Several RV parks and campgrounds surround Jay, Maine, with options ranging from full hookup sites to electric-only setups for motorhome travelers. Jellystone Park Androscoggin Lake in North Monmouth provides full hookup sites with 50-amp service from May through mid-October, with big-rig friendly spaces on level gravel pads. Augusta West Kampground, operating from May 15 to September 30, features water, electric, and sewer hookups with both 30 and 50-amp options. Closer to Jay, Martin Stream Campground in Turner offers 21 sites with electric hookups and a sanitary dump station, operating May through October. Bethel Outdoor Adventure and Campground accommodates large RVs up to 45 feet, though one visitor noted, "Not all sites are level and we found it difficult to get into because of the tight roads and dangling tree limbs." Coos Canyon Campground in Byron provides 50 RV sites with full hookups including both 30 and 50-amp electrical service.

RV camping in this region requires planning for varying site conditions. Many campgrounds have gravel roads with occasional potholes that can create dust during dry periods. Cell service varies significantly throughout the area, with stronger signals near larger towns and limited connectivity in more remote locations. Dump stations are available at most parks, though placement can sometimes be problematic. One RV owner reported, "The sewer was uphill at our site which is a big pet peeve of ours and super annoying when it comes to empty the tanks." Most RV parks in the region welcome pets but enforce leash rules. Propane is typically available in nearby towns like Bethel and Winthrop, with some campgrounds offering on-site sales. Winter camping options are limited, with most RV parks closing after Labor Day or by mid-October.

Lake St. George State Park Campground

      Prett lake setting

This campground is located on the northwest shore of Lake St. George which is a beautiful spring fed lake. The closest big town is Belfast which is just 16 miles west and Augusta is about 25 miles away. The park offers lots to do like boating, picnicking, volleyball, fishing, hiking, and swimming (which is in a designated area with lifeguards in the summer months). The park has rental canoes, paddle boats and kayaks for those that don’t have their own. We visited in the summer and the campground was pretty full but you didn’t feel like you were smothered. There are only 39 campsites, most of which are reservable online. The campground is also open in the winter and offers lots of winter outdoor activities. Campsites are a mix of gravel, grass, shady, and completely open sites. Be careful which site you book because some campsites are wide open with no shade so you may not want to book those in the summer. There is are newer restrooms with showers towards the front of the campground. The restrooms and showers are together in one room so you have lots of privacy. The shower had plenty of hot water. A dump station and potable water fill are located near the entrance. Sites along the water were nice and large enough for big-rigs but many were unlevel. We thought sites 21-23 and 30 were some of the nicest. Campsites in the middle section seemed more level than the ones along the lake or nearest the road in the woods. The sites in the middle also tend to be larger and you could use as a pull-thru. Our Verizon phone and hotspot worked well and we were able to pick up a few over-the-air antenna. One of the downsides is the noise from Route 3 which is a busy road. The other is that there are no hook-ups in the campground. Each site does have a firepit and picnic table. Nearby is the Lake St. George Brewing Company which has great beer and a dog-friendly patio. Check out the little town of Liberty nearby which has a restaurant, an interesting tool store and Liberty Graphics which has tons of cheap t-shirts with cool designs.

      Rangeley Lake State Park Campground

      Fall camping at its best!

This campground is located in one of the prettiest places in Maine during the fall. The expansive views are magnificent! Rangely State Park is fairly small with just over 800 acres but has lots to do other than camping like hiking, wildlife watching, photography, fishing, hunting, and lots of winter sports.

The campground at Rangeley Lake State Park has 50 sites which are well-spaced and most are close to the lakeshore. There is not much in the way of amenities except a picnic area, playground, and a boat launch with docks(in fact, there are canoes for rent on-site). A“beach” area has picnic tables with grill and stairs leading down to the swimming area. Make sure you wear shoes because the beach is more rocky than sandy. A short-forested hiking trail (slightly less than a mile) runs from the park entrance to the contact station. There are bathrooms, showers, water fill-up, dish washing station. Two dump stations are located near the entrance and are level and easily accessible. There is also a potable water fill-up near the dump stations. There are very few sites that will accommodate big-rigs as many are short. The website and reservation system has a map which identifies what size RV fits in each site. The larger and more private sites are 23 through 48. Some sites have electric and water and some are primitive. Many sites can be reserved in advance on-line (with a two-night minimum and max stay of two weeks). The campground does have quiet hours between 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m which all campers abided by. By in large, this was a pretty quiet campground with most people keeping to themselves and void of loud music and parties. A couple of things to beware of are bugs and booze. Be prepared for black flies and mosquitoes, particularly in the spring and summer. Plus, ticks can be really bad so make sure you do tick checks regularly. And, park rules prohibit use of intoxicating beverages in public areas. We did all our drinking discretely at our site and didn’t have any problems.

