The Mount Rushmore State is home to seven National Park Service sites that range from jewel-encrusted caves to ancient fossil beds. Black Hills National Forest in the western side of the state covers an additional 1.2 million acres that spill over the border into Wyoming and hold the highest peak east of the Rockies. Nearby, Horsethief Lake is tucked into the surrounding ponderosa pines, yet only two miles away from the ultimate road trip stop, Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Those looking to pick up some speed can head north to Pactola Lake for a day of water skiing and a night of s’mores.

Strap on your backpack and hike the state’s 111-mile Centennial Trail, which provides a north to south taste of the Black Hills through prairie grasslands, dense forests, and high country terrain. Check with the different land management agencies along the way for specifics on where backcountry camping is allowed or where to find established campgrounds. Rather bike? The 109-mile George S. Mickelson Trail runs parallel to the Centennial Trail and is a rails-to-trails, car-free dream.

Begun in 1948 by sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski at the request of Oglala Lakota Chief, Henry Standing Bear, this memorial is more than a work of art. Stone State Park is an urban wildlife sanctuary on the edge of Sioux City and the heart of the Loess Hills. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) built many of the park’s structures in the 1930s including entrance portals, the Calumet shelter, and a rustic stone lodge. Visitors can explore the natural history of the park by walking its many of miles trails, looking for wildlife and birds, or at the nearby Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center.
Overnight in one of three camping cabins or at the park’s campground. Camping cabins contain heating and air conditioning, but do not offer sanitary facilities. The cabins are located near the campground, which contains electric sites, a large youth group campsite and a modern restroom and shower building. One-fourth of the campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis and advance reservations can be made through the online reservation system for Stone State Park.

Danish Alps offers Electric Plus, Electric, Basic and Equestrian Electric Plus campsites.

Danish Alps has 34 gravel pads with electrical hookups and two ADA cement pads with electrical hookups, as well as seven gravel pull-through pads with electrical hookups and one ADA cement pull-through pad with electrical hookups. Electrical campsites are both Electric Plus and Electric campsites. Additionally, Danish Alps offers an equestrian campground with 26 gravel pads that are Electric Plus and three ADA-accessible cement pads with electrical hookups. There are also 22 Basic camping sites. Campers have access to water, modern restrooms and showers.

Camping reservations are available for half of the electrical campsites. All other camping is all first-come, first-served campers register their nightly camping fees in a raised, locked box called an Iron Ranger. Self-service envelopes are provided at each Iron Ranger station. Check or cash only. Iron Rangers are generally located near the park entrance or in the campground area. On-site camping informational signs are provided to help guide campers with the self-registration process.

An equestrian campground offers 14 horse corrals, hitching posts and water. A scenic horse trail encircles most of the lake.

The Woodbury County Conservation Board is pleased to announce that Brown’s Lake-Bigelow Park near Salix, Iowa, will be reopening a portion of the campground on Wednesday, June 29th.  The campground has been redesigned with new concrete roads, larger campsites, and full hook-ups (electric, water and sewer) at each site.  Nineteen of the 29 sites will be opened initially, with the remaining sites to be opened as soon as conditions allow.  The new camping rates will be $30 per night.  Camping coupon books good for seven nights may be purchased for $180.  Previously purchased camping coupons will be honored.  All campsites are first-come, first-served and cannot be reserved in advance.

Ponca State Park offers Electric Plus, Electric and Basic camping. Turkey Ridge campground has 35 Electric Plus campsites that are first-come, first-served. Oak Bluff campground has 37 Electric Plus sites that reservable up to a year in advance. Riverfront Campground has 20 first-come, first-served campsites. Basic campsites are available for those that don’t need electricity. Basic campsites are first-come, first-served. Ponca State Park provides four group campsites perfect for scouting, or other group functions. Campgrounds include modern restrooms, showers, picnic tables, fire pits, nearby water spigots (not hookups), a dump and fill station and playground. Camping is available year-round; however modern facilities operate from April-October, weather permitting.

Camping reservations are available up to one year in advance of arrival in the electrical campsites of Oak Bluff campground. All other camping is first-come, first-served. Campers in first-come, first served sites can pay for their stay at one of the four black/metal iron ranges located in Turkey Ridge campground near the shower house, outside the Resource and Education Center, in the Riverfront campground near the restroom, or along the park roadway by the pop machines. Check or cash when paying at an iron ranger or debit/credit card payments can be made at the park office located inside the Resource and Education Center. Park maps and other detailed information are located on the bulletin boards in the campgrounds and outside the Resource and Education Center.
