Within Little Missouri National Grassland, Coal Creek Campground provides a US Forest Service base camp about 11 miles south of Medora. The final 8.6 miles follow well-maintained gravel roads wide enough for RVs up to 35 feet, though sites appear to be back-in only.
Sites feature level gravel pads with fire pits and picnic tables, separated by trees and brush for privacy. Vault toilets stay clean and well-stocked. Sites 5-10 occupy higher ground with broader views of the surrounding North Dakota badlands. The campground stays fenced with a cattle guard at the entrance. Cell service works well for major carriers, and most sites offer clear sky access for solar or satellite equipment. At $10 per night, reservations aren't required, making this a reliable option for camping near Medora when Theodore Roosevelt National Park fills up.
