Best RV Parks & Resorts near Ridgway, CO

Several RV parks surround Ridgway, Colorado, offering convenient access to the San Juan Mountains and nearby attractions. Ouray Riverside Resort provides full hookups with 50-amp service and is open year-round, featuring big-rig friendly sites along the Uncompahgre River. Dakota Terraces Campground at Ridgway State Park offers electric hookups during winter months with community water spigots available for filling tanks. Riverbend RV Park in Montrose operates from April to October with full hookup sites that accommodate large motorhomes. "Gorgeous views and they have some huge pull through sites for big rigs," notes one visitor about Ouray Riverside Resort, where concrete pads provide level parking for larger RVs.

Cell service varies significantly throughout the region's RV campgrounds. Verizon users report strong signals at Ridgway State Park but limited connectivity in mountain parks like Silverton Lakes RV Resort. Navigation to some RV parks requires careful planning, particularly for larger motorhomes approaching Ouray, where sharp switchbacks and mountain roads present challenges. Most RV parks in the area are pet-friendly and offer on-site dump stations, though Black Canyon RV Park is an exception with no sanitary dump available. Winter RV camping is limited primarily to Ouray Riverside Resort and Dakota Terraces at Ridgway State Park, where one loop remains open with electric hookups but water fill stations are winterized. Propane refill services are available at select locations including Cedar Creek RV Park in Montrose.

    Lost Trail

Lovely site near the Rio Grande

Most sites are Park and walk into fire pit and table area. A few scattered back-in sites. No pull through. Nice wooden picnic tables, men and women’s bathrooms. Level tent sites, water pump on site but nothing available in October. No cell service. Loads of down wood for collection. Close to river access

South Rim Campground — Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

    Winter camping!

We stayed in the winter off season in Loop A, since it’s the only loop open. They plow Loop A and all pull through sites. There was no fee for the campsite, just the park entrance fee. There’s no power in this loop and there’s no water since it’s shut off in the winter. There are pit toilets which are pretty clean for pit toilets. There were a few campers but they were spread so far apart since everyone needed pull through sites cause it snowed a lot recently. Some places the snow is up to your thighs and some places it’s up to your waist.

Even without amenities, we were happy a campground was open in the Colorado winter.

    Ouray Riverside Resort

    Beautiful Ouray

Nestled in a valley with beautiful view next to Uncompahgre River with wonderful walking path. Gravel parking right off hwy 550. Laundry, showers, restaurant. Primitive cabins and fully equipped cabins. Very friendly staff. Pet friendly. Close to uptown shopping and eating & grocery store. Pull thru and back in sites. Overflow parking for extra vehicles for a charge. Down side-you have to trailer to trailheads for SXS riding. Most tail heads are small parking areas but the riding in the mountains is priceless. Been here twice, same site and would go again.

    Ouray KOA Holiday

    Quaint and quiet

Stayed at a small back-in site with 30 amp & electric in our camper van. The site had a fire ring, grill, and picnic table. Loved that they had a store, laundry room, and firewood for sale. The store closes at 5:00 & we arrived at 5:10 but the office lady still checked us in and made sure we had firewood. The campground is well-maintained and clean.

    Little Molas Lake Campground

    Poplar picturesque site

6/28/22 - 7/12/22: This was a nice retreat for us. It is a very popular place on the weekend, but during the week it is much quieter. Most of the weekend traffic is heading to the trailhead for hiking or biking. There are 8 sites here, several large enough for my 34’ fifth-wheel trailer, one is a pull-through with two sites. Vault toilet, no water or dump station. There was 1-bar 5G Verizon, and 2-bars AT&T 4G that were both spotty; cloud cover between the lake and Silverton caused occational intermittent connectivity. Elevation is about 10,300 and posed a problem for our generator that caused severe spark-plug fouling. But, re-jetting the carburetor from a #61 to #58 solved the problem.

South Rim Campground — Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

    Camping under the Stars

Campsites are open year round, but drinking water is only available mid-May through mid-October. Electric hookups are in Loop B which was closed for the season. There are no water hookups or dump stations at South Rim Campground.

Stayed in Loop A. Vault Toilets and potable drinking water available. No Cell Service. $20/night via online reservation system.

Dakota Terraces Campground — Ridgway State Park

    Winter camping

If you are looking for a quiet and serene camping experience in the winter, this is your campground. Ridgeway State Park has one loop open during the winter in Dakota Terraces. They have winter rates. And they have great cell signal if you have Verizon and supposedly AT&T. (There’s a cell tower in one of the park’s campgrounds.)

[Internet. Verizon via iPhone 12: 14 mbps down and 4 mbps up with 51 ms ping.]

Read all the campground details straight from the park’s website before winter camping. Keep in mind the guest services building is closed for the winter. That means no laundry or showers. The restroom building is open. The dump station is open but the water fill is shut off. You can, however, fill you tanks up using the water spigots throughout the campground. We use a 5-gallon jerry can to transport the water. We’ve been here through a winter storm and they haven’t frozen yet. They also plow the roads.

The visitor center is open which you should check out! There’s an overlook there. This time of year part of the reservoir is frozen. You can get loaner snow shoes at the visitor center! How awesome! Since it’s snowed almost a foot, we’ve been snowshoeing all over the park and through the trails and closed campgrounds.

There’s like 5 campsites occupied. It’s so quiet. We have our own little winter wonderland.

