most feature paved interior roads with occasional speed bumps to control traffic flow.

      Belle Isle State Park Campground

      BELLE ISLE STATE PARK

First time staying in a travel trailer at a state park. We booked the day of, because we were being indecisive, and there were a few spots available.

We came in after hours, and the guide at the entrance told us where to get our packet (from the kiosk in front of the camp store).

It’s very easy to find everything here, and the camp ground had both pull-throughs and back in spots. Plenty of separation between you and your neighbor for some privacy. No issues with the water/electric/dump station. Almost no cell service to speak of, but that’s the beauty of going to a place like this. Very kid and pet friendly. The community showers and bathrooms are very clean.

Lots of bugs and mosquitos. Plan accordingly.

Both the visitor center and camp store have plenty of souvenirs, but not much besides that. Just know, if you don’t plan well enough to bring something, you’ll be traveling 20-30 min out of your way to reach anything besides a gas station (nearest grocery store/Walmart is 25 min away).

Overall, it was a great first experience in our RV at this state park!

      American Heritage RV Park

Cannot Recommend for Big Rigs or Groups

We recently brought a group of ten campers to American Heritage RV Park because several of us had stayed there before and remembered it as a clean, well-kept park. Based on those positive experiences, we recommended it to our group and looked forward to sharing the campground with them. Unfortunately, this stay did not meet our expectations. Because sites are not assigned in advance, we could not choose sites that worked well for our group. Our 42-foot fifth wheel was placed in back-in site#136, which— like the other back-in sites— has a tree planted at the rear that prevents fully backing in. This left us very close to the road, with no way to park in front and no room to park alongside without blocking our steps. We first parked across the road in a grassy area but were told to move. When we parked in another group member’s pull-through site, we received a call saying two vehicles were not allowed— even though we observed several sites with two vehicles. The office directed us to the overflow lot near the front of the park, the farthest point from our site on the back row. When we asked to speak to the manager, we were told she works off-site. I emailed her asking her to visit our site, but she never responded. We were also told we could not put up a dog fence that extended onto the grass, though this rule was not posted anywhere. When booking months in advance, we requested that our sites be grouped near a cabin for one of our members— an 86-year-old woman in a wheelchair who requires oxygen. She was placed first in Cabin 5, then moved to Cabin 8 after a request for a larger and closer cabin. The second cabin was still far from our sites, down a hill and facing the woods in an unlit area, making it hazardous to reach at night, expecially for her. We also saw another camper with a rig identical to ours struggle to get into a back-in site, ultimately hitting a water faucet across the road, leaving the park without water for over two hours. These sites are simply not suitable for big rigs. While the park is clean, our overall experience was frustrating. Guests who book early, provide rig sizes, and pay for extended stays should reasonably expect sites that accommodate their camper and tow vehicle, and that group requests would be honored when possible. Large rigs should be cautious— the back-in sites are tight and maneuvering is difficult. Unfortunately, based on this visit, I cannot recommend American Heritage RV Park.

      Fort Eustis Recreation Area

      Excellent Bargain

      Season: year round

      Reservations: 757-878-2610 or 2565

      Pets: Leashed

      Sites: 9 $20.00 with w/e/s

      Cabins: 5 $75.00 daily

Picnic table, grill, playground, bowling, paintball, tennis, propane, water, electric, trash, laundry, showers, fishing

It was as if they have two sections in the campground. One section seems to have long term and then the section where the 9 sites are is nice and open with many mature trees. There is nice separation between sites. I loved the area but I am a country girl at heart. Nice to be in the heart of the military. BTW"GREAT" Military Transportation Museum. The commissary is fantastic, didn't go to the PX.

      Historic

      Electric: 30-50 amp

This is a private campground and you do not have to be military to stay. It really is in a great location.

Beach, dump, firewood, showers, fire pit, store, ice picnic table, playground, toilets, concrete pads, horseshoes, trash. A wonderful spot for a campground on the Historic Fort Monroe. There is no gate to have to pass through to reach the campground. It is located on the far end and on a beautiful flat grassy area with beautiful mature trees. Well maintained and very quiet. While there you must check out the Fort Monroe Casement Museum. You have water on two sides with excellent walking area.

      American Heritage RV Park

Good location with lots to do within an hour's drive

Usually when we go out with our trailer, the campground is basically the "destination." In this case, the campground was a place to park our "mobile motel room" so we could explore the area and do a day trip to the beach.

This was our first time staying where full hookups were standard, and we had a pull-through site on a level concrete pad. A picnic table was provided, and a metal "fire pit" will be delivered to your site if requested.

There was decent space between the sites, though of course not like what you find at a state park! But speaking of which, American Heritage RV Park is just 4 miles from York River State Park. After getting set up, we went there and we highly recommend it for nature lovers.

The campground is also close to Colonial Williamsburg, and a little over an hour away (depending on traffic) from Virginia Beach and First Landing State Park.

The bathrooms were clean, showers had hot water, and the campground was very quiet. A train comes through the area a couple of times a day (and night), but we didn't find that to be a problem.

It's close to I-64 (easy on/off) and easy to find, though the actual road INTO the campground is pretty narrow.

We chose to stay here instead of one of the campgrounds in VA Beach just because traffic in and around VA Beach is crazy. Seriously. I felt much better about just driving there with my car instead of towing the trailer through that mess.

We didn't check out the pool, but it seemed nice and we saw people swimming. Some folks we met said they'd been at the campground a week.

Be sure to ask about AARP, Good Sam, AAA, or other memberships you have because they'll give a 10% discount when you check in. We had good cell service on AT&T and Sprint networks.

