While some campgrounds operate year-round, water and certain facilities may be unavailable during winter months. Grand Lake St. Marys State Park Campground

      Convenient with all amenities

Stopped for the night while passing through Ohio. Conveniently off the main hwy. The staff at the office were super helpful and friendly and the office was open until 7 on the Sunday we can by. Most sites where we were (#203) were pull through a on concrete. There’s a pool also - although we didn’t have time to check it out. The dump station provides the “stinky slinky” so you don’t have to use yours 🙃 Nice big lake for boats and fishing.

The area sits at approximately 1,050 feet above sea level in Ohio's western plains region. Most campgrounds in this area feature relatively flat terrain with some remaining standing water after heavy rainfall, requiring careful site selection during wet seasons.

    What to Do

Fishing opportunities: Indian Lake State Park Campground offers excellent fishing with well-stocked waters. "We really enjoy Kiser Lake, although there is only one spot for camping that we prefer... we had a great time kayaking there. The lake was calm and everyone was very respectful of us in our kayaks," notes one visitor to Kiser Lake State Park Campground.

Swimming options: Beyond natural water bodies, some campgrounds offer pool facilities. At Grand Lake St. Marys State Park, "the camping spot was great. It was very close to the pool and playground. The sites were pull through which was nice for having young kids."

Recreation facilities: Many campgrounds provide additional activities beyond water recreation. One camper at Poor Farmer's Campground noted, "A stream that runs through the campground is nice for the kids to play in when it's too hot for them on the play ground. They usually have a lot of activities for the weekends planned."

    What Campers Like

Spacious sites: Site size varies significantly between campgrounds. At Back 40 Campground, "the sites are large. Most have water and electricity. Nice amenities like a clubhouse with pool tables, clean flush toilets and shower areas, a nice small lake for swimming."

On-site conveniences: Campground stores and amenities make camping more comfortable. One camper at Wapakoneta KOA noted, "The grounds are beautiful and the staff is super friendly and helpful! Oh and in the laundry room they even have a sink for washing dishes! Great for tent campers or those with small units that don't have kitchens."

Evening quiet: Many campgrounds enforce quiet hours. "The gates lock at 10pm," notes a visitor to Back 40 Campground, creating a peaceful overnight experience. Another camper commented about Poor Farmer's Campground: "Clean family oriented and spacious. Well run facility with good restrooms and showers plus electric hook up per site. Out in farm country so very little light pollution overall."

    What You Should Know

Seasonal considerations: Many campgrounds have limited operations during winter months. At Wapakoneta KOA, the season runs from mid-March through October, while some state parks maintain year-round accessibility with reduced services.

Bathroom facilities: Quality varies significantly between locations. One camper at Lake Loramie State Park Campground reported, "The bathrooms were extremely dirty. It looks like they haven't been renovated since the 80s."

Reservation needs: Popular campgrounds fill quickly, especially on weekends. "We stayed on a Sunday night so it wasn't packed. There are a ton of sites," noted one visitor to Indian Lake State Park about weekday availability.

Environmental factors: Weather and insects can impact your stay. A camper at Lake Loramie shared: "I think for us this park might be better in the fall. The bugs were really bad every time we were outside. There are several nice walking trails but the mosquitoes were so bad even in the day that we kept away."

    Tips for Camping with Families

Look for kid-friendly amenities: Some campgrounds specifically cater to families. At Indian Lake State Park Campground, "This is definitely a campground for families and for those who want lots of company in their experience... Lots of activities for kids and families and even movies and music on the weekend."

Consider privacy needs: Site layouts impact family comfort. "We have been camping at Indian lake since I was a child, now we bring our kids there. Roomy sites, plenty of shade. Not a lot of privacy. There is a sand beach for swimming (even a separate doggy beach!) or a new in-ground pool."

Check for organized activities: Some campgrounds host special events. At Back 40 Campground, "For Fathers Day weekend they even set up a huge slip n slide down a hill with foam everywhere!! It was a BLAST!"

    Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: Pay attention to campground topography. "Our pad was not level front to back so we had to adjust a little bit," reported one RVer at Indian Lake State Park.

Hookup availability: Confirm utility options before booking. "Would be more convenient if all sites had full hookups," noted one camper at Indian Lake, while another mentioned, "We do like the B section and try to stay there when we can."

Nearby services: Some campgrounds offer convenient access to supplies. A visitor to Wapakoneta KOA shared: "Great place to stop and recover from the road! Close to I75, level sites, laundry, showers, two dog areas and a store and restaurant."
