Kiser Lake State Park Campground and Buck Creek State Park Campground near Jackson Center, Ohio provide limited options for camping with horses. While both campgrounds offer standard tent, RV, and cabin camping options, neither features dedicated horse corrals or specialized equestrian facilities based on the available information. Kiser Lake's camping area consists of 20 electric sites and 56 primitive sites spread across an open grassy area with some waterfront options. The primitive sites along the perimeter offer more tree coverage and privacy compared to the central camping field.

The trails at these parks accommodate casual hiking but have limited designated bridle paths for horseback riding. Buck Creek State Park offers more extensive trail networks that connect to the reservoir, providing access points for riders seeking water for their horses. Trail conditions vary seasonally, with some downed trees reported on poorly marked paths at Kiser Lake. Campers should note that some trails at Kiser Lake intersect with a nature preserve where pets are not permitted, which may affect horse access. Both parks maintain year-round operations, though Buck Creek offers more amenities including shower facilities and a wider range of recreational options for visitors traveling with horses and families.

      Buck Creek State Park Campground

      Great quiet site

A well manicured campground just outside Dayton, easy to get to, back in pavement site with 30A electric, picnic table and fire pit. Plenty of potable water spigots around, just not at the site. Dump station near the entrance of the campground. Walking trails along the lake well cared for. Plenty of activity with playground and an outdoor theater. Plenty of water-front pebble beach for enjoyment in the summer. Close to the campground is the marina with a restaurant , but won’t open til Memorial Day.

Addendum: July 2021 - was speaking with a number of people who have been here and they suggest not going during the summer. There is a large influx of rowdy locals who don't quite respect the peace and quiet many of us like.

Good place to spend the night

This was another brief stop on my long journey back west. The state park is beautiful and the sites are pretty nice. I did not spend enough time here to give a thorough review, but what I will say is that this site is nice if you need a campsite for a couple nights while passing through Ohio. Seems there are a lot of good options for water fun at this site!

      Great 4th of July weekend!!

Had a 4 day 3 night long weekend. Camp host on I think lot 71 or there about were great at keeping the activities going. Every night there was a movie and you could buy root beer floats for $1!! And the kids loved it. We also used the camper beach but to the left of it to launch our kayaks. Which was nice because you could back up to the pathway and park. Then drag your kayak down a short trail to the water. We loved our campsite 41 which I found is next to impossible to get! But it has shade almost all day and it only has a camper on one side plus is close to the bathroom. There is a path to the playground which the occasional kid will run down into your campsite by accident. Also the campground was quiet by 10pm every night we were there and most people seemed to be in bed early. We stay up till like 1-2am every night and it was so peaceful.

      Good for a summer night

After not being able to camp a majority of the summer due to having 2 brain surgeries - it was nice to at least get one camping trip in before the kids start back school. It was definitely not an easy task to get a camp site here as a walk-in. We checked on reserve America several times with no luck. So finally when Friday (8/9) morning came I rushed up to buck creek to get a spot. The camp store opened a little after the posted time. I politely asked the attendant if they had any walk-up sites available and at first she said no. I then said you don’t have anything at all? She finally said they had a few non-electric sites (which was totally fine!) I happily paid for the site and we sat up. The park was totally FULL by evening. The attendant at the store wasn’t the friendliest. It was slightly upsetting she tried to hide that they had a few non-electrics available. We also witnessed her telling children/teens they couldn’t come into the camp store without an adult. And, there was a stray, very scrawny looking cat that hung around the camp store that some people were giving food. The attendant came out of the store and yelled at the kids for feeding it - instead of explaining why they shouldn’t. The camp store is very basic it has wood, ice, lighters, and things of that nature. The camp sites can feel a bit cramped (especially when they’re full) they’re about 15ft from one cement pad to the next. The restrooms were okay and by Saturday evening desperately needed cleaned. Also in the main woman’s restroom only one out of three stall doors actually locked. The showers were warm though so that is a positive especially when camping. The camp doesn’t do very many planned activities. They have a movie at dark which our kiddos enjoyed. They have a basketball court which is usually full of teens. The playground is nice and within walking distance from all the campsites. However our 6 year old was a bit disappointed that the tetherball didn’t have a ball. Buck Creek has a lot of great trails to hike. It is very common to see wildlife especially deer on a hike here. The kids love it and it’s always fun to look for big foot on hikes for them.

      Lots of things to do!

We camped here in our camper in early July 2017. There are a lot of things to do in the area. We visited the Ohio Caverns. The tour is worth the money, the "gem" mining was fun for our younger kids. There are two swimming beaches, the public one and one in the campground. The campground one is smaller a short hike to get to it. Both are ok, but nothing impressive. The campground is clean and overall a good value. It was a busy weekend but not as loud as I figured it would be. Yellow Springs is a great, funky town. Many great places to eat. Dark Star Used Bookstore is a must see every time we visit.

      Electric this time around...

