Tent campsites near Rock Hall, Maryland offer several options within driving distance, though most require a short journey from town. Patapsco Valley State Park-Hilton Area provides tent-specific sites with fire rings and picnic tables, while Sandy Point State Park offers youth group camping from March to October. Both parks maintain designated tent areas with varying levels of amenities and seasonal availability. Blackbird State Forest in nearby Delaware, though temporarily closed, has historically provided primitive tent camping with spacious, well-separated sites.

The tent camping experience at these locations varies considerably in terms of terrain and facilities. At Patapsco Valley, tent sites are set on crushed stone surfaces that can be challenging for tent stakes, with campers noting the importance of bringing alternative securing methods. Most tent-only areas provide fire pits, picnic tables, and access to toilets, though amenities differ by location. A visitor commented, "The crushed stone at the sites isn't comfortable for tents, and they won't let you pitch it on the ground, so bring extra pads and alternative ways to secure the tent." Sites at Blackbird State Forest feature dirt ground covered with woodchips and evergreen needles, creating a more tent-friendly surface.

Walk-in tent sites at Patapsco Valley State Park offer a more secluded experience compared to drive-in options, with the campground situated in a heavily wooded setting that provides natural privacy between sites. The terrain includes rolling hills that can channel water during rainstorms, making lower sites prone to flooding. Based on reviews from The Dyrt, tent campers should select higher elevation sites when rain is forecasted. The Hilton area specifically caters to tent camping with no RVs allowed, creating a quieter atmosphere. Trails connect directly to the campgrounds, allowing tent campers to explore the extensive trail network without driving. During fall, the changing foliage creates particularly scenic surroundings for primitive tent camping experiences.

Greenbelt Park Campground — Greenbelt Park

Close to washington as we could get. Could also park our skoolie bus which was nice and had plenty of close by shower with bathrooms. Keep in mind only one shower per restroom house. We stayed at a pretty slow season so it wasn’t bad. Would recommend if visiting DC! They also have a dump station and water fill up.

      Annapolis MWR Academy RV/Campground

      Great spot for Retirees/Active

If you want to be near Annapolis, right on the Severn River...this is it. About 15 RV spots nestled in the woods...with full hook ups. A couple of primitive spots as well. Just a quick 5 min walk to the river...right across from the Academy. NEX, gas within 10 min walk, and 15 min drive to downtown Annapolis. Staff is always great here, and the park is clean....for a park on the woods.

      Campsites at Watkins Regional Park

Excellent choice for a Washington visit or local getaway

Based on my stay 3 nights and what I read of Greenbelt Park (the other closeby to Washington campground) I would say this has to be much better and I will stay here again on a future visit. Campground sits inside of a much larger park with great trails, amenities and well maintained. Campground is quiet, lots of trees, forest and yet each space is very large with good spacing and privacy to adjacent sites. High tree canopy at your site so lots of room to spread out. Sites themselves are a little rustic - a mix of grass, gravel and dirt, but not muddy (it rained a good bit prior to my stay) - but in good condition. Shower/toilet block is clean and good hot water and good water pressure. Most sites are flat or near flat and the ones that aren't need minimal levelling blocks. Campground apparently is never full and there was only 1 other when I was there - really hard to believe. There is a neighborhood road up by the sites near the shower block but it is low speed and lightly travelled and I had no disturbance from it. Nice surrounding neighborhood. No signs of vagrants. Park police patrolled multiple times per day and report very little non-camper entry to ther facilities. I felt very safe.Easy access to Eashington - bus stop outside the campground to metro or just drive to the metro (free parking weekend, $6 midweek) and then train (about 8 per hour) into the sites - an hour or less total to get there. For more local people, this seems like a good escape "to the woods" without travelling forever.

      Lums Pond State Park Campground

      Lums Pond campground

First time at this campground really like it a lot will be returning. The bathrooms are always clean. The grounds are always kept up. Just a really nice place to stay. Most of the sites have some kind of shade.

      Bay Shore Campground

      Fred’s bay shore

One of our favorite places. Very well kept. No bathhouse so bring your own. A lot of shady sites. Great views of Chesapeake bay. Flat roads in the area for cycling.

      Susquehanna State Park Campground

A little noisy - park stuff, not campers

A beautiful, well maintained park with lots to do, great bathroom facilities and extremely nice people. The electric sites aren't all together, so you don't have RV's lined up but maybe annoying for folks who are tent camping. Avoid the locations in the mid-30's by the dumpster, both staff and campers start shaking the lid around 6:30. Between 5 AM and noon staff were driving big trucks and ATV's around with loud reverse horns, and slamming the fire pit grills, which they store sideways. Overall I had a really wonderful time, but that's largely down to good sound reduction inside the van. Almost zero cell service. I was able to get a couple of text messages in and out, but seemed to be a fluke.

