  Yellow Creek Campground — Yellow Creek State Park

  Beautiful. Great for families staying together.

  We stayed in 3 of the cabins for 4 days at Yellow Creek State Park (not the campground). It was beautiful. Right on the water, clean, and private access to the lake. Dog friendly cabins were available. We cannot wait to come back.

  Lots of family fun.

  We have stayed in the camping cabins here multiple times. We love the animals and activities for the kids. Fall is the best at this campground with the trick or treating and haunted house.

  Top 5 Campground in PA

  This campground is located on the east side of Pennsylvania and offers a beautiful view of Lake Raystown. The campground has over 200 sites to choose from, and many of them are right on the water. There are also plenty of activities to keep you busy, including swimming, fishing, kayaking, and canoeing and my favorite thing to do Mt Biking. Raystown lake is also a really nice boating lake. The lake is a natural beauty with so many coves and inlets for the biggest of boats to enjoy. They do have a camping resort on the other side of the lake which makes it nice for anyone looking for rustic cabins or cabin rentals. 

   There are 50 miles of single track mountain biking at this campground. They are some of the best flow trails on the East coast and are the# 1 trail system in Pennsylvania. This is a family friendly campground and has so much to offer. There are volleyball nets, playgrounds, kayak and paddleboard rentals. The kids took a kayak over to an island and spent the afternoon cliff jumping with a 10 ft and 25 ft cliff to launch off of. The sites here are some of the nicest we have ever seen. They are all big and private with stunning views of Raystown Lake. There are steps down from your camper to a pad with a fire pit and area for a tent. You are literally 10 feet away from the water as you enjoy a sunset while sitting around the fire. The lake is a great place to kayak, paddleboard, or just relax and enjoy the view. We love coming here and spending our weekends on the lake.   Camp Cacapon

  Nice relaxing camping experience

  This is a very nice converted single family residence turned into a tent and cabin camping area with one RV spot. The RV spot overlooks the camping area and has full hookups. Campground is located on 8 acres with excellent upkeep and grounds maintenance. The site is obviously a labor of love for the owner. It has nice water access to a creek that is wide and inviting. Mixes tall trees with well manicured grass areas. Check out the abundant chainsaw art. It’s a bit out of the way, but road access is good for all but large rigs. All in all, we had a very laid back enjoyable stay. Would recommend to a camper looking for something different.

  Laurel Hill State Park Campground

  Huge state park

  We booked this state park last minute to go away for memorial day weekend. We were not sure what to expect but were pleasantly Surprise. It's a beautiful park with hundreds of campsites and amazing lake and huge swimming beach area bike rentals boat rentals hiking trails and you can even see some very Old groupcamping cabins. They even have some very adorable cottages for rent.

  New Germany State Park Campground

  Small Park, Big Personality

  I stay in MD State Parks many nights a year, and I probably have the most nights spent in New Germany. It feels like another world. Towering ancient hemlocks, a lake, historic buildings, and miles of meticulously maintained trails. In the summer come to hike, fish, and swim in the lake. Winter offers snowshoeing and cross country skiing (rentals on site). There is even a huge round fireplace to warm yourself up in the lodge. Camp sites are small, and the road is tight, but they aren’t packed in close together. No hookups, but bathrooms are adequate and clean. If you are a cabin person the selection here is incredible. The historic cabins are the star of the show. Also, come for zero cell service (there is a pay phone!). Do not skip over this park for your next adventure.

  Rocky Gap State Park Campground

  Always a great time!

  This place is awesome! Our site (15) was a spacious pull through with great view of the mountain through the fall foliage! Our friends were in the site next to us (17) which was also nice and there was a wide walking path between them. Family also stayed in one of the rental cabins (21). Sites are spaced far apart in the section we were in with lots of foliage for privacy. There is walking path behind the loop along the lake that goes to the beach area and camp store. Easy access to the bath house with several paths off the loop. I recommend the pull through sites for their size and privacy but most sites looked great. The cabin was cute. It had a queen bed, bunk beds, side table and front porch with a couple windows. Picnic tables are large and fire pits were placed perfectly for our site.

  Friendship Village Campground & RV Park

  Great weekend getaway

  My family camps here most weekends in the summer. It's close to our house and easily accessible. The campground itself is really nice. They've done a lot of improvements over the years which have paid off. Nice camp stores, two swimming pools, mini golf, and a catch-and-release fishing lake. The sites are close together, but for a weekend getaway it isn't unbearable. They have fun holiday events, like the Halloween trick or treat, and they provide a shuttle for Bedford's annual Fall Foliage festival, which is a bonus. All-in-all, it's a really nice family campground.

  Kooser State Park Campground — Kooser State Park

  Green rolling hills

  We met with friends from Pittsburgh here, they visit often and consider this a hidden gem. We enjoyed the waterfront camping and snowshoeing. We got a site by the water and with good tree cover. They also have cabins but we were just in a tent (I don’t know if the cabins are open all year). Great place to camp for simple beauty.

  Huge state park

  General: 300+ site campground with a mix of FHU, 30 and 50-amp electric, and non-electric tent sites, yurts, and cabins. Select loops allow pets but not all do. 

