Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Klemme, IA

Clear Lake State Park Campground and Pilot Knob State Park Campground both welcome pets with designated pet-friendly sites throughout their facilities. Dogs must remain leashed at all times when outside vehicles or tents, with a standard 6-foot leash requirement enforced by park rangers. Wilder Park is a beautiful city park with over 50 sites, about half offering full hookups for under $25 per night in 2022. The campgrounds accommodate various camping styles including tent camping, RV sites with electric hookups, and cabin options at select locations. McIntosh Woods State Park features pet-friendly yurts as an alternative to traditional camping, allowing visitors to bring their dogs while enjoying more structured accommodations. Most campgrounds in the area require pet owners to clean up after their animals, with waste stations available at larger facilities.

Hiking trails throughout the region provide excellent opportunities for exercising dogs, with Clear Lake and McIntosh Woods offering shoreline paths where leashed pets can access water. The walking and bike path at Wilder Park connects to neighboring cities, creating extended recreation options for campers with dogs. Eagle Lake State Wildlife Management Area offers more primitive camping options for those seeking a quieter experience with their pets. Weather considerations are important when camping with dogs in this region, as summer temperatures can reach uncomfortable levels for pets. The campgrounds generally maintain quiet hours from 10 PM to 6 AM, during which excessive barking is discouraged. Pine Ridge Park provides river access for dogs who enjoy swimming, though owners should be aware of water conditions and keep pets away from fishing areas.

    Wilder City Park

    Beautiful city park

Wilder Park is a beautiful city park. Very much a gem, quiet and peaceful . 50 + sites with about half of them full hook up. Costs for a full hook up in 2022 was under $25 a night. The park has two fishing areas, a dog park, pickle ball, volleyball mini golf, basketball and two playgrounds. A beautiful walking and bike path connects the parks to the neighboring cities. A free dump is also available. We highly recommend this park. 1

    Very nice!

Great small town campground. Very quiet, especially on weekdays. Great place to take long walks with great paths and scenery. Small town Iowa with convenience store close by.

    Beed's Lake State Park Campground

    Camping by a beautiful lake

Beeds Lake campground offers an opportunity to camp by a picturesque lake with a beautiful waterfall.

There are many campsites to choose from. My only negative point for Beeds Lake is that the campground is very "campgroundy". Many of the RV sites are very close together, which is the norm in Iowa. However, there are a few on the outskirts that have a little more privacy.

    Things to do:

    • Nice trails to hike or bike
    • Beautiful small lake, great for kayaking and fishing
    • Paddle boat rental available
    • Man-made waterfall
    • Fishing (lake and beneath the waterfall)
    • Enjoy the nearby town of Hampton

    Briggs Woods Park

    Nice campground, lots of options

Brigs Woods is close to Webster City, IA.  There are several campsites, cabins, golf course, access to canoeing or kayaking on the Boone River, along with hiking trails, swimming and fishing.  This is one of the many county parks spread across Iowa.  They have reasonable rates and many do not take reservations.  One area is good for a group of campers as the sites are in a circle.  A walking bridge links the back loop to the other loop that has the bathhouse making it a shorter walk.

There are sites with full hookups, H2O and Elec, or Elec only.  Here is the website: https://www.mycountyparks.com/County/Hamilton/Park/Briggs-Woods-Park-and-Golf-Course.aspx

The wonderful thing about the park is the magnificent trees.

    Eldred Sherwood Park

    Hidden gem (in a cornfield)

This is about as "middle of nowhere" as you can get in Iowa 🙂! The campground offers both electric RV sites and primitive sites (with an accompanying bathhouse ~500 feet away)

The park offers a couple nice walking paths both forested and prairie. The lake is small, but I'm told has some good fishing.

    Pine Ridge Park

Nice campground, but can be loud during the day

I like this campground. It is right on the Iowa river near a takeout, so you can put in upstream and paddle down, or do as I do and paddle upstream and then back down (works when the water flow is not too swift).

This campground is quiet at night, but I will point out that it is near a popular members-only rifle and pistol range. It is very safe as the range points away from the campground into some large dirt mounds, but you may hear the continuous sound of gun fire during the day.

    Otranto Co Park

    Highly recommended family spot

Right off county road and next to the river. The bathrooms and shower facilities are very basic, but the showers are nice and warm. There is a great playground area and a horseshoe pit play area. There is a public access point to the river, adjacent to the park. Lots of big shade trees throughout the camp sites, perfect for hammocks. The spot is very quiet, according to all of our kids. There are electric camp sights camps available. Prices are very reasonable. If you like to wake up and walk a few steps to fish, canoe, paddle board or swim, then this park is a dream come true.