We booked a last minute 4th of July weekend and found site 48 available. It had a pretty level pad, lots of green space and a tree for shade. We were across from the basketball court but it sat way in the back near the trees that it wasn’t anything that bothered us. We were almost on the end of the road and not a far walk to the camp store and bathrooms (flushable toilets and decent showers). Next to the camp store is the large playground and the amphitheater where they show movies. Just 10 minutes away is a gas station with a big selection of alcohol, cheaper wood and ice. Great site for a last minute decision.

      Kiser Lake State Park Campground

Beautiful lake, no running water, feral cats

This park has a beautiful lake and nice (although short) hiking trails. The problem is that there is no running water- no showers and smelly pit toilets. There is one spigot for drinking water.

Beware that the campsites are mostly in one big grassy field with no shade. I'd pick a site along the perimeter or along the lake.

This park is overrun with feral cats (or it was when I was there). Some people might think that is cute. I consider feral cats to be wild animals that carry disease. What's really bad about them is that they've been fed so they are comfortable around people. We spent the whole weekend trying to fend them off- every time our backs were turned, they jumped up on our picnic table. They ate our food, which we had to throw away. When we sat by the fire, they rubbed up against our legs, which is disgusting, considering they carry Bartonella, which is transmitted through their fleas and ticks (Bartonella is a co-infection of Lyme, or you can get it on its own. I know- I've had it since middle school. Feral cats probably carry Lyme too, as they are mammals). I can't express how stressful it was, trying to keep these wild cats away from us the entire weekend. I don't know why the park can't get them under control.

Sure, cat people will be offended by my statement, but would you want raccoons or skunks up on your table, eating out of your pots and pans? Would you want raccoons rubbing up against you while you are trying to relax? These cats are also wild animals, yet way too tame for comfort. Ugh,I shudder remembering it.

    Guide to Jackson Center

Campsites near Jackson Center, Ohio offer options for outdoor enthusiasts on horseback, though specialized equestrian facilities are limited. The area features several state parks within driving distance, each with distinct trail systems set among the rolling terrain of west-central Ohio. Camping options range from primitive sites to those with electric hookups, with varying degrees of privacy and amenities.

    What to do

Kayaking on motor-free waters: Kiser Lake State Park provides a calm paddling experience with no motorized boats allowed. "We had a great time kayaking there. The lake was calm and everyone was very respectful of us in our kayaks," notes Mandi B. about Kiser Lake State Park Campground.

Explore hiking trails: Buck Creek offers multiple trail networks connecting to the reservoir. "The park is great for hunting and has a few good spots to fish. The hiking trails are often over grown and not very challenging," explains Ashten J. about Sycamore State Park Campground.

Seasonal activities: Campgrounds in the region often host weekend events, especially during holidays. "Camp host on I think lot 71 or there about were great at keeping the activities going. Every night there was a movie and you could buy root beer floats for $1," shares Melissa M. from her experience at Buck Creek State Park.

    What campers like

Lake access from campsites: Many campers appreciate waterfront sites that allow easy access for fishing and water activities. "We camped on lot 57 and the view of the lake was awesome," says Brad H. about his stay at Kiser Lake.

Wooded perimeter sites: For those seeking more privacy when horseback camping near Jackson Center, Ohio, the edges of campgrounds often provide better coverage. "I'd pick a site along the perimeter or along the lake," recommends Mandi B. about sites at Buck Creek State Park Campground.

Natural beauty: The parks offer scenic surroundings that change with the seasons. "It was absolutely stunning over looking the water with the trees turning colors," Alexandra F. shares about her October visit to Kiser Lake. "I went the first weekend in October so they had a lot of families there because they had all sorts of Halloween activities going on."

    What you should know

Trail conditions vary: Horseback riders should check trail status before visits. "We did notice lots of downed trees on the poorly marked hiking trails. Some trails just started but no maps were around and no trails were blazed," reports Andrea F. from Sycamore State Park Campground.

Water and bathroom facilities: Amenities vary significantly between parks. "The campground has no full hookups but does have electric. There is a new shower house that's pretty nice, but the other bathrooms are pretty nasty," notes Aaliya B. about Kiser Lake facilities.

Site layout considerations: Campgrounds often have mixed coverage. "Beware that the campsites are mostly in one big grassy field with no shade," warns Megan M. about certain areas at Kiser Lake. Playground access: Select sites near recreational areas if traveling with children. "Beach, volleyball net, playground. Plenty of water locations," continues Andrew L. about family-friendly amenities at Kiser Lake.

Biking opportunities: Several campgrounds offer space for children to ride. "My sons love camping here for the trails and large areas to ride their bikes," notes Buck B. about Buck Creek State Park, making it suitable for families combining horseback riding with other activities.

    Tips from RVers

Electric site selection: RV campers should consider specific site locations for views and convenience. "The RV sites have a view of the lake. Sites are clean and paved," explains Aaliya B. about Buck Creek State Park Campground.

Level camping spots: Buck Creek offers favorable terrain for larger vehicles. "Our space was nice and level," confirms Lisa M. about her RV site at Buck Creek. "Nice hiking trails in the area. Showers were very nice and clean."
