Dispersed Site - Grassland Boondocking

Wind sweeps across the ridgeline at this dispersed camping area, where gravel roads climb through open grassland to elevated sites overlooking the badlands. Campers spread out across multiple levels of terrain, from lower spots near the access road to higher perches that require navigating steeper grades and tighter turns.

The area operates on a first-come basis with numbered sites recently added by forest service workers. Joseph G. notes that campers typically find "A TON of space to ourselves" with "closest neighbors about 100 yards away in either direction." Road noise from Interstate 94 carries across the open terrain, though most campers report the sound fades into background white noise after dark.

Access varies significantly by vehicle type and weather conditions. The gravel road handles dry conditions well for most RVs, but Eric A. warns it's "not a place I'd bring a trailer or bigger RV if it was wet out." Larger rigs typically stay in lower areas, while smaller vehicles can navigate the full loop to ridge-top sites with expanded views. Cell service improves with elevation, particularly for AT&T and Verizon users.

The location serves as a convenient base for exploring Cottonwood Campground — Theodore Roosevelt National Park and accessing the Painted Canyon Visitor Center for basic facilities. Campers often drive to nearby Sully Creek State Park for water and dump station services. Exit 23 lacks westbound Interstate access, requiring eastbound travel to Exit 24 for westbound re-entry.

Plan for wind exposure on ridge sites and consider lower elevation spots during storms. Mud can create challenging conditions near the entrance after rainfall.

Campers regularly cited the stunning badlands views and spacious dispersed sites near Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Many visitors reported excellent accessibility and peaceful camping despite some highway noise and wind. No amenities available, requiring trips to nearby facilities for water and waste disposal.

Amazing spot

This was actually my first dispersed camping experience, and it was fantastic. Just as the other reviews said, it’s easy to find and navigate. For me as a solo traveler, it was the perfect mix of dispersed but not completely alone.

incredible!

we stayed here 2 nights over memorial day weekend. got there friday afternoon and almost every site was empty. we secured site 7, arguably the best in the camp! there is a large divot at the entrance so clearance is needed for this site but all the other sites are fairly flat upon entering. 360 panoramic views over the national park and the grasslands. it was incredible. obviously no toilets or water & no fires but thats what you get when you dispersed camp! the wind wasn’t bad when we stayed but I definitely could see it get really windy up here. the only downside to this campsite being right by the park, is that its right off of I94, it didn’t bother me because im a heavy sleeper but you could clearly hear every car. maybe this is better at the lower sites or the north facing sites. most sites are spread out but we didn’t have any neighbors regardless. very peaceful and very unique. will 100% stay here again if im ever in the area. i wanted to review this and leave some great pictures because to be honest from the previous picture reviews i wasn’t sold on the campsite until we got here. road is gravel to get there and theres only one sketchy part that only lasts a few feet, i think most cars even without 4wd could make this, im sure some trailers could but id be cautious with taking an RV up past site 6. I hope this review helps those considering boondocking here (you should do it). cheers and happy camping<3

Perfect dispersed campground!

This spot was super easy to find using the coordinates and everything was clearly marked and well-kept. I pulled into spot #4 and there were 2 other campsites in sight that were occupied but they were pretty spread out. Close enough to not feel alone but far enough for privacy!

The views were great, campsites were spacious and felt safe, and there was a fire pit. I had no trouble pulling in with my Chevy Malibu so most vehicles should be able to get around the campground without issues.

14 or so designated dispersed campsites along good gravel road. About half the sites will accommodate larger rigs. The road deadens at the communications tower.

Quiet, scenic solitude

A red dirt road with a series of pull-in spots large enough to accommodate a camper or RV. Spots are spaced out a couple hundred feet. Other than your fellow boondockers, there’s no one else in sight. The views are picturesque.

Lots of space. Be careful ..

...the hill is pretty steep and a couple sharp turns. If you are towing just make sure you are comfortable with that. It's a one lane road up the ill with blind spots so go slow and yield. Remember you'll have to come back down! Beautiful views though nicely spaced out spots.

Newly added site numbers

This area is also known as Scoria Boondocking on Campendium. Workers came through on Aug 29th 2025 and put up site numbers. Indicated they were trying to get control of where people park. We were at the new #5 site with a 35' 5th wheel. Site is unlevel the further into the site you go but we were able to level pretty easily more towards where you enter the site. We were happy with our site location and views. You could hear road noise from I94 but it wasn't too bad. Also had a view of fireworks from the Medora music show each night around 9:35. Not sure how many sites they ended up marking further up the gravel road. There is no west bound reentry onto i94 from this exit (23). You have to go east bound back to exit 24 to go west again.

Spectacular

This is one of my favorite campsites to date. It’s totally dispersed camping, and there’s a lot of dirt road dust, however our site was super quiet and dark for beautiful stargazing. The other five star reviews are in my opinion legitimate. It was easy to come from Medora, North Dakota to the site, but it appears that you only get an entrance and exit on the Medora side. We almost went here for a second night, but got a first come first serve site inside the park for the next night.

GRASSLAND DISPERSED CAMPING

We stayed 2 nights in July in this area and it was great! Plenty of spots, so we didn't feel like we were on top of other campers. Close to the National Park which was why we stayed and we were able to use all the facilities at the Painted Canyon Visitor center for morning rituals ( aka teeth brushing bathroom in a toilet, face washing etc) We did drive to a Rough Rider State park for a shower which was 5$ a person( totally worth it after multiple muddy river crossings on our hike) Rooftop tent campers be aware the top ridge is so windy the first night we stayed we were whipping around all night but the second night we stayed on the lower ridge and the wind was much better.

Found this site close to Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Road in is pretty good, any right should be able to make it. There are several sites in the camping area, some could fit big rigs. Smaller rigs can get into any of the other sites. Despite being near the Interstate, it was really quiet at night. Great Verizon signal on this location. Starlink had some of the fastest connections we have seen.
