Expensive and not great

I stayed here because KOA’s are predictable at least. Kind of like eating at McDonald’s. It’s not great but convenient. This one though seemed to have a lot of extra rules / signage that all seemed to save them $ and cost me more. Expensive is not a bad thing if it comes with a better experience but that’s not the case with this place. Just expensive.

We did not stay here but we did come here for breakfast. My stepdad loved his coffee and our breakfast was fantastic. The woman working was great as well. Great camp store as well. Will definitely stay here when we come back with the rv

Crowded

Very busy and lots of out of state campers at this campground. I prefer camping off the grid so this was a struggle to get used to during our weekend. Bathrooms were okay. Breakfast at the restaurant at KOA was nice! I’ve camped outside of Ouray before and prefer the other camping options way more.

Location!

The best thing about this park was the location. It is located close to Ouray and many activities in the area. The park also offers beautiful scenery and it is a wonderful Basecamp for exploring the area. There is a state park nearby with a beautiful lake and kayaking. There are hiking trails nearby and many wonderful off road four wheel trails.

The park can accommodate big rigs and we were able to get our 38 foot 5’er into the parking and into a spot, but I would not call the park big rig friendly due to tight turns and small sites.

Amenities include a nice camp store, laundry facilities, restaurant with a nice outdoor deck, on property horseback riding, on property jeep rental, hiking trails. There were bathrooms and showers at the back of the property but it was too far to walk from the front of the property so we never used them. The laundry facilities are a little small for this sized park and we weren’t able to do laundry because it was too busy.

One big problem was electrical outages during 100° weather. The electrical system in the park just cannot keep up. Luckily we had solar and were able to maintain AC until evening hours.

There is one small hot tub that was usually very busy we didn’t use that either.

There are nice tent camping spots.

Most of the people in the park Had four wheelers or motorcycles for off-road trails. The off-road trails in this area are amazing and shouldn’t be missed. We took a tour from Ouray and thoroughly enjoyed it.

We took a horseback ride from the park and had a lovely time. The horses were very safe and great for a family experience. They also offer 15 minute rides for children.

We would stay again if we were in the area.

A One Night Stand, Forever in my Heart!

I was driving cross country for my daughter’s wedding in Yankee Boy Basin. Found this Gem while searching for a spot for the night. I only needed a place for the night but so wish it was more than that. The campground was amazing, the staff were awesome. The coffee in the café was divine. I stayed at the back of the grounds, not far from the showers. The camp was clean, restrooms were clean, it was a great stay. I wish I could’ve stayed more than one night and hope to someday return.

Undisclosed and bizarre dumping fee, and generally disappointing.

There were a lot of disappointments with the Ouray KOA, but the main reason we would never stay there again they tried to charge us a $15 fee *after* we used the dump station after our stay where we paid for a very expensive RV site.  Yes, I do mean that paying customers who stay in their RV sites are charged an additional $15 (!) fee when you dump your tank at the end of your stay.  No, that is not normal for campgrounds to do that.  And no one mentioned when we made the booking, there were no signs at the dump station, no mention in the booking email, etc.  It was basically an attempt to charge us after the fact without any warning for a service that is normally included at any normal campground.

Aside from that, at $83/night it was way overpriced.  They even added a $6 "resort" fee to our bill!  WTF.  Oh, and an extra $20 fee to choose our site, which is normally free at any other campground.  It had almost no amenities, even the kids playground was on the map but didn't exist (apparently it's on order).  They do have lots of things they can charge you for, like a camp store that is basically just a clothing giftshop, and a restaurant that charges $16 for a hamburger (more than downtown restaurants in Ouray).   It's a bit of drive out of town, and there are no hiking trails or attractions nearby.  You have to drive into Ouray to do anything.  We should have stayed at the nicer and cheaper independent campgrounds located right in town like the 4J or the Ouray Riverside Resort.

One of my favorites

Gorgeous! Our site was in amongst the trees, backed by a rapidly running creek with views of snow capped mountains. The site was large with a firepit down by the creek all set up with logs to burn. They offer a text = fire log delivery service too.

We were greeted upon arrival and shown to our site, gifted with KOA rubber bracelets too.

There was live music nightly at the cute "mountain top" restaurant. Food was ok and a bit pricey, only ate there once. Bathrooms were clean and well maintained. They picked up trash bags right from your site.

