    Lake Tawakoni State Park Campground

    Nice state park

We don't stay at too many TX State Parks because of the added day use fee. We decided on this park due to its proximity to family in this area. The site was level and on a concrete pad with a parking spot right next to it. We did have a neighbor, so the space between us was fair. Our cell signal with Verizon was poor, so it made work difficult. Our site had W/E and there is a dump station. We did have a picnic table and fire ring. There are some sites that back up to a part of the lake. Noise level was pretty low. Unfortunately, we only spent 1 full day here, so we didn't really get to enjoy any of the hiking trails or do any fishing. We will definitely have to stay again in the future.

    Governor Jim Hogg RV Park

    RV camping

The camping area is mostly occupied by long term RV campers. Many of the campers are employed in the nearby areas. Grounds offer water/electric/sewer hookups, there are also toilets available but no showers. The RV grounds are part of the city park which offers a splash pad (seasonal), large playground, pavilion, picnic areas, arboretum, and a short hiking trail (approximately one third of a mile). The RV sites are backed up by the sheriff's office/county jail the courthouse is down the road, and there is a police department across the street. This isn't to suggest that the area is dangerous, its a small town and everything is pretty much right there. Shopping and restaurants are within walking distance.

Lake Fork, a popular fishing lake is within a ten minute drive. Lake Quitman is less than ten minutes, generally this is where water sport activities occur. Pets are welcome.

Mineola Civic Center and RV Park

    Excellent

Over 150 concrete sites all level from what I could see. Well set up for Class A Motorhome sewer, water and 50 and 30 amp connections. Walking distance of big grocery store. 15 miles from Lake Fork. They even bring you a 55 gallon garbage container.

    We RV Champions

    Cool name, cool stay!

The name drew us in, the convenience, friendly staff, large spaces and the usual amenities will bring us back.

A very convenient location for a base if you are looking to go to Canton Trade Days, Edom's many art festivals, Moore's Store in Ben Wheeler to see a show, shopping in Tyler or any of your East Texas adventures.

Although near the highway and the Tyler Pounds Field Regional Airport, this rv park is surprisingly quiet and peaceful. An older park, well maintained with mature trees lining the property. A good portion of long term stay residents with smiles and waves and neat spaces.

Lake Athens Marina and RV Park

    Wonderful place

We spent a month here. We came in to attend the NRVTA and were bummed when the adjoining park was booked. So we chose Lake Athens, and what a treat! Location is wonderful. Right on a huge, nice lake. Very safe. Large field where we let our dogs off leash. Walking distance to the fishery. There is a restaurant on site with FABULOUS food. People are relaxed... not rude, or loud, don't complain about friendly dogs off leash etc. Sites are gravel but level. We have a 44ft triple axl fifth wheel, had plenty of room (we had an end site but the middle row Sites do appear tight). The permanent residents here are nice. Clean laundry facilities, allowed all our packages/Mail. There is a community fire pit near the play ground. Small area in the back with walking trails. Can't wait to return honestly. Didnt use their wifi as we have our own. We switch from Verizon to ATT, and at times signals were weak. Other times just fine. Hit or miss depending on utilization I suppose.

    Big Tex Campgrounds

    Four Stars For Now

This is a new campground that is just getting up and running. The sites are all large and shaded with a picnic table and a fire pit. Our site was also a full hookup site as was the site of our friends that also came with us. They have a camp store and a laundry mat and a couple of small hiking trails. There are several other amenities coming. The only con is they will move you. I don’t care if you picked that spot out for a specific reason (as I did) when booking, it likely won’t be your spot when you check in. I find that annoying, but that’s literally the only con. The staff was nice, park clean, and shaded sites. I did not go to the restrooms (if they even have any) to tell you how those are.

    Bluebonnet Ridge RV Park

    Nice for a stopover

We spent one night at Bluebonnet Ridge last fall on a trip to Phoenix. It appears to be more for long term RVers, but it was convenient to the interstate and a good place to stop before hitting Dallas. The site was level, but muddy, and they were very close together. Water and electric and sewer at all sites. There is a nice store and a pool which was not open when we were there.