While it was the most expensive place we've stayed so far, compared to an oceanfront motel room at VA Beach during peak season, it was a very good deal. We'll probably stay here again in the future.

More about this trip (and all we did in 2 days!!) is on my blog:

    Guide to Newport News

The Newport News area offers RV and tent camping options within easy reach of both coastal attractions and historical sites. Located at the meeting point of the Chesapeake Bay and James River, this region provides mild year-round camping conditions with a humid subtropical climate and relatively flat, wooded terrain. Campgrounds throughout the area range from military bases to privately-owned resorts, with varying levels of waterfront access.

    What to do

Beach access: 5-minute walk at The Colonies RV and Travel Park provides shoreline activities without leaving the campground. "Beach access, country store, water on 2 sides. Located on historic Fort Monroe, VA the fort has a lot to offer. No reason to leave but if you do there's plenty in surrounding areas," explains Becky W.

Crabbing excursions: Set up on dedicated piers at Thousand Trails Chesapeake Bay where facilities cater to this popular regional activity. "We had never been crabbing and this beautiful rv park has its own crabbing pier. There is boating, hiking, watching wild life and so many pretty birds," reports Mike T.

Historical exploration: Fort Monroe's historical significance complements visits to the wider Colonial Triangle. "Located on the Historic Fort Monroe, you have water on two sides with excellent walking area. While there you must check out the Fort Monroe Casement Museum," advises reviewer N.I.

Hiking options: Many campgrounds feature nature trails that don't require leaving the property. "There are more than 10 miles of hiking and biking trails, fishing on two lakes and the York River along with an 18 hole golf course," notes a visitor to Military Park Cheatham Annex.

    What campers like

Waterfront settings: Multiple campers praise the unique coastal experience of Military Park Fort Story Cape Henry RV Park, which sits near the Chesapeake Bay meeting the Atlantic. "This campground is located at the Fort Story Navy Base, set in a wooded area not far from a nice beach right at the corner of where the Chesapeake Bay meets the Atlantic. Two historic lighthouse mark the spot!" shares Janet R.

Affordable military options: Service members appreciate cost-effective camping near attractions. "Large sites, shaded, and semi private (some trees between sites and sites not right on top of each other). Close to beach (dog friendly beach!) and lots of sightseeing and restaurants nearby," notes Steve V. about Fort Story.

Family-friendly water amenities: Water features rank highly among camper priorities. "The lake and pools are fantastic. We love having both options for spending some time in the water. The playgrounds are large and fun for the younger kids," explains Christen C. about Bethpage Camp-Resort.

Concrete pads: Many RVers specifically mention level, concrete parking pads as a standout feature. "Our site was very nice site#10, a leveled concrete site with room to park our towed vehicle while still attached to our Motor Home. We also had a level concrete patio with a picnic table," reports Mary H.

    What you should know

Military ID requirements: Several campgrounds require proper identification for entry. "This is an amazing recreational campground for military families and retirees that is located right on the York River between Williamsburg and Yorktown," explains Janet R. about Military Park Cheatham Annex.

Seasonal operating schedules: Most rv campgrounds near Newport News operate from April through November, with limited winter availability. For example, Grey's Point Camp and Bethpage Camp-Resort both operate April 1 to November 15.

Noise considerations: Be prepared for occasional noise at some locations. "The campground is awesome. Beach is a short walk, but what they don't tell you is that there's a club on the beach. So be warned- it's a bit noisy," James A. advises about The Colonies RV Park.

Reservation timing: During peak season, advance planning is essential. "We stayed as thousand trails. We were on a huge site; other sites are average for rv park. Great pools and splash pad. Beach. Boating," shares Tim S. about Grey's Point Camp.

    Tips for camping with families

Water park access: Bethpage Camp-Resort offers extensive water recreation options for children. "We love this place! I has everything you need and more!! Pros- Golf carts, mini golf, ice cream shop, friendly staff, restaurant, water park- amazing, splash pad-fun for small children," recommends Our Greight Escape.

Tent site selection: For families seeking more privacy in tent camping areas, strategic site selection helps. "Hint: for more privacy (tent campers) ask for site 6 or 7," suggests James A. about The Colonies RV Park.

Activities for multiple age groups: Look for campgrounds with diverse recreation options. "The campground is multi-faceted. There is everything for everyone—camper cabins as well as an RV park with hookups as needed, and also standard tent sites as well as primitive tent cents," notes Janet R.

Playground options: Several campgrounds feature playground equipment appropriate for different age ranges. "There are several small hiking trails nearby on base that were good for walking the dog," notes Eleanor at Little Creek MWR RV Park.

    Tips from RVers

Hookup positioning: At American Heritage RV Park, connection points may require planning. "The connection boxes are set back pretty far on the sites, so you need longer hoses/cords. We had a long electric cord that reached and had to add a second water hose and second section of sewer hose to connect," advises Eleanor about a similar military campground.

Traffic considerations: Base your departure timing on local traffic patterns. "Traffic getting off base starting around 1500-1600 is bad, so plan accordingly," warns Eleanor at Little Creek MWR RV Park.

Internet connectivity: Service varies widely between campgrounds. "T-mobile gateway internet sucks here, but Starlink works well from the site we are in," reports Nick E. about Thousand Trails Chesapeake Bay.

Extended stay options: Some rv campgrounds near Newport News offer affordable monthly rates. "Pricey in the summer time, but they have a monthly winter rate $756 (not proratable) from October 1 thru April 30," notes Maria K. about The Colonies RV Park.