  Site Quality: Varies by type and location within the park. I heeded the advice of other reviewers warning that many sites were not level and did not reserve ahead of time. A Monday in mid-October had many open sites. Most of the non-electric sites were decidedly not level but many of the FHU and electric sites were fairly level, and we did not have a problem finding one. Some sites have gravel pads that were level and vary in length from 20’ to 115’ Most of the non-electric sites had no definable pads at all and as mentioned, were not level. Some roads in the campground were paved but a few were not. 

  Bath/Shower House: was clean. Did not use the shower. 

  Activities: A somewhat dated playground was located in the A Loop. A lake and beach are a short distance from the campground. We did see a boat launch and what appeared to be kayak rentals, but we were there out of season. 

  As remote as the campground feels, there was a surprising amount of road noise. This was just an overnight stay for us. We’ve been to many stellar Pennsylvania state park campgrounds, but this one was not as good as many others.

  Mirror Lake RV Camping & Fishing

  Wonderful weekend getaway

  My family stayed in one of the cabins while friends were in their campers. The cabin was great, very clean and cozy. The campgrounds are very nice they have a pool as well as a community building and camp store. We had 8 kids and 8 adults who all had a blast playing on the playground, floating down the creek, swimming in the pool, riding bicycles etc. All in all we will definitely be returning

  Lake Raystown Resort

  More resort than campground but it may be your thing

  I prefer the campground just up the road but I have stayed here at the resort in cabin.

  Nice waterfront at the lower edge of the resort. The cabins were set up above and kind of overlooked down to Raystown lake. You can hear the power boats zipping up and down the lake but it wasn’t annoying.

  many roads to explore and a great little restaurant inside the resort if you need tI eat. We had breakfast there and it acceptable.

  Canoe Creek State Park Campground

  Nice Cabins

  This park is a little different and has some fairly interesting history. There are some old ruins as well as an old quarry site. The grounds are open to hunting and we were surprised by a bird hunter and his dog who was running around off leash, creating a little havoc for us while walking our two dogs on the trail. If you visit in the fall, be sure to bring some hunter orange if you plan on exploring the trails.

  Now onto the cabins- these are quite nice! They have nice bathrooms with hot showers, a common area with a lot of furniture, a kitchen with large table and full sized appliances. The cabin we stayed in was pet friendly and had two rooms, one with a full size bed and a second one with 2 sets of bunk beds. The heat was quite efficient and kept us warm on some cold nights. 

  These cabins are not equipped with any type of consumables, cookware or linens. You really need to bring everything if you're planning on actually using the bathroom or kitchen. There is toilet paper though :) We chose to stay here due to its proximity to several National Park sites in the area and it was perfect for us! We will be visiting another state park with similar cabins next year, too!

  Laurel Hill State Park Campground

  Very large and wooded state park

  General: Large campground in four loops with a variety of sites ranging from tent-only, 30-amp electric, 50-amp electric, and 30/50-amp electric, along with eight camper cabins. 

  Site Quality: All sites are gravel; most appeared level, but some did not. All sites are wooded but some have more separation than others. Our site backed up to the creek but surprisingly, there was not a lot of water flowing in the spring, 

  Bath/Shower house: Basic and dated, but reasonably clean. Did not use the shower.

  Activities/Amenities: Many include fishing, swimming, boating, bicycling, hiking, geocaching, and hunting. The lake is separate from the campground, but it is less than a mile away and a reasonable distance walk. There is also a playground, volleyball, shuffleboard, and a large picnic area at the end of one of the loops. Bike and boat rentals are available in the summer season; the season was set to open the day after we left so aside from hiking, we could not avail ourselves of any of the activities (and my husband had a foot injury so even hiking was out for us). There are also laundry facilities, but I did not check these out. 

  We were surprised that just a few days before Memorial Day, only a handful of sites were occupied. We’ve been very impressed by the pristine conditions of many Pennsylvania state parks, but this one had a more rustic feel and had not been modernized. Fleeting cell at best on Verizon.

  Canoe Creek State Park Campground

  Interesting park with easy hiking

  We stayed at one of the cabins before COVID-19 hit PA and shut down all the parks. The main part of the park has a nice little lake and we saw herons during our visit. At night there was fairly decent stargazing despite its proximity to Altoona's light pollution. 

  There's an easy disc golf course, which was a nice little amenity. 

  Several interesting hiking trails and the often-photographed limestone kilns are cool to see.

  The cabin itself was overall very nice, but the bathroom was surprisingly run down. 

  I would imagine this is a very nice park in the summer, greener months.

  Kooser State Park Campground — Kooser State Park

  Convenient & Comfortable

  Nice little park& campground. Very Clean, cozy and quiet, except for the road noise. Right off Route 31, minutes from I-76 makes it a very convenient place to stop along your travels. Bathrooms are clean, grounds very well kept. The park area is lovely, but the lake is currently very low. Trout stocked but I wouldn’t count on fishing here right now. Short walking trail along a creek. Very lovely cabins and cabin areas and tent sites. RV sites are small but adequate and most are pull though. Honestly some of the best attention and details we’ve seen at a state park. We would stay again.  We stayed at site 12E and site 1E.  Be aware that site 1E is not very level on pull through gravel surface.

