Clay County Park — Clay County

      Secluded and peaceful

Clay County Park is located 4 miles outside of Vermillion South Dakota. It is secluded and peaceful. There were a few down falls. A lot of the sites were taken by either people who lived there full time or people who leave their camper there for the whole summer. Also the camp ground hosts weren’t friendly like all the other camp grounds we visit. But it was peaceful and pretty. The sites were very nice sized. You didn’t feel like you were right on top of each other. They are Electric only and there is drinking water and sewage dump close by. There was 2 nice restrooms and 1 vaulted toilet. There was a few trails, 1 leading to the Missouri River. Down the road (not far) is a nice shelter next to the river and a boat ramp.

Yankton - Missouri River KOA Journey

      Best campground in area

Nice park on the east side of Yankton. Would rate much higher except roads need more gravel and there are a few serious dips and bumps in the roads. Really nice staff, super clean restrooms, and nice patio sites for the reasonable rate.

Dog park, pool and other amenities are well maintained.

      On-Ur-Wa RV Park

      Nice stopover

This small campground is right off the interstate, easy to get to. It’s right by a small truck stop, but the noise was not bothersome at all. There is a small dog park for the pups. Bathrooms and showers are clean. One of our party is in a wheelchair and had no problem accessing the showers or bathroom. Hosts are very friendly. Sites are close, but for a one night stay that was just fine.

      Gunderson Park

Up to 14 days free camping

CAMPING IS NOW ONLY ALLOWED BETWEEN MEMORIAL DAY THROUGH LABOR DAY. NO WINTER CAMPING IS ALLOWED ANY LONGER.

Gunderson Park is a nice little boondocking location just ½ mile from the downtown area of Centerville. They have 2 fire pit locations, but, after speaking with the official at city hall we found out you can camp pretty much anywhere in the park you would like.

It is free to camp here, you can stay virtually as long as you wish to according to that same official. There are no hook-ups. No bathroom facilities. No picnic tables. No playground for children. You may fish with a South Dakota license in the lazy rolling Vermillion River that skirts the park on 3 sides. They have a cement boat ramp. I will say when we stayed there the river was so low you would have had great difficulties getting a boat launched. On the west side of the park there are park benches at the beginning (or end of the walk depending on your start location) with a cemented walk way along the road to the park and the Vermillion River. It runs close to a quarter mile long with benches about half way through the walk. The city keeps this park mowed during the summer months. This is an old old park dating back to 1800's. The trees are massive and just as old providing beautiful shade. There are remnants of old stone items remaing in the park, grape vine thingy, a stone fireplace and pillars. Our stay favored us with Bald Eagle sightings. 2 hung around the trees on the other side of the river in full view, it was wonderful.

At the city park you can dump your tanks. We didn't need to so we didn't visit this location. At the four way stop sign located at the center of the town, turn west, travel one block and on the south side of the street you will find city hall. There they will tell you how to find the dump site.

This seems to be a favorite location for locals to drive through. Sometimes we found traffic through the park on the heavy side but most of the time very quiet. People are small town friendly. Population is around 900 people. Town has a grocery store, convenience store, bank, medical clinic, pharmacy, restaurant, bowling alley, auto parts store, bakery and other businesses. We noticed 4 churches in our drive around the town. At the city park they have a community swimming pool, Frisbee golf, 2 ball diamonds, tennis courts, playground equipment, volleyball courts, 2 picnic house areas and a location for 4 RV campsites with electrical plug ins [2 50 amp and 2 30 amp) for $10.00 a night with limited stay.

      Neligh Park Campground

      Quiet camping in the city

Neligh Park campground features level concrete pads with gravel in front of each site. Every site includes a picnic table along with electric and water hookups. There is an on-site dump station that costs$2.00 if you are not staying at the park. Camping is $15 per night. Some sites are reservable online, while others can be paid for when you arrive.  The sites do not offer much shade as the trees planted around them are still small. The campground is in a quiet part of town.

The city park is adjacent to the campground. The city park has a newer, large playground, sand volleyball courts, and a walking trail that loops around the lake. There is also a community Aquatic Center on the premises that features a pool and a large water slide.

There appears to be a modern restroom building near the newer part of the park. There are a few fast food restaurants located a short drive away from the campground.

