Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Ridgway, CO

Ridgway State Park campgrounds welcome pets throughout their three distinct camping areas—Elk Ridge, Dakota Terraces, and Pa-Co-Chu-Puk. Each campground provides pet-friendly accommodations including tent sites, RV spots with full hookups, and select cabins or yurts where pets can stay with their owners. Most sites feature picnic tables and fire rings, with Dakota Terraces offering covered picnic tables that provide shade during light rain showers. Leashed pets must remain under control at all times while in the park. Nearby, Ouray KOA and Ouray Riverside Resort both accommodate pets in their tent sites, RV spaces, and cabin options, giving travelers multiple pet-friendly lodging choices within a short drive. The campground areas feel natural with sites spaced out comfortably, though Dakota Terraces offers limited tree cover which can make summer camping challenging in direct sunlight.

Free dispersed camping with pets is available along Last Dollar Road near Telluride, approximately 20 miles from Ridgway. This undeveloped camping area allows dogs without restrictions but lacks amenities like drinking water or waste facilities, requiring campers to pack out all pet waste. For those seeking unique accommodations, Orvis Hot Springs in Ridgway permits pets in their campground area, though dogs aren't allowed in the pool areas. The campground resembles a parking lot with raised tent platforms and fire pits, primarily serving as base camp for hot springs access rather than destination camping. Hikers with dogs will appreciate the trail system within Ridgway State Park and nearby public lands, though wildlife encounters require keeping pets leashed for safety. Winter campers find Dakota Terraces particularly appealing, as one loop remains open year-round with electric hookups, and the visitor center offers loaner snowshoes for exploring snow-covered trails with four-legged companions.

    Telluride Town Park Campground

    Telluride Town Park

This campsite is great if you want to do Telluride on a budget - it's free. It's right next to the town and is used a lot for Telluride's summer festivals. Its more than a campground it is also where a lot of town events are held and also has sports venues. There's also grills, bathrooms, picnic tables, a dog park, and a pond. Unless you're at a festival, the campground isn't where you will want to spend your time though. The campground is very close to Bridal Veil Falls, a huge free fall waterfall. You can drive or hike up to it, and climb around on the rocks and get blasted by cold water from the falls. It's huge. There's also a bunch of awesome hikes around Telluride - the San Juans are my favorite part of Colorado.

You get what you pay for...

We spend three days here between some disperse camping in the region and could not say enough good things. The staff were extremely friendly, this sites were clean, dog park great, river amazing, and location to Montrose perfect.

The laundry rooms was clean with new equipment.

The Wifi was five stars which is rare in most RV parks. Super fast speeds.

    We will be back!

    Owl Creek Pass

    Breathtaking but NO

This was such a magically beautiful location. The aspens were amazing, the surrounding forest, flowing river and waterfalls, and sweeping mountain scapes were breathtaking. Why only two stars? Well, first off, our campsite seemed too perfect to still be open, and it was. Unbeknownst to us, we were the only place for miles that you can get cell service, so we had 20-30 “visitors” a day drive up to our little round about spot to get a phone call or text out. That’s more people I see a day than even my own neighborhood and far more than I want to see on my outdoor exhursion.

Ok, so we picked a bad spot.... but every place we hiked and drove was overrun with cattle. Within an hour of our arrival and set up, cows began to wander over, pooping all over the place. Cows were EVERYWHERE- all the way up to Silver Jack reservoir and further. That made the flies worse than normal. They were the only “wildlife” we saw in four days... 15-20 at a time... hundreds overall. In all of my years camping in Colorado, I’ve never experienced this. Every camper we encountered complained about it. I loved the views, but I’ll never be back to camp.

    Riverbend RV Park & Cabins

    Riverbend Montrose Colorado

Book it Now! This RV park will fill up quickly. Riverbend is a beautiful park in a fantastic location. What sets this park apart from others is the owners and camp hosts. The park's owners are exceptional; everything they do is done for the benefit of their guests.

     A few examples include oversized RV sites, WiFi, and they even love dogs because they have an off-lease dog park. The camp hosts here are fantastic;

Rob and Becky and Kirby and Robin are two couples that truely went above and beyond. They are simply the best!

We had such a great time we invited several of our friends to come down and rent a cabin, which they all did, and we had an absolute blast! The most amazing trip ever!

    Ouray Riverside Resort

    Beautiful Ouray

Nestled in a valley with beautiful view next to Uncompahgre River with wonderful walking path. Gravel parking right off hwy 550. Laundry, showers, restaurant. Primitive cabins and fully equipped cabins. Very friendly staff. Pet friendly. Close to uptown shopping and eating & grocery store. Pull thru and back in sites. Overflow parking for extra vehicles for a charge. Down side-you have to trailer to trailheads for SXS riding. Most tail heads are small parking areas but the riding in the mountains is priceless. Been here twice, same site and would go again.

    Black Canyon Dispersed Camping

    Good camping 👍🏼

Great spot. Didn’t say pet friendly on the reviews but my dog and I found a nice little secluded campsite off to the right and down a less jagged road. Be careful. I wouldn’t try to go too deep looking for a campsite during wet season or if you’ve got a low hanging vehicle without 4WD.

