Clean Park and nice shaded sites

This is our second time staying here - once in Electric site on Lakeside and this time non electric site on Hillside. Love this side of Hillside - quiet and shaded. Very clean park and shower house does not have the timed showers of Lakeside. Both times very much appreciated the presense of DCNR - on foot this time. Very nice park to hike, swim, walk, bike, and kayak. The little store has drinks and snacks. Because the beach was closed we had considered going to Deery Community Pool 7 miles away - another option in the area.

    Maybe my favorite campground

This is the one campground that my wife and I make it to every year. There's truly nothing special about it, except that is a very friendly, and laid back place to camp. It sits on top of a mountain well away from the rest of the park with two main roads going either direction from the camp office and store. Most of the camp sites have electricity, but most aren't level. It's the kind of place that has some really great sits and some not so great. But we personally always love making a trip here.

Well kept park with good spot spacing

Stayed here the first weekend of October.  Nice spots and many have good spacing from your neighbors.  Pets are welcome.  Facilities are older but well kept.  Bathhouse is heated with showers that have a fiberglass tub surround, not concrete.  Nice hiking trails that connect through the campground.  Hiking trail maps are not great but the trails are marked well. The Lake is a good walk and looks good for kayaking and fishing.  Brought our kayaks but it was a bit too cold.  Big wide spots are 11 and 16.  Nice hammock hangers on the non-electric spots.

    Comfy, Clean, and Friendly Place

I liked this place.  I stayed here in my RV twice early this summer, going and coming from my Grandson's graduation party in Illinois.  The sites in the lower field, where I was, were roomy and level and all pull-throughs.

However, the rate is NOT $25/night.  Check their website for the correct charge.

No advance payment was required.  You pay when you stay.  I appreciate that in these times when other campgrounds require full payment in advance and don't give refunds.  A little trust and hospitality goes a long way.

Even though I stayed the day after the Memorial Day weekend, the place was very clean and orderly in spite of bulging trash bins.  Kudos to the staff.

Since I travel this route frequently to visit my daughter & family, I will definitely stay again.

Always a good place for a weekend getaway!

Sites are super big and is a great family owned campground! Super close to a local ice cream shop and has a great dog park and is fully paved. Large fishing area and Camp store! I love that you can use Campers App at this campground and I love getting the Notifications when I camping there!

    Tomlinson Run State Park Campground

    Very wooded campground

General: 50-site (all but six with electric hookups) campground plus two yurts and three cabins. Two sites are handicap accessible.

Site Quality: The sites have gravel pads (except the handicap-accessible ones which were paved). The sites were completely covered with leaves when we were there which made it challenging to determine where the actual (narrow) pad was. Sites appeared to be level. A fire ring and wooden picnic table complete the site.

Bathhouse: A little dated but clean. Two of the stall doors did not latch properly. Didn't use the shower so cannot comment but there was a sign indicating it took a while for the water to warm up.

Activities/Amenities: There is a small camper store, laundry, and a playground. In season, there is lake swimming and a boat dock. There is a fishing area, mini-golf and disc golf, and several short hiking trails. Unfortunately, since we arrived late afternoon and had to depart early the following day (and were camping off-season), we could not take advantage of any of these things. What we lose in activities, we gain in a quieter camping experience with fewer crowds, which is generally preferable for us!

    Quiet and cozy

We're staying in the winter for a few nights to visit friends who live outside Pittsburgh. Friendly and cozy spot. They've done a great job in the winter despite the frigid weather by using heat tape on the spigots and leaving lots of information at the office.

    Camping in the trees

Electric Site 37 - pad is pretty level, plenty for our small camper and truck, on a slight hill to get to fire ring but lots of space to spread out. You could tent but not really a flat spot. We were near the non-electric cul de sac and a neighbor right across but not on top of each other. Trees are everywhere and wonderful during the fall season. We had a big night of rain and with the wind it dried up pretty quickly.

Camp store - small, not a lot in it but may be end of the season items only. Mostly shirts and mugs and very little snack food. The camp store staff were all very friendly and helpful and the store has limited WiFi if you stood in the right spot. There is a laundry room available there as well.

Dump station- 2 way and potable water on the other side of it. The only place to drop your trash too.

Trails - lots of trails to choose from. Some were pretty easy some were a little hilly. My favorite was the fern trail - lots of ferns and a very pretty stream. Hiking poles are recommended especially if it rains.

Playground - is available for kids and a huge shelter house too.

Firewood is $6 a bundle and burns well, no slab cut.

