The Grotto of the Redemption RV Park

Nice place to stop while visiting the Grotto

We stayed at the Grotto of the Redemption RV park for two nights. We were in our class C while slowly making our way across the country. We had no problems getting a spot here. There are two areas. One is very close to a train line, which runs infrequently. Sites are grass, level, and reasonably well maintained. All sites are pull through. Only electrical hookups are available at the sites. This is in good condition. There is fresh water and a dump station available. Each site has a nice grassy area and there are plenty of large trees. Staff was very friendly and helpful. There was a park nearby with a playground.

The RV park is near the Grotto. The Grotto is a fascinating achievement worth a look if you are in the area.

We had 2 bar LTE with Verizon. Our hotspot was usable and performed very well. Campground wifi was not available.

We enjoyed our brief stay at this campground. We will stay again when traveling this way.

    Pilot Knob State Park Campground

Layout of campground would be challenging if full

General: A mixture of tent (non-electric) and electric sites, mostly arranged in several rows.

Site Quality: Mixed. Not all sites are level, and most do not have delineated parking pads (there is a small pavement indent to show where to access the site). A fire pit and picnic table complete the site. Most of the sites are too close together for our liking, however, when we were there (a Monday at the end of August, the day before school started), we were only one of three sites occupied so for our stay it didn’t matter.

Bathhouse: Basic but clean. My biggest complaint is there were no hooks or shelves for toiletries by the sinks. The showers looked nice but we did not use them.

Activities: Horseback riding (there are trails for this), hiking, fishing. Although we did see several trailheads, I did not have a map so didn’t explore them. There is an observation tower, but it is a two-mile walk/drive from the campground (on paved roads; I didn’t try to find hiking trails to get there).

Misc: A shout-out to the great host, Pam, who greeted us as we arrived. The observation tower, entrance gates, and picnic shelter were all constructed by the CCC and were beautiful. It almost seemed like the campground was an afterthought as it is outside the entrance gates and nowhere near the tower. The layout of the campground would be challenging if all sites were occupied.

    Nice campground on nice lake

Large campground with a play park and other sporting area. Lake to swim in - no lifeguard offered. Large sites with water/electric hook up - some full hook sites and big rig friendly. The site we were put in was not set up well for the connections however it was a large site. Very muddy site but they offered to let us use a rug so we didn’t get ours all Muddy.

    Flying Goose Campground & Resort

Really nice set up for a quick stay over off of I-90

We found this place by accident, and were very happy we did. It’s a small family run campground with mostly seasonal campers. Set along the shores of Lake Imogene, which comes out of nowhere surrounded by farm land, and you can’t even see it from the road. Mature shade trees everywhere, Impeccably clean bathrooms, showers, etc. playground, small homemade mini golf course, volleyball, basketball, the works to keep the kids happy and entertained while you relax in a quiet clean setting. We stayed in a bull through site with two other campers, were nice and spaced out and didn’t hear them at all, but we’re told on weekends because of an on-site wedding venue, there are more people and the campsites are full. Mid-week night stats are tops though, and we would absolutely stay here again. The pull through sites have electric, water and sewage at every site.

Everyone we met (owners, staff, other campers) were extremely nice. Good people, great stay.

    Everett Park

    Typical small town campground.

Decent little dock and shelter house. Dump station. Campfire rings and picnic tables. Bathrooms were decent. Electrical hookup only. Kids screaming and people partying super late.

    Beautiful grounds

The grounds are beautiful. We went on a weekday so we were the only ones around. We had site C14. Bathrooms were decent. Playground is kind of small and old. However we had a great time and will probably be back next year when sibley farm is open again. The electric hook ups are really far from the pad so bring an extension. Frisbee golf course within walking distance. Bugs were bad I guess, maybe a tad worse than elsewhere we have camped but not bad enough to keep us from sitting outside in the evening.

    Clean and inviting

Guide to Whittemore

Glamping close to Whittemore, Iowa offers overnight accommodations in yurts, canvas tents, and cabins throughout Webster, Winnebago, and Martin counties. Situated in the Des Moines Lobe landform region, this area features gently rolling terrain with prairie pothole wetlands and elevations averaging 1,200 feet above sea level. Winter temperatures regularly drop below 0°F, making most facilities seasonal with peak availability from May through September.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Clear Lake at McIntosh Woods State Park Campground provides excellent fishing access within 40 miles of Whittemore. "Short walk to nice lake & marsh. Walking trails," notes one visitor who appreciated the convenient water access during a one-night stay.

Water recreation: Swimming and boating at Lake Imogene make Flying Goose Campground & Resort a destination for water activities. A camper observed, "Right on Lake Imogene, which comes out of nowhere surrounded by farm land, and you can't even see it from the road." The lake offers kayak and canoe rentals for visitors without their own watercraft.

Hiking trails: Wooded paths through Pilot Knob State Park Campground provide hiking options for various skill levels. "Nice hiking trails too," comments a reviewer who found the park well-maintained and reasonably priced. The observation tower built by the Civilian Conservation Corps offers panoramic views of the surrounding farmland.

What campers like

Affordable rates: Budget-conscious travelers appreciate the value at many area campgrounds. Sites at Pilot Knob State Park cost "$10.00 for non-electric sites and electric are $18.00," making it accessible for weekend or longer stays.

Clean facilities: Visitors consistently mention well-maintained bathrooms and shower buildings. At Jackson KOA, "In the COVID-19 times we found this campground to be clean and easy to distance. Bathrooms/showers had a fan blowing and window open," demonstrating attention to cleanliness and ventilation.

Natural settings: Mature trees provide shade at many sites. One visitor to Flying Goose noted, "Mature shade trees everywhere, impeccably clean bathrooms, showers, etc." The established tree cover helps moderate summer temperatures that typically reach the mid-80s during peak season.

What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Most glamping accommodations near Whittemore close during winter. The camping season typically runs April through October, with limited options in shoulder seasons.

Reservation requirements: Plan ahead during summer weekends. "We were there for a one night mid-week stay, and it was so quiet and calm because ~70% of the spots are taken by seasonal guests who are primarily at the campgrounds on the weekends," reports a visitor to Flying Goose.

Utility connections: Electric hookup distances vary between sites. At Land of Memories Campground, "The electric hook ups are really far from the pad so bring an extension." Water connections may require additional planning as many campgrounds have central water stations rather than site-specific hookups.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Multiple play areas at some locations keep children entertained. Flying Goose features "a play park and other sporting area" plus "three playgrounds (one at the swimming beach), a mini golf course, and an actual phone booth."

Kid-friendly activities: Plan interactive outings appropriate for various ages. Land of Memories offers "a playground & trails to walk along the Minnesota River. It is a beautiful area." The "wide open grass center of Park is wide open for frisbee kids and such," making it suitable for active families.

Safety considerations: Water features require adult supervision. At Robertson Park, visitors noted issues with vehicles "speeding in the park," suggesting families select sites away from main roads for added safety.

Tips from RVers

Extension cords: Pack additional power cords for sites with distant electrical boxes. A Land of Memories camper advised, "The electric hook ups are really far from the pad so bring an extension."

Leveling requirements: Be prepared for uneven terrain at some locations. At The Grotto of the Redemption RV Park, "Sites are on lush grass and include a view of the grotto, a pond and surrounding residences," but may require leveling equipment for larger rigs.

Dump station access: Not all parks offer full hookups. The Grotto of the Redemption provides "rest rooms, showers, fresh water and a dump station," making it suitable for shorter stays without sewer connections at individual sites.