  Linn Run State Park Cabins — Linn Run State Park

  Lovely rustic cabins by a crick

  My family has been camping here for generations. There are charming rustic cabins, toilets and showers nearby. Outdoor spigots for water. They’re all right next to a shady crick, near a sliding rock, and some nice hikes. Great spot for kids.

  Small but fun

  Kooser State Park sits on the border of Forbes State Forest in the Laurel Highlands. It has a mix of camper & tent sites around a central clearing, and offers a few cabins. There is a central bathroom with showers, flush toilets and a sink to wash your dishes.

  Rvino - Ridge Rider Campground, LLC

  Convenient to Biking

  We had a nice, spacious site with inconsiderate neighbors. The website says quiet hours are enforced but sadly there was no one to enforce them. There was one bathhouse that was fairly clean. They offer many seasonal sites and cabins. The best part was the convenience to the Western MD Rail Trail and the C&O Canal.

  Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park in Hagerstown MD

  Really nice wooded campground with waterpark.

  This campground has tons of nice cabins and tent sites, all in wooded surroundings. There is a small creek to play in and a nice little hiking trail within the campground. Has a great water park, playground and bounce pad feature. Definitely recommend for families and /or anyone looking for easy convenience camping.

  Great cabins!

  We come here every year for a family reunion and always rent one of the cabins. We love coming here. The park is huge and there are lots of things to do. You can go to the beach, kayak, hike, or go outside the park to explore some caves or a bat church. We will continue to come here every year!

  Rocky Gap State Park Campground

  Great for families

  This park is a lot of fun in warm weather with kids. The facilities are also top-notch. I couldn't get over how nice the bathrooms were! We rented mini cabins which each have electricity but no bathroom or running water. Ours had a futon, folding table, double bed and bunk beds. The office will lend you a box fan at check-in and the cabins do get stuffy.

  The swimming beach and playground are absolutely beautiful! We had a great time at the nature center reptile feeding program. We also walked around the aviary, where you can see many of the birds from the outside even if it isn't open for a program. We hiked the loop around the lake, not realizing that it was over 5 miles! It also takes you right through the casino parking lot and crowded day use area at one point. If there's a drawback to this park, it's that it really doesn't feel very remote. You're basically across the lake from a big hotel and casino. But it's convenient to DC and a great place for kids and new campers!

  Shawnee State Park Campground

  Met our Needs Perfectly

  Booked for 5 nights to have an opportunity to explore the Bedford, PA area. Great access to Flight 93 Memorial, local covered bridges, Fort Bedford Historic Fort, and many other attractions. Loop D was quiet with ample space between sites that provided privacy. Bathhouse was clean and used for showers. Dump and water fill station easy to access on your way in or out. Verizon signal good enough for streaming.

  Cowans Gap State Park Campground

  Ranger Review Mishmi Takin Hiking Boots; Almost nowhere

  Campground Review: Cowans Gap State Park was pretty awesome. Off the Pennsylvania Turnpike at Fort Littleton, through Burnt Cabin on Rt522, signage the entire way. A drive through the PA mountain-scape, excellent scenery to be seen.

  The dog section is 1-30 and a few cabins are offered for them also. No restrictions for dogs on the trails but they are restricted from the rest of the campground.

  Several trails to enjoy with easy to very strenuous climbs. Part of the Allegheny trail passes through the Buchanan State Forest, near the campground. Would be a good place to practice your backpacking craft.

  New showerhouse facilities which are energy efficient lighting and heating. The water in the shower never gets very warm but they are very clean and well maintained.

  There is plenty of water sports at the lake, watercraft, swimming and fishing.

  Product Review: As a Dyrt Ranger I have the opportunity to review some pretty awesome outdoor gear. I received Mishmi Takin hiking boots after winning one of the monthly contests.

  I love the color, I’m all about burnt orange. I have large feet and was happy to see that the company offers footwear up to 13.5 in. I ordered an 11, was surprised when they arrived and were a little big on my feet. So you may want to order a 1/2 size down. On the flip side though I put on my thick hiking socks, synched the laces down and they fit fine.

  I wore the boots multiple times during our 8 state trip on several different trail types. I was impressed by grip, no slippage on multiple surfaces.

  I hate to say it but I have sweaty feet! And wearing thick hiking socks in boots often leaves me with raisinie toes and damp socks/boots at the end of a long hike. I did not experience that problem while wearing the Mishmi Boots though. My feet stayed comfortable and were dry when I pulled the boots off back at camp. I am liking these boots!

  Middle Ridge Campground

  Family - peaceful - beautiful - fun

  An awesome go to campground for the family. We've been going for years. Everyone loves it - there is something for everyone from hiking, swimming, outdoor games,  fishing, watching the donkeys or just enjoying the fire pit in the evenings. The views are spectacular! PS They have sites for your trailer, tent and even a cabin to rent. The bathhouse is clean too (a big plus)...