    Tower Rock

Modern cabins and a beautiful park

The two cabins are fairly new and have all of the amenities. My mother-in-law stayed here while visiting recently and we enjoyed spending time at her cabin.

While camping is no longer allowed in Tower Rock park, you can still enjoy a walk down to the river or bicycling on the paved bicycle trail. Tube rentals are available nearby for the Iowa River, and a local outfitter will rent a boat for the day to fish Pine Lake or the small lake northwest of Steamboat Rock.

Pine lake is not that far away either and offers many fun activities.

What to do

Fishing at Beeds Lake: Beed's Lake State Park Campground provides diverse fishing opportunities both on the lake and below the waterfall. "Lovely campground and park with a picturesque lake with a beautiful waterfall. There are a few sites on the outskirts that have a little more privacy," notes Kerry M.

Hiking near Forest City: The trail system at Pilot Knob State Park Campground includes multiple routes for different skill levels. Madison L. mentions, "Pilot knob is AMAZING! There is the town of Forest City just a few miles away and it has pretty much everything you need for a stock up for your next adventure!"

Boating at Clear Lake: The lake offers numerous water activities with boat ramps at multiple access points. "Great campground. Family and friends get together a must here. Close to the beach, town and the lake has great fish. Reserve early!" says Lisa M. about Clear Lake State Park.

What campers like

Spacious campsites: Clear Lake State Park Campground receives praise for its roomier spots. "This is a state campground. So as most will know the sites could be better maintained. I love this campground because they are large spots. Close to the beach and fishing is awesome," writes Lisa M.

Improved facilities: Recent bathroom and shower upgrades at MacNider Campground have impressed visitors. "This campground is fairly small but fits our 43' rig well. The ground and well kept and staff is incredibly friendly and helpful," says Nichole H.

Quiet atmosphere: Lake Cornelia Park provides a more peaceful setting away from busier state parks. "Beautiful county park with lots of camping sites with great views and generous camping spots. It is on a small lake that has good fishing, full hookups, and very nice swimming beach," reports Kristy E.

What you should know

Reservation timing: State parks fill quickly during summer months. Victoria G. notes about Clear Lake State Park: "Camped in mid April and park was not very busy which was nice. Full hook up sites and W/E only sites. Close to town and lots to do."

Site layouts vary significantly: Many campgrounds feature different parking configurations. Dave M. warns about Beed's Lake: "Over half of the campsites are parallel parking. That means if you don't know the person camping across from you, you'll be staring at a stranger just a few feet away during your stay."

Dog friendly campgrounds near Klemme: Most area campgrounds allow dogs with standard leash requirements. At Eagle Lake State Wildlife Management Area, Skip H. notes, "This spot is exposed with virtually no privacy. It's about a 1/4 mile off of the dirt road and makes a left towards the end with water access that is great for a kayak."

Tips for camping with families

Swimming beaches: Several pet-friendly campgrounds around Klemme have designated swimming areas. "We stayed at #142 and it was the perfect tent location. Right on the water, distanced from our site neighbors, and a sandbar nearby for some fishing. The swimming beach was gross, but the hiking trail was great for an easy walk with kids," Katie J. shares about Beed's Lake State Park.

Playground access: MacNider Campground offers exceptional playground options. "This campground is just across the river from East Park, a very large part in Mason city. The river flows through the park and there are several, maybe 5 playgrounds in the park. The campground is also next door to the city pool," explains Desiree R.

Yurt options: Alternative accommodations are available for families wanting more structure. Rhonda P. describes McIntosh Woods: "Beautiful shaded campground near the lake, not far from town if you forgot something. We stayed in one of the two yurts- bunk bed plus a futon and table/chairs inside. Picnic table and grill outside."

Tips from RVers

Timing considerations: For RVers seeking quieter experiences at dog-friendly campgrounds near Klemme, consider shoulder seasons. Lee D. shares about Clear Lake State Park: "We tend to stay at campgrounds during the off or shoulder season for a quieter experience so it was with some apprehension that we reserved this campground for a summer weekend. We were happy to discover that despite being a full campground, it was quiet at almost all hours."

Hookup availability: Full hookups are limited at many state parks. "There are only 6 full hook up sites and the care taker made sure we got one. The rest of the sites are beautiful with electric hook up. Nice clean bathroom and hot shower!" notes Lai La L. about Clear Lake State Park.

Site leveling: Many campgrounds feature variable terrain. Michael M. advises about Lake Cornelia Park: "Clean showers and nice level spots for RV's at least in the back side of park. Full hookups. Can get a little cramped tho when everyone comes in."