Nearby is the Height of Lands which provides amazing expansive views, especially in the summer. The town of Rangely has the largest grocery store in the area, restaurants, and some shops and a theater. The nearby town of Oquossoc has a great brewpub(the Portage Tab House) and a great little historical outdoor-themed museum which is very interesting.

      Town Hall Road Dispersed

      Dispersed Camping

The campsites are very nice, but they are mostly made for tents or at biggest a van. There were only two spots that we could fit our school bus. About 35ft. We also have starlink so that’s a necessity to have clear sky view. The only campsite with this was the last campsite before the end of the road closes. Which was taken but they were gone in the morning we just moved down. Now it’s very secluded but the drive is very long down so plan for a couple days. You can stay up to 14 days. Road down is a little bumpy but our school bus made it through!

      Bradbury Mountain State Park Campground

      Very Very Clean

We are used to dispersed out in the woods.

We are older and stayed 4 nights in the tent. The facility had the bathroom, we travel with our potty. The showers weee extremely nice. Great water pressure and hot water.

The camp sites are close together about 10 ft between. If you are looking for very remote and no one around you this is not the place for you.

We stayed in lot 7 right by the trail access. We were trying to sleep in but the early morning hikers walk right by the site.

The staff was super helpful, they had fire wood bundles there reasonably priced. It was to far from town either.

We found everyone to be very friendly and they all obeyed the dog leash rules that was excellent.

If you have an expensive car watch the falling acorns. 4 days of them I may have to make an insurance claim, not to mention I got hit by one that left a bruise.

The kitchen area was great for coffee we didn’t even have to fire up the generator.

The bathroom area set towards the middle, we are older and don’t run as fast so we always bring our camp toilet. They kept the bathrooms clean the toilet paper was good. Not a regular toilet no flushing or water or anything.

      Grafton Notch Campground

      Very nice campground

The campground is small but extremely well kept. Bathrooms very clean and up to date. Mo the woman who runs this campground is very sweet and attentive.

There is only one electric site. The other sites don’t have electric hook up.

      Town Hall Road Dispersed

      Secluded, scenic, and peaceful

Pretty primitive sites, small pull in spaces and rock fire rings. But the area is beautiful and secluded, definitely enjoyed staying here and chilling at the creek, I doubt it’s any good for fishing though. Wouldn’t recommend for large setups, definitely no trailers, vans or camper trucks are the biggest vehicles I’d feel comfortable taking there, the drive wasn’t bad, but depending on which site you get you may be struggling to fit your rig.

    Guide to Jay

The Jay region of western Maine features forested hills and mountain terrain with elevations between 400-800 feet. Campgrounds in this area typically operate from May through October, with many sites situated near the Androscoggin River and surrounding lakes. Summer temperatures average 75-85°F during the day, dropping to 50-60°F at night.

    What to do

Canoe the Androscoggin River: Bethel Outdoor Adventure and Campground offers direct river access with shuttle service for paddlers. "We rented a canoe and had a great time paddling back to the campsite," reports Megan S., who enjoyed the campground's proximity to water activities.

Gold panning: At Coos Canyon Campground, visitors can try their luck at finding precious metals. "Rent a pan or sluice from the Coos Canyon Rock and Gem shop a 3 min walk from the office and pan for gold in the river right from the campground," suggests David B., who appreciated this unique activity.

Disc golf: Beaver Brook Campground (now Jellystone Park Androscoggin Lake) features an on-site course popular with families. "Very nice campground with a good camp store and disc golf course. We will stay again!" notes J B., highlighting this recreational option not found at many other area campgrounds.