    Mavreeso Campground

    Soothing

Beautiful campground. Right next to the West Dolores river which drowns out any road noise. Private land next door has a few beautiful horses. Very pet friendly too. Very close to attractions like Mesa Verde National Park. Would have given it 5 stars if there were showers.

Guide to Ridgway

Dispersed camping near Ridgway, Colorado ranges from high mountain meadows to forested areas at elevations between 6,000 to 10,000 feet. The region's unique microclimate creates warm summer days averaging 70-85°F, while nighttime temperatures can drop into the 40s even in July. Seasonal snow typically closes many dispersed camping areas from November through late April, with spring mud season limiting access until late May.

What to do

Morning hikes from campground trails: Access the Perimeter Trail directly from Amphitheater Campground for a 4.2-mile loop around Ouray. "We loved it. It was quiet and peaceful. Fairly large campground but everyone was respectful and it was extremely quiet sleeping under the stars," notes camper Brandi F. The trail offers connections to Box Canyon Falls and several other Ouray trails.

Fly fishing in stocked ponds: The Pa-Co-Chu-Puk area at Ridgway State Park provides easy fishing access within walking distance of campsites. "Great fishing in the tailwaters below the dam, 5 minute walk from campground to the river or two stocked ponds. River is catch and release," reports John D. The fish cleaning station at the bathrooms is well-equipped for teaching kids fishing basics.

Jeep trails and 4WD routes: Camp along Last Dollar Road for direct access to mountain passes. "There are a handful that have absolutely amazing views. Some of the best in Colorado. I had good cell service too (working remotely)," shares Whitney J. The road connects Ridgway to Telluride, with access to numerous side trails including the Imogene Pass and Alpine Loop routes.

What campers like

Heated winter camping options: Dakota Terraces at Ridgway State Park keeps one loop open year-round with electric hookups for winter campers. "We stayed here on our way to Telluride and it was a great for recharging! Lots of space between campsites," mentions Emilie K. The visitor center has loaner snowshoes available during winter months.

Covered picnic areas during rain: Many campsites at Dakota Terraces Campground include sheltered tables. "Most sites have a covered picnic table which was very helpful during the frequent light rain showers," explains Kristin K. This feature proves particularly valuable during July and August when afternoon thunderstorms are common in the San Juan Mountains.

Hot spring soaking options: Orvis Hot Springs offers 24-hour access to natural hot pools for overnight campers. "It's $50/per person per night but it includes 24/hr access to the hot springs, showers, coffee, etc. The tent sites are nice with fire pits and raised platforms," reports Grace. The clothing-optional pools range in temperature from 98°F to 114°F.

What you should know

Altitude considerations: Camping at Alta Lakes puts you above 11,000 feet elevation. "Overall good spot, at pretty high altitude. There was a bit of snow," shares Paul H. Even summer nights can drop below freezing, so pack accordingly with warm sleeping bags and layered clothing.

Road access challenges: Many dispersed camping areas require high-clearance vehicles. "The road to Alta can get rough after heavy rain and at the end of the season," warns Ryan F. Road conditions worsen after storms, with some routes becoming impassable for standard passenger cars.

Variable cell service: Coverage varies dramatically by location and carrier. "I have AT&T and had good coverage here," notes David about Last Dollar Road, while other nearby camping areas have no service. Download offline maps before arrival, especially for remote dispersed sites.

Tips for camping with families

Family-friendly campgrounds: Elk Ridge at Ridgway State Park offers supervised activities throughout summer. "This park is a great place for families because there is so much to do, from the endless bike trails to fishing and water access," says Jason S. The visitor center runs Junior Ranger programs on weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Swimming beach access: Ridgway Reservoir has a designated swimming area with sandy beach. "Beautiful swimming beach, plenty of hiking trails. Restrooms were always clean," mentions Bob M. The water remains chilly (55-65°F) even in summer months, with warmest temperatures in August.

Playground facilities: Several campgrounds have built-in play areas for children. "A great park for kids. I loved the activities, Hikes, swimming and absolutely stunning views," shares Jennifer D. about Ridgway State Park, which maintains playgrounds at both the Elk Ridge and visitor center locations.

Tips from RVers

Campground amenities: Ouray Riverside Resort provides direct access to town via river trail. "We loved the trail into town - an easy walk to the hot springs pool or to grab something to eat. The campground is clean and offers full hookups," reports Delci L. The walking path runs 1.8 miles along the Uncompahgre River to downtown Ouray.

Site leveling requirements: Many campsites in the area require leveling equipment. "Needed all our levelers as the site is sloped downhill," shares Ursula about Dakota Terraces. Bring extra blocking materials, especially for sites closer to the reservoir which have more pronounced slopes.

Utility limitations: Not all campgrounds provide full hookups. "I stayed in the RV lot which didn't offer a ton of privacy. But the tent/rv camping on the hill above does and has even more stunning views," notes Allison M. about Pa-Co-Chu-Puk campground. Dump stations are available at Ridgway State Park's entrance station for those staying at partial-hookup sites.
