Great Inexpensive Campground

This campground is only about 1/4 mile from the entrance to the North Unit of Theodore Rosevelt National Park. There are plenty of pit toilets, potable water, and electric. The views from the park are amazing! Sites are big and each has a picnic table, fire pit, and grill. The road in (1 mile) is well maintained. Highly recommend!!

Looks brand new!

Easy 1 mile drive on well maintained gravel/dirt road off Highway 85. The campground appears to have been recently renovated. The fire pit and barbecue have never been used. The roads and campsites have all new gravel. I would definitely recommend this campground to anyone visiting Theodore Roosevelt NP. The north entrance is approximately 2 miles north of this campground. Very beautiful location.

Beautiful views and access to a great trail from the campsite

It was an awesome campground. The views from the campsite were beautiful and there’s an access to the Maah Daah Hey trail from the campground. There’s no shade so it can get hot and you can see every other campsite but it’s still really awesome!

Very quiet and beautiful!

The campsite was mostly empty so we got to choose pretty much any campsite! Very close to TRNP with just as good of views! The weather was nice but very very hot!

Awesome views

This place is very well kept. Vault toilets and hand pump for water. The views are just awesome. 360 deg. Large sites spaced far apart. 40 plus sites. Host said never full. $10 a night. No road noise. Lots of wildlife. Deer and prairie dogs.

Best Kept Secret In North Dakota

I loved this place. I wanted a quiet, uncrowded campground to spend the 4th of July weekend. I got more than I bargained for. This beautiful place with sweeping 360 degree views was virtually empty. There was a campground host and one other RV in the entire campground. There were a few tents on 7/2, but they left. The sites are well spaced. There are vault toilets that would be barely adequate if the place where full. Potable water is available only by hand-pumping….not so great if you are trying to fill you fresh water tank. There is no sanitary dump on the property. These detractions are the reason it is not a 5.

The campground is the beginning/end of the 144 mile Maah Daah Hey trail. I hiked sections of this trail two days in a row and it was completely delightful. The trail and campsite are on the south side of the Little Missouri River and the visitor center for the national park and the Juniper campground are on the north side. Caution: the river marks the dividing line between Central and Mountain time zones. The weather around here can be dramatic. There were two intense thunder storms the last two nights.

Amazing Views

We stayed here for two nights and loved the views we had. I and made a reservation but there was no where to check in so it seemed as if anyone could camp here whenever. It wasn’t busy at all and was very quiet. It has a trail that leads you all the way up on of the foothills and further into the national park! We saw cattle on the path and it was very clean. The bathrooms were pretty nice. Definitely bring some bug spray to this site. The nearest gas station is about 25 mins away, so plan ahead for buying water and firewood.

Amazing Views

The campground is across the LittleMo river and has amazing views. Direct access to the Maah Daah Hey trail for hiking riding or biking. A great hike amid the cattle. 3 loops to camp, livestock accessible, but no electric and a pump for water. A variety of back In and pull thru sites. Dump station and water at the National Park across the river. There were only 6 sites with campers so private and peaceful! Highly recommend this gem!

Gateway to the north unit

One of my favorite car camping spots. Perfect gateway to the north unit of Teddy and has some good trails of its own. The sites are nicely spaced and well maintained. Peace quiet and coyotes at night. Tough to beat.

Great Views - Close to TR National Park N Unit

When we visited the North Unit of Roosevelt National Park, their campgrounds were closed, so we had to seek one outside the park. This was extremely close to the park and had great views! There are no hook-ups, and no dump station. The only water is a well that you have to pump yourself with a handle, so come with your black/grey tanks empty and water tank full. They do allow generators, but it would be nice if they didn't. We have solar panels so we always get annoyed with generators ruining the peace and quiet. The sites are large and mostly level. There must be horse trails out of this area as there were quite a few horse trailers camping. We would definitely consider this a good back-up in the future if the NPS campground is full.

Beautiful, clean, peaceful!

We stayed here two nights in a tent and loved it! Absolutely beautiful campground right across the river from Theodore Roosevelt National Park’s north unit. The scenery is breathtaking. There are three different loops A-C, and while most sites have no shade there are a couple in loop B (including ours #12) that have trees and provide good shade and wind protection. The pit toilets were some of the cleanest I’ve encountered in my history of camping. We were there in mid-September so the campground wasn’t full but there were a decent number of campers for being off season. Still, it was pretty quiet, save for the coyotes howling in the distance and a stray moo or two from nearby cows. There’s also trail access right to Maah Dah Hey and Long X trails right in the campground which is really nice! All in all this is a wonderful spot and one of my favorite campgrounds I’ve ever stayed at. 1 mi. gravel road to get in.

Convenient spot, but crowded

Pros:

- Very convenient to Roosevelt NP. Could be walked if needed.

- Despite being quite full/crowded when I was there, it was quiet at night.

- The hosts were very kind, they came around each evening checking if the guests were ok and if they needed anything.

Cons:

- It was listed online as $3 a night with people who verified that's what they paid, but I got there to find the box for paying listing $10 a night, so that's what I paid. Couldn't find the host to ask before paying.

- Given the geography of the locale, there was zero shade. in Mid-August this meant blistering temps close to 100 and nowhere to go to cool off since I was tent camping.

- It was crowded and there is no privacy between sites given the lack of trees or other natural barriers.

- There is no firewood to be gathered nearby. Bring wood if you're planning on a fire.

Sidenote: I didn't realize I was exactly right on the line where the time zone changes. I wanted to get to the visitor's center right when they opened to not get on the trail too late, but ended up there an hour after they opened! Something to keep in mind.

Secluded!

When we camped here it was the off season and we only had to share the campground with 3 other groups of people. It is a close drive to Theodore Roosevelt National Park which is nice because we could spend all day at the park and then easily make it back in time to cook dinner and enjoy the site as well.

A Cheap Alternative

A cheaper alternative to TRNP’s Juniper Campground. This campground offers beautiful panoramic views of the North Dakota Badlands. Additionally, you can access the Maah Daah Hey Trail and explore the Badlands from here. The campground is well kept and is typically pretty quiet. There are no showers, but there is toilets and accessible drinking water.

A bargain at twice the price

We spent two nights at this campground in early October. We had it nearly to ourselves.

A couple things to note:

October can be cold! It got down below freezing in the first week of October.

It gets windy. There's a site in the B loop that offers a good amount of protection from wind from most directions.

The Maah Daah Hey and Long X trails start at this campground. We did a great 11ish mile mountain bike loop by heading up Maah Daah Hey and down Long X.

There's a well here, but the water looked pretty brown. We boiled it.
