Out of the way with great hiking

Two loops. One has a few sites with electric and some cabins. Potable water is available in several places on each loop. The bathhouses are rebuilt recently and are very nice. Some walk in tent sites. There are lots of long scenic hiking trails down to Deer creek and to the Susquehanna River. There’s a great bike trail to the Conowingo dam which is a nice place to visit, and a great place to see lots of eagles. There are amazing wildflowers on that trail. You can bike to the trail from the campground. All downhill. So be ready for the climb back up. One trail has two amazing specimen trees. There’s a working, renovated mill and home at the river also.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is camping allowed in Susquehannock State Forest and how does it differ from the state park?

Susquehannock State Forest does permit camping, which differs significantly from Susquehannock State Park camping. The state forest likely offers more primitive, dispersed camping opportunities with fewer amenities compared to the park's developed campground. While the state park provides defined campsites, electric hookups, cabins, and modern bathhouses within a more concentrated area, the forest typically allows for a more remote backcountry experience. Forest camping may also have different reservation systems and regulations. Contact the Pennsylvania DCNR for specific forest camping rules, permits, and designated camping areas in Susquehannock State Forest.

What trails and recreational activities are shown on the Susquehannock State Park map?

Susquehannock State Park features numerous scenic hiking trails with varying difficulty levels. The trail system includes paths leading to spectacular overlooks of the Susquehanna River, providing opportunities to view birds and wildlife from elevated perspectives. Several trails connect to Deer Creek, offering water-based recreational opportunities. The park's network of long, scenic hiking paths appeals to day hikers seeking both short family-friendly walks and more challenging treks. Beyond hiking, visitors can enjoy wildlife observation, photography at the scenic overlooks, and potentially fishing or water activities near the Susquehanna River access points.

What camping facilities are available at Susquehannock State Park?

Susquehannock State Park offers a compact but well-equipped camping area with two distinct loops. One loop features several electric sites and a few cabins for those seeking additional comfort. The other appears to be dedicated to organized group tent camping. Both loops provide convenient access to potable water stations. The park features recently renovated bathhouses that are well-maintained. For those who prefer a more rustic experience, walk-in tent sites are available. The campground's small size contributes to a more intimate outdoor experience while still providing essential amenities for a comfortable stay.

What do visitor reviews say about Susquehannock State Park's camping experience?

Campers at Susquehannock State Park appreciate the campground's small, intimate setting that offers a worthwhile experience despite its modest size. The recently rebuilt bathhouses receive positive mentions for their cleanliness and modern facilities. Visitors value the convenience of multiple potable water stations throughout the camping loops and the variety of accommodation options including electric sites, cabins, and walk-in tent areas. The campground's proximity to scenic overlooks and hiking trails is frequently highlighted as a major advantage, allowing campers to easily access the park's natural attractions without long travel times from their sites.
