Best in ND

Great spot for hiking, biking, canoeing and riding your horse. Friendly staff and clean sites. No water or sewer hookups.

Very nice county park/campground

This park had a surprising amount of space and amenities for a county park.  I *think* there were around 40 campsites.  Don't miss the back, more private section.  We camped overnight here while en-route to Theodore Roosevelt N.P. from Minneapolis airport.  It is on the Shyanne River National…

Unique Oak Haven

My first and not going to be the last campout here. Beautiful sites, trails, very friendly and knowledgeable ranger. Took our 40' through the 1212 trail and was quite concerned I had gotten a little bold with following an unknown gps destination. It worked out but was very close as was also pulling a…

Small town park

4 grass spots with 30 amp electric picnic table and trash cans. Dump station at the pay box but no water. Found a business that let us fill our tanks. Bathroom across from the sites. Quiet park very nicely kept. Laundry mat across the street. Would stay here again.

Very quiet, well off the beaten path

We spent a night there in the fall.  It is well off the main road but the dirt road is passable with any rig.  The sites are varied, well kept and some will fit larger rigs.  It is typical forest service dry camping.  There is a hiking trail that circles this small grassland about 5 or 6 miles…

Dispersed camping

Oldest son and I hiked into the east side of the Sheyenne Grasslands on the NCT. We had parked at the Ekre trailhead, deciding to hike past the Ekre campsite. We set up our tent as soon as we got into the boundaries as a thunder and lightening storm began. The next morning we hiked the 3 miles…

Need to return

Nice campground, we camped near the brook. Got there later in the evening and left early in the morning to start a hiking trip. Unfortunately we didnt get to enjoy all that the park has to offer, but the staff was friendly and let us park our vehicle there for the weekend while we completed our…

Lovely River

This campground has the North Country Trail go right through it, and that is how we ended up camping there. Kids enjoyed the ice cream and refreshments for sale at the gift shop. We were able to get down to the river from our primitive site and cool off. While the bank its self was quite steep…

Beautiful Place

The tall grass prairie here is absolutely beautiful, and a rare place to be able to enjoy. There are two established campgrounds here, but dispersed camping is allowed anywhere on the property (with restrictions). It’s a very different kind of camping than I was used to in forests back east. It’s…

Hiking trails and river for canoeing/kayaking/fishing

Stayed at a site in the open field near to the road.  (last site available) only down side was that you got to feel the ND winds (10-30mph+) all the time.....   Next time will stay on the other side of the river at their "primitive" campsites.  those sites are all in the trees and secluded.  Also…

  • one of the many easy trails around the park. Rolling hills, valley and ridge walks.

Nice experience by the Sheyenne River and Grasslands

This is a year round multi-use state park along the forest-lined Sheyenne River and near the Sheyenne National Grasslands. There are miles of trails through all kinds of habititats from forest to prairie to riparian shores and the water trail. In winter there is great cross country skiing and…

Quiet, almost

Showed up on a Thursday night, and I am the sole camper in the entire place. Nicely set up, and seems well cared for. Only problem: there are cows everywhere. You go though cow pastures to get to the campground and they are just sitting at the fence line mooing. Hopefully they shut up soon so I can…

Returned for a hike

Returned here just for a hike not to camp this time, we love it so much! Only saw 1 other group on the trail, did 5 miles out to Mirror pond, enjoyed lunch there and did the 5 miles back. Great activity for a sunny but chilly April Sunday!

Beautiful area for dispersed camping

We dispersed camped for 1 night while walking along the North Country trail. It is a quiet and safe, we parked at the trail head and intended to hike to mirror lake but didn't make it in that far and found a nice place to stop along the way.

There are cows around the prairie which leads to cattle…

This is a pretty good spot. When we were there in June the campground was having a Halloween celebration and my daughter loved it. There’s good trails to walk and it’s generally quiet. Sites aren’t very private, but the people were nice. It seemed to be more of a “locals” campground.
