      Newport RV Park

Clean sites and easy hiking trails

The campground is close to relatively easy hiking trails and Portsmouth Dog Park. Clean site areas, but many are on a slight slop so leveling blocks are needed. We Took one of the nearby Trails get to the Portsmouth Publick House restaurant, which is dog friendly, for lunch. The waterfall along the blue trail is picture worthy.

      Waters Edge Family Campground

      Incredible campground

Most amazing weekend with tons of woods (privacy is huge for us). Very friendly guests and staff! Amazing weekend with lots of fun for the kids and even the dogs! We’ve been to campgrounds with playgrounds worse than the waters edge dog park. Every one of us had a great time with the perfect campsite deep in the woods (still able to park my 26’ camper trailer). Swimming pool, great playground, among lots of trails and wooded area surrounding almost every site. Best camping weekends we’ve ever had have been at Waters Edge.

      Newport RV Park

      Best dog park

We got a great pull through full hookup with a 5 minute walk to a huge dog park. There are also a bunch of beautiful trails right from the park

      Fort Getty Campground

      Tent campers

Perfect location for a summer / beach camp. Mostly for RVs but tent site #6 was great. Views of the ocean to wake up too and tucked away from main area.

Worst part is you can’t bring your car on the site. Do not understand this, especially since it was over 95° and we have dogs that need AC, one if which is 14. We did sneak the car up by asking an RV camper to use his land because they block off the entrance with giant tree trunks.

More good stuff, the private pet friendly beaches were great! Small but perfect to relax. No problems with the pets at all and old but clean bathrooms.

      Wilderness Lake Park

      Really enjoyed our time here

Quaint little campground. Not many tenting sites but along a beautiful lake. Pets allowed. Bathrooms close by 10, something to keep in mind. And they’re cash or check only! Taylor Pond is not far and a great hike to bring both kids and pets. This campground was perfect for us and our dog. Bring your own kayaks or use the campgrounds free of charge.

      Ashaway RV Resort

      Rude Staff

Standard crabgrass parking lot with drunks driving around on golf carts and RV's stacked on top of each other. The woman who runs the office is a very angry person and it made the entire visit unpleasant, which is no surprise as she has been hostile and unwelcoming the several times I've visited. Pool looks nice though I guess, I've never dared to use it for fear of breaking one of the many unwritten and unspoken rules. A great place for people who enjoy eating dinner next to your neighbor's septic pipe. I called to ask if they allowed dogs and was told "NO" just to arrive and be asked to park next to the dog park.

      Strawberry Park

      Great atmosphere

Great family campground with lots of activities. A little pricey. Plenty of open space a dog park area. 3 pools a kiddie pool and outdoor in ground hot tub. Golf cart rentals. Very clean and accommodating

      Newport RV Park

Nice, but further out than we thought

This park was very nice, but they advertise being 5 miles away from historic Newport, and it’s more like 8. There are zero bike paths that are immediately accessible and Newport drivers are not walker/biker friendly. No sidewalks on the Main Street to get you here. Ubers and Lyfts can be scarce and very expensive depending on the time of day. Between $16 to $78 rides…so, if you’re not towing, just something to be aware of. Neighbors were super nice and there is a great dog park (we think it’s city owned) with super nice doggo humans. Was good for a short stay - we just wish we had known how far out it really was because we really would have loved to spend more time downtown.

      Whispering Pines Campground

      Great family campground

We stayed for 3 nights, the sites and camp were very clean and well maintained. Everyone was very friendly, lots of things to do - pool, bocce, volleyball, horseshoes, arcade, a small field to play frisbee or ball, mini-golf (mini-golf landscape needs to be refreshed a bit) there is even a very small fenced in dog park which was nice if you want to let your dog off leash to play. We did not experience any screaming kids all night.

    Guide to Baltic

Salt Rock Campground in Baltic offers spacious sites for tents and RVs within a wooded setting adjacent to the Shetucket River. The campground has 71 sites spread across open and shaded areas, with many featuring water and electric hookups. Temperatures typically range from 65-85°F during the peak summer camping season, with occasional thunderstorms common in July and August.

    What to do

Fishing and water activities: The Shetucket River provides fishing opportunities at Salt Rock Campground, with access points near multiple campsites. "There is the river about 10 minutes walk from the site which is absolutely beautiful, and we spent most of our time there," notes one camper who enjoyed the waterfront.

Paddling excursions: Hopeville Pond State Park Campground offers paddling routes for various skill levels. "From here, we paddled south to the end of the pond and up the Pachaug River, eventually reaching the dam at Pachaug Pond. It's an 8 mile paddle with some tricky spots to navigate, but very pretty!" reports Cynthia K.

Seasonal activities: Odetah Camping Resort hosts themed weekend events throughout the summer. "We went two years in a row each on Halloween! They had great amenities and activities for the kids. Plus a costume contest and tricker treating," shares Brian P., highlighting the campground's special events calendar.

    What campers like

Swimming options: Several campgrounds offer swimming facilities, with Waters Edge Family Campground featuring both pond and pool access. "The salt water pool was clean," notes Rebecca S., while another camper mentions, "There's a nice lake to float on, a clean pool to swim in, activities every weekend."

Privacy between sites: Wooded sites at many campgrounds provide separation between neighbors. "Most amazing weekend with tons of woods (privacy is huge for us)," writes Rob L. about Waters Edge, contrasting with more open layouts at other facilities.

Clean facilities: Bathroom and shower quality varies significantly across campgrounds. "The bathhouses are a bit outdated, but clean and functional," reports Philip R. about Salt Rock, while other campers note that facility maintenance can differ depending on campground staff levels and seasonal traffic.

    What you should know

Noise levels: Weekends tend to be busier and louder at most campgrounds. "If you DON'T enjoy privacy, or peace and quiet, or rules being enforced, such as quiet hours...then you will maybe like it here," cautions Lilia W. about Salt Rock, indicating that enforcement of quiet hours varies by location.

Site spacing: Strawberry Park and similar facilities feature sites in close proximity. "Camp spaces are tight. Lots of activities for kids," notes Brian P., highlighting the tradeoff between amenities and privacy at resort-style campgrounds.

Reservation requirements: Most campgrounds fill quickly during summer weekends and holidays. One Burlingame visitor advises, "Avoid holiday weekends and the heat of August if you can," suggesting booking well in advance for peak periods.

    Tips for camping with families

Water activities for kids: Sunfox Campground provides multiple water recreation options. "They have a beautiful pool, playground and a large jumping pillow like a huge trampoline you can't fall off of," writes Tara N., describing features beyond standard playground equipment.

Pet exercise spaces: Many campgrounds provide designated pet areas with various amenities. Odetah Camping Resort includes dog-friendly facilities that complement their other family activities, making it suitable for guests with both children and pets.

Rainy day options: Indoor activities become important during inclement weather. "When my family went here it poured! And we were thankful that there were so many things to do, painting ceramics, karaoke, an arcade," shares Michelle D. about Strawberry Park, highlighting the value of covered recreational spaces.

    Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Electric and water connections vary across campgrounds. "We had a full hook up-50amp pull through site," notes Kari B. about Mystic KOA, while other campgrounds may offer more limited options or require partial hookups.

Site leveling: Prepare for various site conditions across the region. "All sites appeared level and even though they were supposed to have gravel pads, they were mostly a mix of dirt (or mud) and grass with a little gravel," reports Lee D. at Hopeville Pond, suggesting bringing leveling blocks.

Dump station access: Some facilities have limited dumping options. Several reviewers note that dump stations can become congested during peak checkout times on Sundays, and occasional maintenance issues may temporarily close these facilities.