At the back of the campgrounds was Bachelors Stables, horse trail riding was offered which we highly recommend. Our daughter visited and pet the horses daily after her first ride, the owner was very accommodating.

You can rent Jeeps

We heard a rumor that this KOA was getting a full upgrade to make them a four seasons location with heated concrete pads.

Heaven in the mountains

Wow is all I can say! After surviving towing the airstream up Red Mountain pass, we pulled into the KOA and couldn’t be more happy. Our site backed up to a stream that sounded wonderful with running water. Each site has a picnic table and a combo fire ring/grill. They even welcome you with three large fire logs! They now offer horseback riding right from inside the KOA. They have everything from teepees to tent, cabin and RV camping. A great restaurant on site with a well stocked store and laundry facilities. This place is really well run. The only complaint is the WiFi, which is non existent, however, they are currently working on that and should have campwide WiFi by summer.

Mountain beauty

I typically rate campgrounds as they fit into 1 of 5 categories. This campground will be rated as a Basecamp — grounds that offer a comfortable home base that you’re happy to return to after a day of exploring the surrounding area. Ratings for this category are based on: Value to cost: 5 Overall grounds: 4 Utility of sites (hookups, layout, accessibility): 5 Local Attraction Proximity: 5 Reservation Process/Ease of Getting a Site: 4 Amenities: 4 Customer Service: 5 Cleanliness: 5

Ouray is a wonderful place... tucked away in the mountains, surrounded by peaks and pines. The Ouray KOA encapsulates that vibe. It is rustic and cozy with pine trees and cabins. The new owner is very new... having taken ownership in Jan 2020. We had some time to speak with him and he is a great guy. He was explaining his extended plan for the grounds and it sounds epic, and luxury. The current vibe is nice and we appreciated the wonky nature of the sites (we were tucked in right to a border fence and pretty close to our neighbors, but not in an overly imposing way). It’ll be interesting to see what the future holds for these grounds.

At any rate, we liked the layout. There is a cafe with actually good food! We got the breakfast burrito twice. The cafe is open for breakfast in mornings and live music and dinner on most evenings. The cabins looked great. Everything was clean and basic including dishwashing area, laundry and the office. There is a nice stream running through the grounds.

Historic Ouray is 15 minutes up the road as is the town hot springs. Ridgway is 10 minutes away and Ridgway State Park another 5. We were able to hike in the San Juan Mountains and drive the Million Dollar Highway to Silverton within an hour.

The park seems popular so you might want to plan your trip to Ouray ahead of time. The sites are a bit expensive but the area commands the cost. WiFi is useless, that was our biggest problem. This place is a solid 4.5 on its way to an optimized 5, but for now, we have to round down to a 4 star place.

KOA Ouray

As always KOA didn’t disappoint us. Ouray is such a beautiful place, and to come “home” and rest in a peaceful place was even better! There are stream sites and open gravel sites. I really enjoyed their text message service for firewoods, ice or questions..

Pro: -clean bathroom and shower -breakfast and dinner service.. although food was okay

  • open and space. I loved site #5 (water following right behind us.. it was great to hear the peaceful sound while looking at the amazing stars and skyline, in front of the firepit!)

Con: -close to the main road, especially for sites by the entrance, we could hear cars all the time. -WIFI is there but omg.. good luck catching it..

We got a spot by their little pond. Pleasant staff, bathroom and shower facilities available. No picnic table, but had a fire pit, plenty of shade, and quiet despite our spot being right off the road.

Best spot for tent, RV, & cabin!

The spots are spread out enough that you have privacy, there’s attendants around 24 hours of the day to help, and it’s hands down the cleanest place we’ve ever stayed. We rented a cabin (we stopped in on July 4th, sold out of tent spots) but they managed to accommodate us last minute. The staff is incredibly nice, and the price was right. Our cabin is the 2nd biggest option, it included: a queen, bunk beds, love seat, fridge, sink, and a microwave.

Beautiful campground in a beautiful location! Wake up to Mountain Views in the distance. Quiet area, easy access. CLEAN, private showers-I enjoyed the fact that the showers weren’t separated men/women but that they were actual bathrooms with shower, toilet, and sink. They brought firewood to us, and were so friendly. Our site was big and had a nice fire pit.