Oak Bluff Campground — Ponca State Park

Gorgeous Nebraska State Park, primitive site T45 review

I had the please of staying at this beautiful Nebraska state park with my youngest son on a return trip home from North Dakota over the July 4th weekend 2019. We pulled in after office ours and easily found several primitive walk up sites to choose from. We selected T45 for it’s proximity to a scenic Missouri River overlook and it’s flat, shaded ground. Ponca SP is a large clean and hilly state park offering just about everything you could want from Glamping in cabins to roughing it on one of several pack in trails. There is plentiful wildlife to observe. We witnessed deer and many species of birds in our one evening and morning stay. Guests to the park can partake in horse trail rides($), golf($), fishing, hunting, shooting/ archery range, biking/hiking, water activities such as kayaking or canoeing on the Missouri River, and a large pool near the entrance. Food service is also available on site if you get tired of cooking at your camp. If you want a power site for an RV I’d highly recommend reserving well in advance because this is a popular SP. For those of us who tent camp without power you’ll likely find the perfect spot for your small to large tent on a walk up site with plentiful shade trees at all of the sites that I observed. I highly recommend trying to get the site one spot to the North of T45, it literally looks right over the Missouri River and sits just steps away from the scenic overlook. The bathroom facility right by T45 was clean and well maintained and there was a water faucet next to this site as well as the trash bins. Scenic hikes, drives, or bike rides around the park are largely shaded with a rich tree canopy over rolling hills throughout the park. There are at least two scenic river overlooks with historical referenced to the area’s rich history including the Lewis and Clark expedition. Check the park’s web site at outdoornebraska.gov/Ponca/ to find out what educational and fun events might be happening at the park. They hold a Harvest/Halloween event over a few days in October each year, but you’ll have to book a site a year in advance if you want to for sure get a spot during that time. Don’t forget to stop in to the education center and learn all about the river’s history. The education center is top notch and one of our favorite things about the park. This is a five star state park by any measure and I can’t wait for a return trip to this park.

    Guide to North Sioux City

Camping options near North Sioux City span three states—South Dakota, Nebraska, and Iowa. The Missouri River creates natural boundaries between these states with elevations ranging from 1,100 to 1,320 feet. Summer temperatures frequently reach the high 80s to 90s, while winter camping often experiences below-freezing temperatures with occasional snow accumulation from November through March.

    What to do

Fishing access: Ponca State Park offers shoreline fishing along the Missouri River. "We stayed with our class A RV on our way to and from a further destination in early July. First spot was one right along the river. All the spots are spacious...neighbors are not on top of you," notes Chris S.

Disc golf: Elk Point City Park Campground includes a disc golf course within its boundaries. As Tracy M. describes, "Cute and historical city park that offers multiple 30 Amp hook up sites for $15. Water is available. Lots of play grounds, dog park, disc golf, and historic Lewis and Clark campsite."

Bird watching: Cottonwood Cove Park Campground attracts numerous bird species along the river. "This is a little municipal park with only 12 sites, water/electric/cable TV for $22/night. The campground buts up right against a pretty natural stretch of the west bank of the Missouri River," shares Marc G.

    What campers like

Quiet, spacious sites: Oak Bluff Campground gets high marks for its site layout. "Need to pay state park fee if you don't have an annual pass. Comfortable, inexpensive, pleasant surroundings, nice basic facilities," explains Mark H. Sandra W. adds, "Park is amazing with multiple trails and lots to do. Great activities for kids. Staff was friendly and very helpful."

River views: Scenic Park Campground delivers direct Missouri River access. "We found the Scenic Park RV Campground when we were looking for a spot to stay close to Sioux City, IA for a sports event for our sons. The view from our camper of the Missouri River and the Sioux City skyline was pretty great," says Pat V.

Year-round options: Several dog friendly campgrounds near North Sioux City remain open through winter. A camper at Turkey Ridge notes, "We paid $40.88, Park had dump station, pay showers ($1 for 6 minutes), and flush toilets. Restrooms were very clean. Elevation 1,320 ft."

    What you should know

Highway noise: Proximity to Interstate 29 affects some campgrounds. At Stone State Park Campground, Cameron W. reports, "Good enough. $11 for one night in a tent. Was a halfway point to my destination and a last minute thing. Has some cool trails, and the area is nice enough."

Trail conditions: Turkey Ridge trails vary seasonally. "We rode our bike around and got an incredible workout with lots of hills. Great views of the Missouri at the 3 state corners viewing area," explains Shari M.

Shared water access: Many campgrounds have central water spigots rather than individual hookups. "Site 2 had electric and water (shared spicket). We enjoyed this park. We could have saved money if we had purchased the State Park Pass," notes Annell N.

    Tips for camping with families

Budget-friendly parks: Dog friendly camping options near North Sioux City often cost under $15 per night. "This is a delightful campground in the city of Elk Point, SD. It is a city park with 50 amp hookups. You are surrounded by a football field, two baseball fields and a nice children's playground," shares Jeff H.

Educational centers: Riverfront Campground offers learning opportunities. "This park is definitely a must see for all types of campers. There is a visitors center that has a little bit of the history of the area as well as education of the Missouri river," says Tony B.

Playground proximity: Consider site location relative to play areas. "We were in a tree cave with very little sunlight. We rode our bike around and got an incredible workout with lots of hills," notes a Turkey Ridge camper.

    Tips from RVers

Dump station access: Not all campgrounds have on-site dump stations. "Be aware that there is no dump station here. There's a small bath house that's presently closed for COVID-19 precautions," reports Marc G. about Cottonwood Cove Park.

Site sizes: Oak Bluff sites can be limiting for larger rigs. "Oak Bluff Campground is okay and has level sites. Tight squeeze for larger campers, not all sites are 50 amp and sites are smaller than most state parks," advises Sandra W.

Limited cell service: Coverage varies throughout the region. A camper at Stone State Park warns, "There was sketchy coverage for your phone so I couldn't pull up Alltrails, make sure to download before You drive in."
