Accessible via rough gravel roads, Coos Canyon Campground and Cabins sits directly adjacent to the Swift River in Byron, Maine, with nightly rates ranging from $30 to $210. Reservations are available for this established campground that welcomes pets and offers both drive-in and walk-in access to its sites.
The campground provides electric, water, and sewer hookups for RVs, along with a dump station, restrooms, showers, and drinking water. WiFi reaches only the camp store area, with spotty coverage extending to some sites. David B. notes the WiFi "worked at our site the first day but didn't after that," with staff explaining the extenders aren't designed to reach most camping areas. Cell service remains limited throughout the property.
Sites offer decent spacing under shaded trees, with several positioned near the river for direct water access. The adjacent Coos Canyon provides swimming holes, fishing spots, and cliff jumping opportunities within walking distance. Gold panning equipment can be rented from the nearby rock and gem shop, allowing visitors to prospect directly in the Swift River from the campground. Joshua B. describes the canyon as "a winding rocky river gorge" with "some swimming holes and spots to jump from up on the ledges."
The property attracts ATV enthusiasts, with trails accessible from the campground and frequent four-wheeler traffic during busy periods. A small playground and camp store provide basic supplies, though firewood costs $8 per bundle. Clean bathrooms and shower facilities require coins for hot water. Angel Falls sits about ten minutes away by car, while Tumbledown Mountain offers hiking opportunities in the area.
Campers seeking additional options can explore places to camp near Byron or visit nearby Silver Lake Campground for alternative river access.