Swim in natural pools: The Swift River at Coos Canyon Campground and Cabins offers natural swimming holes. One visitor mentioned, "Fishing, hiking, cliff jumping, and swimming can all be done with a quick walk all while staying in the campground," showcasing the variety of water activities available directly from camp.

    What campers like

Lake access with wildlife viewing: Augusta West Kampground provides waterfront sites where campers enjoy observing local fauna. "This a beautiful spot, right on the Lake, listened to the loons, watched Canadian Geese with their goslings and saw a bald eagle swoop down," writes Michi P., describing the natural encounters possible from lakeside sites.

Family-oriented amenities: Stony Brook Recreation and Campground offers numerous facilities for all ages. "Nice pool, fun rec room area (we learned how to play shuffleboard!)" mentions Ashley I., highlighting recreational options beyond standard camping.

River sounds and scenery: Campsites near water features provide natural ambiance. "Our site was right next to the river and was fantastic," shares Matthew H. about his stay at Coos Canyon, noting how "you can hear the river at night" – creating a peaceful sleeping environment.

Clean facilities: Multiple campgrounds maintain well-kept bathhouses. "The bathhouse in the campground was old and tired and heavily used by people floating the river," observes Nancy W. about Bethel Outdoor Adventure, providing insight into peak-time conditions campers should expect.

    What you should know

Cell service limitations: Connectivity varies significantly throughout the Jay region. "No cell reception and wifi only available at the camp store," reports Camie S. about Coos Canyon Campground, while other campgrounds offer more reliable connections near main buildings.

Site privacy considerations: Sebago Lake State Park Campground has closely positioned campsites. "The campsites definitely felt like they were on top of each other and are pretty small," notes Jess G., adding, "2 sites were within 15ft of our fire pit," providing important spatial context for planning.

Seasonal availability: Most campgrounds operate from May through October. "This campground has ATV trail access. There was no cell service but wifi was available at the office," notes a visitor about the recreational options and connectivity at Coos Canyon.

Water conditions: Lakes and rivers can have variable water quality. Sebago Lake sometimes experiences water quality issues, with Michelle D. cautioning visitors to "Watch out for duckage" as "sometimes the lake is not swim able" – a practical water activity consideration.

    Tips for camping with families

Water slides for kids: Beaver Brook Campground offers aquatic features specifically for younger visitors. "Amazing campground. Has a lot of stuff for kids including playground, pool, water slides, canoeing, kayaking, mini golf and disc golf," shares Peter F., detailing multiple activity options.

Bike-friendly campgrounds: Sebago Lake State Park provides safe cycling routes. "We loved the campground and it is great for our eight year old daughter who can safely ride her bike around with the other kids at the campground," mentions Elissa E., highlighting this family-friendly feature.

Educational activities: Several campgrounds offer organized programming. Angela M. describes Beaver Brook's offerings: "Kids loved the big red and blue slides at the pool, restaurant, ice cream and store all in the same area... candy bar bingo (where you can play bingo WITH your kids and was quite fun)."

Family-focused campgrounds: Some properties explicitly cater to families. "This is a wonderful, family and pet friendly campground. Very well kept," reports Dawn about Martin Stream Campground, which offers 21 sites with various amenities for families.

    Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: Terrain can present setup difficulties. Nancy W. notes about Bethel Outdoor Adventure: "Not all sites are level and we found it difficult to get into because of the tight roads and dangling tree limbs," providing practical insight for drivers of larger rigs.

Dump station policies: Martin Stream Campground has specific rules. "You are only allowed ONE use at dump station upon leaving the campground," cautions Rod L., adding that additional dumps cost "$30" – important information for extended stays.

Site selection strategy: Augusta West Kampground offers various options. "We stayed in the 'new sites' adjacent to the entrance road; it was a long nice site with gravel but was not private. Most sites are packed in; close to others with not a lot of privacy," advises Quinn G., suggesting location considerations for privacy-seeking RVers.

RV site amenities: Campgrounds around Jay have varied hookup offerings. "Lots of Lakeside sites. For the most part it's RVs and trailers. Sites are equipped with water and electric. If you have sewer," notes Dwayne B. about Augusta West Kampground, helping RVers understand the available utility connections.
