Rustic but not for RVs

Chose this spot to give us a rest on a trip to Canada (and again to go back to Maine to complete the vacation after we had truck trouble). Chose a pull-through to save time and effort. The first time we chose site 1 (pull through). This past weekend we chose site 38 (pull through).

A few weeks ago when we visited, site 1 was close to the entry gate, but was very confusing as a pull through. I just backed the trailer in. The next morning we saw that the "pull through" had not been maintained in several seasons. Tree limbs and brush intruded on the driveway. There was no way to get a truck and trailer through that without damage.

Yesterday we tried site 38. We had to take the camp road around the entire park, then enter the "loop" section. Even the "main" roads required my wife to watch as I cleared tree trunks; it was difficult to snake our little trailer around the bends. The driveway to site 38 was a mess. Tree limbs and brush invaded the drive, and there was nowhere level on the whole site. I used a record 9 blocks to get 4 levels high on the downhill wheel. When leaving we had to go out through the adjoining site, because there was no way we'd be able to make the turn out of the site onto the 10' wide tote road because of the trees.

A surcharge which makes it $50/night for non-MA residents, plus, no dump station on site and $7 for four pieces of firewood (go to the Walmart 2 miles away instead) will have us skip this place in the future, even if it's in a convenient place.

For those looking to vacation here. There was minimal cell phone coverage with Verizon. I could check messages but wouldn't try to stream. The highway is very loud (I-90 is across the lake). There are a lot of boggy areas and swamps which, although pretty, grew a lot of mosquitoes that kept my wife indoors. A lot of sites were fairly large and private. The beach area is close to the lower sites. Bathrooms and showers were tight and needed updating, but cleaned.

Quiet, Relaxing & Entertaining

Stayed at Wells Camp late August weather was beautiful, temp wise. We did run into a BIT of a storm (more monsoon) when we were on our way back from a brewery visit. A tree across the way had gotten struck by lightening while we were out. Unfortunately it Mass was in drought & we couldn't do a fire. Even with the heavy down pour, the site soaked it up and we had one small puddle. It was relatively quiet, except for the karaoke at a neighboring site, but hey it was his birthday weekend & it gave us entertainment. 😊🎤 We hiked pretty much all the trails in the park that weekend & did a night hike given by a guide. Definitely talking about staying again.

Clean and well-maintained

We stated here in September 2020 and had a great time.

Hiking was very nice, campsite was clean and shady.

Nonadjustable firepit grate. Grrrr.... I wish they were all adjustable, but what can you do.

Plenty of space for a tent, camper and car.

MAN, it's DARK! One time my headlamp failed when out for a bathroom break in the middle of the night, and I had to literally feel the road to try and find my way back. (Bring two lights at night!)

Odd lil campground ... but fine ... but odd

We stayed here for two nights of Tent Camping.   We had a nice time and got to hike a bit and do some kayaking.    They layout is a tad bizarre in my opinion  but we had a nice time.... then the rain came (see video) but that's not the campground's fault.   We left saying that was a fine place but we would not be rushing back.

Pros

  • Several  hiking trails that are accessible directly from the campground

  • Clean bathroom and clean free showers,  push button operation so you get one  temperature, which was warm

  • There is a dedicated sink for dish washing

  • The camp sites are very well spaced apart so you get plenty of privacy and it's very quiet

Cons

  • There are only two bathrooms for the entire campground.  We were right next to it so it was fine for us but for many sites it would be **literally  over a ten minute walk. ** I was wondering why the bathroom had a tiny parking lot ... it's so people can drive there because it's so far way from so many sites.
  • There is one place to put your trash and it's by the main entrance / check in  location.  So to throw out trash after you cook ... you have to drive to drop off your trash.  We walked once to see how it would be and it was about 20 minutes round trip.
  • You can hear traffic noise from the highway
  • I know you're out doors when you camp and I get that but the mosquitoes here were something out of a soviet lab.  There were super intense and we had to take refuge more than we often do when camping.   We had candles, bug spray and even fog but at times it was no match for these fellas.