Water - have to go up to entrance as the water spouts are still shut off.

Showers - in womens the shower on the left never got warm, other two were fine. There are 4 flush toilets.

    Cute spot but no privacy

This place is great if you want activities for the kids (Has a pool, arcade, etc) but if you want some privacy in the great outdoors this definitely isn’t the place (campsites are in open area extremely close to the cabins) It feels more like camping in a little neighborhood than at a campsite. That being said, we still enjoyed our stay. Staff was extremely friendly and there’s a cute mini golf/ice cream place down the road.

    Quaint, Nice Amount of Activities

Getting used to our new travel trailer so visiting alot of local state parks. This one is clean with a majority of spots shaded. Much to do to occupy a few days. We hiked but there is also rental boats and kayaks, a very nice pool, a mini golf, and many short hiking trails. Just over an hour from Pittsburgh. Restrooms and park very clean.

    Wonderful KOA

    Great!

This is our second time here and we love it! Spots are nice and wooded but plenty of room to spread out and enjoy your site! There is a fire ring and picnic table. Bath house is cleaned constantly during day so it’s always fresh if you need it. Fishing is good and little ones loved it!

    Nice family campground

This is a large campground with play grounds, well maintained pool and grounds, fishing, party pavilions, and store. The staff is nice and helpful. It’s very military positive, even includes a reserved place for the fallen soldiers. Some sites are a bit close, the pull through sites are very ample. Gravel roads and level sites. Lots of grass areas for play and walking. I think the weekends would be too full for my taste but mid week was very quiet.

    Tomlinson Run State Park Campground

Beautiful and quiet for the most part

Very pretty campground. Heavily wooded with tons of shade. Some spots small and others large including some with pullthroughs. Most have electric and there are a few cabins and yurts. Our site was pretty large and the pad was not terribly unlevel. The rest of the area was sloped a bit. Hammock stand and I think they were lantern posts. Drinking water and dump available. Large bathhouse and small camp store with souvenirs, candy, icecream, ice and $6 bundles of wood. Some events sometimes. This time was xmas in july which was cute but the tractor hat rides running through so frequently it got rather annoying since the tractor was so darn loud. A couple drunks fighting late at night and some misbehaved unsupervised children screeching and riding their bikes around the end circle about 100x would stop next to our truck and just stare was just ridiculous but...aside from those incidents pretty quiet for the most part.

    Fun but expensive

Fun not really much to do for adults. Showers really need an update. There are no shower heads.office is really hard to get in contact with. My kids loved it everything you need is in the spot with hookups. Only thing I didn’t like was you have to pay for there wood. getting into contact with the office and had the worst experience with taking a shower with kids playing in the bathroom and looking over into my shower and completely disrespectful but not the parks fault. I’m planning on going back was a great experience for the family. pool was clean and if you forget something there little store has it. Lots of furry friends and quite mornings

    Laundry heaven

Laundry facilities are the best we have encountered. Big machines and dryers making life easier and less time spent doing laundry. Nice little pool and lake for fishing. Lots of full timers here. Nice bath houses

    Fun little campgrpund

If your in the area, this is a good little spot. The facilities are a little rough & they don’t always have someone in the office to help. The laundry facilities would keep me coming alone. They gave HUGE INDUSTRIAL SIZE washers & dryers. Quiet & quaint.

Very Good for an Underway Overnight on I76

Quiet in the camp but lots of highway noise at night if the breeze is just right. Nice pull-thrus with full hookups for overnights. Bring a quarter for a 10 minute shower! There's one 1950's bathhouse with a few stalls for hundreds of RV sites but they figure you're self-contained I suppose. A Kildeer must've had a nest nearby & protested about something many times during the night. Beautiful countryside. Much visible respect for those who have served in the US Armed Forces. Only one guest encountered with Trump hat and one Let's Go B... disrespectful sign. We are of keep-it-simple mindset in a new Ford Transit and were the smallest rig there by far.

    Urban retreat.

Although the campground is close to several large cities, it is very relaxed, wooded, and quiet. We weren’t to sure what to expect as we usually camp in much more remote areas, but we enjoyed the park very much. Operator of the park was very pleasant as he passed by our site several times doing maintenance work, being sure to wave and chat. Will definitely be back!

    It’s really gone down hill

It’s been 2018 since our last visit. The place has really gone downhill. We’ve been to the Madison KOA at least 4 times. What they think is clean now a days is laughable.

I will give you some advice if you do HAVE to stay there but PLEASE READ the bottom.