Guide to Athens

Athens, Texas camping options extend beyond the larger commercial parks with several family-oriented alternatives available within 30 miles of town. The area experiences hot summers with temperatures often exceeding 95°F, while winter lows rarely drop below freezing. Seasonal campers should note that summer humidity can make tent camping challenging without proper ventilation, though RV sites near Athens, Texas remain comfortable year-round with hookups.

What to do

Petting zoo activities: The Fabulous Bok Vegas Texas offers an interactive petting zoo alongside their camping facilities, making it ideal for families wanting animal encounters during their stay. The campground features 66 sites with options for tent, RV, cabin, and glamping accommodations.

Water recreation: Coal Mine Ranch RV Park maintains a small water park that keeps younger campers entertained. "My kids are already asking when we are coming back. The water park kept my kids happy the entire weekend," writes Kayla L., though she notes it closes at 5 pm for private events. The park also organizes evening activities: "They set up a movie night on the projector."

Fishing opportunities: Many camping areas near Athens provide access to fishing. Texas Log Cabin RV Park offers a more rustic experience near fishing spots. One visitor notes, "It's like ol school its just simple no concrete, have common fire pit areas and they even give you the word to burn at the common area."

What campers like

Educational opportunities: Texan RV Park & Campus stands out for its connection to the National RV Training Academy. Donald B. reports, "If you're full timing, like me, you should, at a minimum take the NRVTAs basic class. I have taken all of their technical classes," listing specific courses including AC, refrigeration systems, water heaters, furnaces, slides, levelers, solar systems, and generator maintenance.

Community atmosphere: Many smaller RV parks foster a sense of community. Canton I-20 RV Park gets praise for its practical amenities: "They've got a pool, showers, and restrooms that are clean and maintained, plus free laundry, which is a big bonus if you're staying long term," according to one camper.

Lakefront locations: Several camping options provide direct lake access. One reviewer appreciates the outdoor space at Lake Athens Marina and RV Park: "Large field where we let our dogs off leash. Walking distance to the fishery. There is a restaurant on site with FABULOUS food. People are relaxed... not rude, or loud, don't complain about friendly dogs off leash."

What you should know

Site spacing varies significantly: End sites typically offer more space for larger rigs at most campgrounds in the area. At Chuck's RV Resort, a newer facility with 157 sites, campers appreciate the concrete pads and organized layout. Angela R. notes, "The roads and pads are all concrete with full hookups. The park is well maintained, aesthetically pleasing, and everyone is very nice."

Management presence differs: Some parks have limited staff availability. One camper at Coal Mine Ranch RV Park observed, "No management on site, even during posted office hours. Small dumpster is always full or overflowing. Seems like no one enforces the rules so dogs and unsupervised kids running amuck."

Seasonal considerations: Summer camping requires preparation for heat. Texas Log Cabin RV Park provides common fire pit areas rather than individual fire rings, which some campers prefer during cooler months. Year-round camping is available at most facilities, though amenities like pools typically operate seasonally.

Tips for camping with families

Water play options: Coal Mine Ranch provides a water recreation area specifically designed for children. As Carrie I. mentions, "There were some drawbacks to the sites, but the water area made it all worth it for us and our toddler! He had a BLAST." The park maintains affordable food options at the water area.

Educational activities: Consider visiting the Texas Freshwater Fishery adjacent to some camping areas. As one Lake Athens visitor noted, it's a "cool place to take the young children!" The educational facility offers hands-on learning about local aquatic ecosystems.

Evening entertainment: Several campgrounds organize movie nights and group activities. At Texas Log Cabin RV Park, Billy N. appreciated the personalized service: "This was our first stop with our new travel trailer. We arrived after dark and the owner Barb waited for us and showed us to our camp site. She even helped us back in and made sure we were good for the night."

Tips from RVers

Training resources: RVers staying long-term can take advantage of the National RV Training Academy near Athens. Cindy S. writes about staying at Texan RV Park: "I was able to work on my rig here and have assistance from other students and teachers as well as mobile techs working in the field."

Site selection advice: End sites generally provide more space for larger rigs. At Lake Athens Marina, one camper with a 44-foot fifth wheel noted they "had plenty of room" with their end site but observed "the middle row Sites do appear tight."

Connectivity challenges: Cell service varies significantly by location and provider. One Lake Athens visitor reported: "We switch from Verizon to ATT, and at times signals were weak. Other times just fine. Hit or miss depending on utilization I suppose."
