Quiet hours at Shady Knoll start at 10 p.m., and by most accounts, campers actually observe them. This privately owned campground in Brewster has operated for more than 50 years, and the routines show: sites are level, fire pits and picnic tables are standard at each spot, and the bathhouses stay consistently clean. The grounds run on a tiered layout shaped by the natural topography, which means some sites sit higher than neighboring ones, and with limited vegetation screening between sites, exterior lights from RVs can bleed across into adjacent spaces after dark. Calling ahead to ask staff for site recommendations is worth the effort.
"Everything is well maintained and clean," notes Whitney L., who stayed six nights in 2022. Site ground cover varies across the property, running from grass to gravel to wood chips depending on location. Tent sites tend to have more foliage separation than RV-oriented spots. The showers draw consistent praise for hot water and strong pressure, and a laundromat is available at both bathhouses. Cell service on AT&T is solid in most areas, though campground WiFi weakens toward the back of the property.
The campground sits within easy reach of several draws along the Cape. A short nature trail connects from the back of the grounds near sites 98 to 100 to the Eddy Property, which includes a loop through community gardens and, via Lower Road, a half-mile walk to bluffs overlooking the bay and Brewster Flats. The Cape Cod Rail Trail is also nearby for cycling. Nickerson State Park Campground is a short drive away and expands recreation options considerably. A small grocery store sits a two-minute walk from the entrance.
Full hookups accommodate RVs up to 67 feet, and Whitney L. describes "ample variety of hookups from water only to full service." The season runs May 15 through October 15, with rates from $50 to $110 per night. Reservations are available and advisable. Pets are welcome. The campground works well for RV travelers wanting full hookups with proximity to Cape Cod's bay-side beaches and rail trail, as well as tent campers who call ahead to secure a more sheltered site.