I usually cabin stay when staying at a branded campground, for $10-20 more a night makes it worth it not to lug my tent and usually tent sites are crap at these places and they have a couple just to say they have some (the ones here are grown over they claim to have 2, one is dug up) I camp at all 3 KOA brands, state parks, family campgrounds, and yogi bears etc.

Everything here is dated and it looks like they only have an interest in fixing things when they can’t avoid it anymore. Other places I’ve been have been putting in the upgrades left and right since camping has seen a serge these past couple of years.

Lake-never seen anyone fish at the lake until this past stay and they caught a blue gill. They have a few small non motor boats no peddle boats so don’t let that mislead you with “boat rental”. You do see things jump so I don’t doubt there’s fish and it’s really pretty in the backdrop.

If you HAVE KIDS young enough to have to keep an eye on the kabins and spots facing the pillow ARE PRIME (kids wait for it to blow up every morning), play ground (basic-not toddler friendly, there’s a sand pit that’s not covered up at night where they HAD some toddler play stuff), and pool (clean and small but does the job, they try to open it ASAP every year) all the activities are around there as well. If you DONT have kids or have a napper in the family, expect constant noise until quiet time. Get a white noise app or bring a sound machine, the fuzzy TV you may get isn’t loud enough. Quiet and shade is on the backside of those Kabins in the pet friendly area.

Campstore is sparse, they need to bring it up date and offer more. Make sure you grocery shopping before you pull in. Camp host family was awesome and usually the lower staff all are. They never had a security gate, car hangers, or escorts to sites so don’t expect that. Activities have always been cheap and bare bones. I think they should get more creative. There isn’t an activities director, the camp hosts run them.

Deals: they participate in Kid Care (May) and Camper Appreciation (September) weekend. Some KOAs don’t, claim they do but can’t actually use it when you try or pickings are slim.

Even with the deals I won’t be back. It’s not worth it. There is nothing new or upgraded and I’m not passing through or here for other things like some are. It’s ok for a weekend, don’t spend a week here with kids they’ll get bored. If you want to be within an hour from Pittsburgh there are PLENTY of other options. Uniontown KOA is 15 minutes further out.

What tipped my scales from PROBABLY won’t be back to ABSOLUTELY WONT be back is….when I arrived my cabin was not clean, there was ultra crusty very dried up insect parts (its the woods, but…no one could have wiped that up? It’s obvious it’s been sitting there awhile) all over the top bunk, a flim/dust on the bed mats. I went to set up the beds and found several coins (from peoples pockets I assume) and an ear pod my toddler could have choked on if I hadn’t I lifted the bed pads like a cleaning person should have and looked. A cleaning person should have found that if they truly did clean the kabin. They sent the cleaning lady, she came in with a duster pad and went over our sleeping pads….no cleaners, towels, or shop vac. After she left, I swept the floor and LOTS of dirt came up. I broke out my sani wipes and did everything I could. I didn’t appreciate paying $90 a night for a tiny kabin to have to clean before my kids could settle in.

Also the door didn’t lock, I didn’t find this out until late in the second day when I went for 10 rounds of bingo and wanted to lock it. I was leaving the next day at noon so I figured tell them at check out. She said I should have told them at check in, she knew exactly the problem I was talking about and that maintenance would have come to fix it had I called. Although I’ve always felt safe there…Non locking door, no security gate, electronic valuables, purse, medications and wife there alone with kids not ideal. Explained that to them, made it out to be no big deal.

The upper staff people were indignant and I was the problem for complaining and I was imagining it. I was given a dirty kabin. They kept trying to minimize what I was telling them, tried to pass the buck ( she-referring to the cleaning lady said there was only 1 coin, she didn’t tell me about the air pod), and said measures were taken that were obviously not. There wasn’t an acknowledgement of the problems nor any apologies from anyone.

If you stay in one of the smaller kabins with a shower, just know there will be a flood and you should wet, turn the water off, lather, then rinse. Also don’t think everyone is showering one after the other or you can do dishes and wash hands as much as you want before showering because it’s very small water tank, it goes lukewarm to cold quick.

I’m crossing them off my list of places to camp, they do not live up to KOA brand image and standards even for a KOA Journey brand.

Our second stay at this koa

We've stayed twice in the off season. There is so much for families to do. We were upgraded to a pull through. The sites are a bit tight. It's been raining and our step out is into mud. To be expected in the area during the winter. If it isn't snow covered, it's muddy. They have a little pizza shop and are right by Gilford Lake. Staff is super friendly. We will be back!