      Elk Neck State Park Campground

      Great for families

This campsite was amazing for our first tent camping experience. The park was a godsend for keeping our toddler occupied and we felt very safe overall. While the beach is pretty, be careful about the water condition. We were warned before entering and informed of the risks. They were very clear on the condition of the water that day which was a yellow, slight risk. But normally it should be okay. We would definitely camp here again.

    Guide to Rock Hall

While the immediate area has limited dedicated camping facilities, nearby state parks and forests provide tent sites within 30-45 minutes of town. The region sits along the Chesapeake Bay's eastern shore, with relatively flat terrain and humid summers where temperatures typically range from 75-90°F during peak camping season from May through September.

    What to do

Water activities at Matoaka Beach Cottages: The private beach access makes this spot ideal for swimming and relaxation. One camper shared, "I just showed up and got a perfect camp spot with a view of the sunrise and access to the private beach." Matoaka Beach Cottages offers tent camping with water views.

Fossil hunting at Sandy Point: This popular activity draws families during spring visits. A camper noted, "Our favorite thing to do is to fossil hunt for sharks teeth. In late spring while school is still in session, it's less crowded." The beach areas offer good searching grounds after storms.

Hiking at Patapsco Valley: The park features trails connecting directly to camping areas. According to a review, "The trails we have been on are all pretty moderate to hard but offer beautiful waterfalls and river views. This definitely is a park that takes a while to explore all of it."

    What campers like

Spacious, private sites at Blackbird State Forest Campground: The widely-spaced tent sites create a sense of seclusion. One camper mentioned, "Only 8 sites in the campground, very spaced apart. Each site has lots of room, very much enjoyed our stay and will return!" The forest setting provides natural screening between campsites.

Scenic river views at Susquehannock State Park: The overlooks provide excellent vantage points of the Susquehanna River. A visitor noted, "It's look out over the Susquehanna River is fantastic and puts you up with the birds." Tent camping here connects you with panoramic landscapes.

Natural surroundings at Endeavor Point: The waterfront setting creates a peaceful atmosphere. As one camper described, "The pier was perfect to fish or crab off of and the beach had great views of the sunrise." The combination of water access and natural beauty makes this a sought-after tent camping spot.

    What you should know

Weather considerations: Lower elevation sites at some campgrounds can flood during heavy rain. Tent campers should be selective about site placement, especially during spring storms when rainfall is common throughout the region.

Seasonal pest management: Summer camping brings mosquitoes at many locations. A Blackbird State Forest camper warned, "And you may regret not brining mosquito repellent. The blood-suckers are relentless." Pack appropriate repellent for tent camping near Rock Hall.

Site surface variations at Patapsco Valley State Park-Hilton Area: Some tent sites present challenges for setup. A recent camper shared, "One negative was that when it rains it really flushes through the grounds. We had a site on the lower end of the loop and our site was hard to set up as we arrived during a storm."

    Tips for camping with families

Playgrounds and activities: Some campgrounds feature exceptional facilities for children. At Patapsco Valley, "The Hilton entrance of Patapsco Valley Park is perfect for keeping the kids entertained. There is a huge playground, sensory trail and nature discovery center at the entrance to the park."

Off-season beach visits at Sandy Point State Park Youth Group Camping: For families with kids, timing matters. A regular visitor advised, "Extremely over crowded in the summer. The park closes daily very early as it hits capacity. The best times to go are winter, spring, and fall."

Jellyfish awareness: Late summer swimming requires caution. According to a camper, "August is the worst month to visit if you like the water. Jellyfish take over with a vengeance!" Plan water activities accordingly when tent camping with kids.

    Tips from RVers

Access restrictions at Matoaka: The approach to some campsites requires careful navigation. The narrow roads and cliff-side positioning limit larger vehicles, making this better for tent camping or small trailers only.

Military campground option at Military Park United States Naval Academy/Annapolis Naval Station Annapolis FamCamp: For those with military connections seeking a budget option near Annapolis. A visitor described it as "Very spartan but great location. Not much to do in the campground and some long timers there. Dirt cheap."

Seasonal road conditions: Spring thaws can create muddy access roads at some campgrounds. Early season tent camping near Rock Hall may require vehicles with higher clearance, particularly after heavy rain events.