    Woods Lake Campground

Camping among aspens with mountain views

Fantastic national forest campground. Mountain views all around. Woods Lake itself was a short hike away. Enjoyed fishing there with beautiful views. The campground is over 9400 feet in elevation. I did some huffing & puffing while walking around there. Our campsite, #4, was narrow & deep; no problem for a camper van. It has a table, metal fire ring/grill, lantern poll and a tent pad set back deeper in the woods. Surrounded by aspens. Camped there in early June. Vault toilets were not yet open, but clean portable chem toilets were provided. Potable water stations were not yet turned on. Helpful camp host was on duty. Firewood was available at $10/bundle. Our site, as well as others, were private & reasonably separated from others. No shower and hookups. Deer everywhere. Saw sign of mountain lions & bears on the nearby hiking trails. This is one of the prettiest national forest campgrounds that I ever camped in.

Blue Spruce RV Park & Cabins

    Beautiful wooded RV campground

We stayed at blue spruce for a week while working remotely which required good cell coverage. We have Verizon and despite having no service on the drive to blue spruce, once we arrived the bars lit up! This campground was great, nice clean grounds, shaded pines every where, a playground, horses, and a short drive down to valicito lake. They have full hookups, a country store, a short hiking trail, games center, and a group pavilion. The only negative thing to say was that many sites were too close to each other... We like our space and are used to state parks. We really loved our stay!

Guide to Ridgway

Ridgway sits at the northern gateway to the San Juan Mountains at an elevation of 6,985 feet, where alpine terrain meets high desert landscapes. RV sites near Ridgway, Colorado typically remain open from April through October, with limited year-round options. Winter temperatures frequently drop below freezing, requiring campers to prepare for rapid weather changes regardless of season.

What to do

Riverside walking trails: Ouray Riverside Resort offers easy access to walking paths along the Uncompahgre River. "We loved the trail into town - an easy walk to the hot springs pool or to grab something to eat," notes one visitor at Ouray Riverside Resort, who adds that despite being "a little less rustic than our preferred type of CO camping...the location and beautiful views definitely make up for that."

Historic sites access: The area features numerous mining-era attractions within short driving distance. A visitor at 4J + 1+ 1 RV Park mentions its location is "right in the middle of town, there are RV hookups and tent only sites. Sites are relatively close together so not a ton of privacy, but the tent sites have a bit more trees and back into the mountain range."

Hiking trailheads: The Ouray Perimeter Trail can be accessed directly from some campgrounds. One camper reports, "This little place is on the outskirts of Ouray, tucked into the base of the mountain (perimeter trail actually has an access point at the park)."

What campers like

Reliable utilities: Full-service hookups maintain steady performance even during peak season. At Riverbend RV Park & Cabins, one reviewer praised the functionality: "The WiFi was five stars which is rare in most RV parks. Super fast speeds."

Hot showers: Many Ridgway area campgrounds maintain clean bathroom facilities with ample hot water. "Bathrooms are very roomy, and they have plenty of hot showers," notes one camper about 4J + 1+ 1 RV Park, while another mentions that "the facilities are very clean and well maintained."

River access: Several campgrounds feature direct creek or river frontage for cooling off during summer months. A visitor at Silverton Lakes RV Resort noted that "Animas Creek flows through the edge of the campground, near the tent sites" adding value to the camping experience.

What you should know

Varying site sizes: Some RV sites near Ridgway offer more space than others. A visitor at Black Canyon RV Park & Campground noted, "We had an awesome lot but they are all very nice!" while others report tighter spacing at different parks.

Winter preparation: Limited water availability from November through March requires planning. "During our visit it was quiet, we were told it does get very busy in summer," reports one camper, highlighting the seasonal nature of the region's campgrounds.

Reservation policies: Many parks operate under strict arrival and departure rules. One camper noted, "We stayed here the end of may and just drove up no reservations needed. Well maintained campground."

Mountain driving challenges: Routes to some campgrounds involve steep grades and sharp turns. A reviewer cautions about Silverton Lakes: "it's all dirt roads. Prepare for dust and for your rig to get plenty dirty."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Some parks feature dedicated play areas for children. Cedar Creek RV Park includes "a large pet yard as well as a grassy area with a large play structure for the kids," according to a recent visitor at Cedar Creek RV Park.

Safety considerations: Campgrounds closer to town centers typically offer better security than more remote options. As one camper advises, "If you don't have a 4x4 this is the place to stay. So many trails so close like 4 miles max."

Noise factors: Highway proximity affects sound levels at certain campgrounds. One visitor noted, "Some road noise at night but nothing intrusive," when describing their experience at Cedar Creek.

Pet accommodation: Most campgrounds allow pets with specific restrictions. A reviewer at Ouray Riverside Resort mentioned, "The campground is dog friendly," though noting that "no fire rings, but there is a communal fire pit."

Tips from RVers

Leveling requirements: Be prepared with blocks as many sites require adjustments. One RVer at Red Mountain Motel & RV Park warned, "Make sure you have blocks as they are not level at all."

Internet connectivity: Cell signal varies by provider throughout the region. One visitor reported, "Strong cell signal from all three major providers AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile," explaining they needed good connectivity because they were "doing work/virtual schooling from the mountains."

Weather precautions: Freezing temperatures can occur even in early fall. A camper staying in September noted, "Owners required disconnecting water at night to prevent their water pipes from freezing and bursting" when temperatures dropped into the 30s.

Propane availability: Several parks offer onsite refill services. Cedar Creek RV Park "has onsite propane refill services. They pick up your tanks and bring them back, no muss, no fuss. Just let the front desk know and they will tell the propane guy your site number."