  • This is inside our HQ Tent (Eureka Northern Breeze 12). It does not have a floor so the rain creeps into the ground but the tent did not leak!

No Day of Reservations

Beautiful area, and I’m sure the campground is great. Just a note- there are no day of reservations. I’m traveling/passing through.

Hiking Gem in Sturbridge

Beautiful campground in a nice central location nearby several nice towns in Central Massachusetts. The hiking is some of the best I have seen from a campground in the area, with a huge system of trails which are all very well marked. These trails vary greatly in terms of difficulty, a few of the trails are doable in less than 15 minutes if you maintain a quick pace. The harder trails, including the one going up to Carpenter's Rocks are more strenuous and feature a good amount of elevation gain, rocky terrain, and very worthwhile views for the trouble.

Not usually too busy on the trails, though expect hordes of people at the parking lot especially during the warmer months. Firewood is easily available, if a bit pricey, and the tent sites are generously sized with plenty of room for multiple shelters. Have spotted beavers deep into some of the water-adjacent trails, as well as many species of birds.

Definitely give this one a try if you're in the area. Rental fees for the tent sites are very reasonable, and it's worthwhile to come for the trails and views alone.

Well maintained and clean

Gorgeous campground. It’s red clay instead of sand. I knocked a star because I think the swimming area could be bigger and raked.

Wells State Park

I was very pleasantly surprised by this Park, just tucked away off of Route 49 in Sturbridge. While I didn’t get to explore the entire grounds, I was impressed with how beautiful and shaded the Park was and all the trails it had to offer. Plus, it is practically down the road from Treehouse Brewery, near Sturbridge Village, Hyland Orchard and countless other community amenities.

It is absolutely lovely in the fall, especially on the water at the campers’ beach. Quite calm and scenic. Site 2, right nearby, is a great spot. Fairly large and literally feet away from the beach.

Great campground for dry camping

Tucked away just outside Sturbridge on the road to Spencer (rt-49) is on of Mass State Parks nicest little gems. There are no hook-ups here, but the sites are large, well spaced, and shaded. Great little swimming lake as well as a popular hiking trail. If you're looking for a little escape to the woods, this place is it...

Clean, Easy, Family Friendly, Nice Views

Wells State Park camp grounds recently got new bathrooms and they are so clean! The campsites are a nice size to drive your car up to and still have ample tent/picnic table/fire space. Camp sites are clearly labeled and none are that far of a walk from the beach or bathrooms.

There were lots of families camping when I last visited, and also a handful of dogs joining campers.

Easy and affordable campsite to book.

Decent little park, great staff, so-so facilities

We booked site #39 online, based on proximity to bath house (at least, it looked that way on the map). No pictures of individual campsites on the ReserveAmerica booking site, so we were kind of winging it. We unexpectedly arrived at the campground around 10pm, after a long and grueling day on the road. The site (or what we could see of it) seemed nice, but was very un-level, with a steep, narrow driveway. Combined with the winding, tree-lined loop road, there was no way we were going to be able to back into that site in the dark. We drove back to the camp office to hand our tag back in, ready to find a cheap motel for the night. Much to our delight, they had a pull-through site (#15), that had just been vacated minutes before we got there. So, we drove over to said site, and it was much better. We were able to pull in and get leveled relatively easily, even in the pitch-black. The site was very spacious, close to the bath house, and had a really nice view of Walker Pond through the surrounding trees.

Again, we were only here for a quick overnight stop on the way home from Maine, but from what little we saw, this seemed like a nice little state park. Most sites were heavily wooded, and the pond is very pretty. Staff was also very friendly and helpful. Bath houses, were ok: roomy, well-lit, but quite old and a bit smelly. Don’t think they are cleaned very often.
