RV camping near Kennebunkport, Maine ranges across several seasonal timeframes, with most campgrounds operating from April through October. Coastal camping options are concentrated within 20-30 miles of Kennebunkport, primarily in Old Orchard Beach, Wells, and Scarborough. Several RV parks offer heated pools and trolley services to nearby beaches, with seasonal activities peaking from July through August.
What to do
Beach access and trolleys: At Sun Outdoors Saco Old Orchard Beach, trolley service connects campers directly to Old Orchard Beach. "There is a shuttle that takes you to the beach which is convenient. During the shoulder season dogs are allowed on the beach but not the summer," notes Nancy W. The campground sits just four miles from the beach area.
Marsh exploration: Explore the Scarborough Marsh from Wild Duck Adult Campground & RV Park. "This quiet campground is about a mile from the Eastern Trail through the Scarborough Marsh," writes Kevin W. The Audubon center nearby offers kayak and canoe rentals for paddling the marsh waterways.
Local attractions: Motor to nearby coastal towns from motorhome-friendly campsites. "Not too far from the campground are the towns of Kennebunkport, Wells, and Biddeford and a little farther will have you in Ogunquit or Portland," says a visitor to Sun Outdoors Saco. For wildlife viewing, "A great place to explore is Rachael Carson National Wildlife Refuge. There is a small welcome center and trails that wind through the marsh with some beautiful views."
What campers like
Family activities: Wild Acres Tent & Trailer Park offers extensive recreation options. "This campground is one of Maine's best family campgrounds. There is something for everyone at this campground. Beach, adventure course with zip line, 5 pools, activities for kids and adults, horse shoes, bands every weekend," states Rhonda W. The campground hosts regular weekend entertainment through summer.
Quieter options for adults: Adult-focused camping without children provides a different experience. "This adult only campground is peaceful and quiet, with the sounds of birds and the trees being the main thing you hear - it is quite relaxing," writes Heather C. about Wild Duck Adult Campground. The camp features both tent and RV sites with marsh views from select locations.
Themed environments: Cole's Mine RV Resort and Campground offers unique themed areas for families. "They have tons of amenities and themed areas. Great place to stay the week or the season," mentions Peter F. According to another camper, "This place is perfect for small families or parents of younger kids. 2 amazing playgrounds, clean facilities and one amazing pool."
What you should know
Site spacing varies significantly: Some campgrounds pack sites tightly while others offer more room. At Sea-Vu West Premier RV Resort, "The close location to dining, motorcycle rides, wide/grassy sites and quietness all contribute to a very good stay," writes Susan J. Conversely, at other parks, "The sites that face the marsh are the best sites - they have some grass and lovely views."
Seasonal variations: Many parks transform completely between peak and shoulder seasons. A Wild Acres visitor noted, "We were even seasonal for awhile. There is so much for everyone to do. We will however, never return on Labor Day weekend - way too noisy and quiet hours were not respected (like people partying until 4am)."
Insects in marsh areas: Proximity to marshlands means insects can be problematic. "The only negative of this place was the mosquitoes. They were TERRIBLE. In the time it took after we parked the camper, to when I could dig the bug spray out of our truck I was covered in bites," warns Megan W. about Wild Duck Adult Campground.
Tips for camping with families
Playground options: Seek out campgrounds with multiple play areas. At Cole's Mine RV Resort, "Super fun pool and a small campground so not many people crowding the pool. Many nice fishing spots and lots of play areas and outdoor recreation," reports Samantha N. Smaller campgrounds often mean less competition for recreational facilities.
Entertainment schedules: Check activity calendars when booking. "[Wild Acres] have friendly staff all over the resort that will always make you feel at home. They have great activities every week during the summer for kids and adults and special times they have for teens to be themselves without smaller kids or adults," explains Tammie M.
Beach timing for young children: Tuxbury Pond RV Campground provides an alternative to oceanfront camping with different amenities. "Beautiful campground, clean facilities, decently priced. The pool, playground, bathrooms, and basketball court were all open and well maintained. We really enjoyed our stay!" shares Kristen L. For ocean beaches, time visits with younger children during low tide when waves are less powerful.
Tips from RVers
Site selection considerations: Choose sites based on specific needs rather than general location. "Our site was in a field that was near the bathrooms. We were on S1, near a septic pipe & there was a severely nauseating, strong smell of sewage coming from it; we went to the front desk the next day & asked to move to S5," recounts Sara D. at Tuxbury Pond.
Leveling requirements: Many sites require adjustment for larger rigs. At Shamrock Campground, "Camping spots are a bit cramped. We have a huge tent. But everyone was super nice," notes Leona. Consider bringing leveling blocks regardless of pad material.
Train proximity awareness: Railroad tracks run near some oceanfront campgrounds. "The campground map is missing the train tracks that are between the campground and the ocean. The trains all blow there horn and you will hear it if your at one of the site 'by the ocean'," warns Bryan about Wild Acres Sun RV Resort.
