Best Campgrounds near Whittemore, IA

North central Iowa's Whittemore area features a mix of county-managed and state park campgrounds within a 30-mile radius. Siems County Park, located directly in Whittemore, serves as a central option with both tent and RV sites, operating from April 15 to October 31. Nearby alternatives include The Grotto of the Redemption RV Park in West Bend and Smith Lake County Park near Algona, both offering electric hookups and shower facilities. Most campgrounds in this agricultural region provide basic amenities like picnic tables, fire rings, and access to water, with varying levels of electrical service from 30 to 50 amp connections.

Camping seasons typically run from mid-April through October, with most facilities closing for winter. As one camper noted about a nearby park, "This is about as 'middle of nowhere' as you can get in Iowa!" Many campgrounds feature a mix of grassy and gravel sites, with some offering lake access for fishing and boating. Cell service can be spotty in rural areas, though coverage has improved in recent years. Summer weekends tend to fill quickly at the more popular lake-adjacent sites, while weekdays often provide more solitude. Insect activity increases in summer months, particularly near water features, with mosquitoes being most prevalent in June and July.

Water access represents a significant draw for campers in the region. Smith Lake County Park arranges its sites with "RVs along the edge with all the tents on a hill by the lake," according to visitor reviews. Fishing opportunities abound in the numerous small lakes and ponds, with several campgrounds providing boat ramps or fishing docks. Wildlife viewing, particularly deer and waterfowl, adds to the camping experience, especially during morning hours. Hiking trails vary from short walking paths to longer routes through prairie and woodland areas. While most campgrounds maintain clean facilities, several reviewers mention the close proximity of sites as a potential drawback during busy periods, suggesting off-peak visits for those seeking more privacy.

    Dolliver Memorial State Park Campground

    Peaceful

I stayed at this campground a week after Memorial Day weekend along with my dogs in our minivan/tent. I butted up against woods with neighbors to one side which made me feel like I had a pretty private area to myself. Other than the bugs, which it is that time of the year, I enjoyed our time and the almost non-existent cellphone service. However, I was able to text my family via satellite to let them know I was okay. It could be seen as a pro or con, but I think we all need no phone time at some point to just set still and relax. I look forward to camping here again soon!

    Everett Park

    Quiet, off the beaten path.

Friendly and helpful staff, very accommodating. Beautiful spot, close to the lake. Water fill station, 30A power, washroom & shower if needed. Great price $25 per night (20 if tenting). If you have kids, looks like a great playground, plenty of room to run & play. Sites are large and well spaced.

    Camp site not recommended

The lake is not too deep for boats. In the camping area there are people with motorcycles speeding and making unnecessary noise. I went to complain to the manager and he did nothing about it because the owners of the motorcycles are friends.

    Do not recommend

Never again, because since we arrived, people have complained about my family without us doing anything. They even watched us go to the bathroom. They called the police, claiming we were littering in the street and making unnecessary noises and speeding in the park. To top it all off, they're friends of the manager. It's three spaces against one. I don't recommend anyone staying here, because they recorded everyone who passed by and took pictures of their cars. When we went to tell them we wanted a refund quickly, they told them to call the manager.

    DONT GO!!

It's a nice place with electricity and great bathrooms. But a lot of people from a trailer near us were all the weekend complaining for no reason, yelling at everyone and calling the cops on a lot of people. It's unacceptable that people that are calm trying to have fun with our family have to deal with people feeling entitled of everyone else free time. Will not be here again. I know the camp has no fault of other people's behavior, but admin should be more aware of this behavior and stop it.

    Pilot Knob State Park Campground

    Great place!

Standard site without electric was only $10.00 a night which includes a nearby water spigot to fill your tank with. Put toilets and showers available. The friendly hosts made a point to come by to chat. Two fawns were born there, under one of the picnic tables and they were around all weekend. I’ll be back !
