Managed by the Bureau of Land Management along Route 313 toward Dead Horse Point, Cowboy Camp sits on open desert terrain with unobstructed sightlines across the canyon country northwest of Moab. Seven first-come, first-served sites spread out across rocky soil, each with a metal fire ring and picnic table. No hookups, no water, no reservations. The access road drops off the highway with little warning and runs rough enough that trailers are not a viable option.
The sites are spaced far enough apart that neighbors are visible but not intrusive. Several reviewers highlight site 7 for its elevated position and open views toward the surrounding mesas, while site 1 is noted as large and relatively flat. Sunsets draw consistent attention across reviews. "By far, the best part of this campground was the sunset," notes Brady R. Wind is a recurring factor, particularly in spring, and campers have reported difficulty staking tents into the hard, rocky ground. Open range land surrounds the area, so encountering cattle is possible.
Facilities are minimal. The vault toilet has no roof and a chain rather than a door, though multiple recent visitors describe it as clean and stocked. There is no water on-site and no dumpster at the campground itself; trash service and a camp host are located at nearby Horsethief Campground down the road. Cell service is limited, with one reviewer reporting occasional one-bar T-Mobile signal. Summer temperatures can reach 100 degrees, so carrying extra water and ice is necessary.
The campground fills quickly on weekends and even on weekday evenings during peak season. One camper arrived at 5:30 p.m. on a Tuesday in October and found only three spots remaining. Mosquitoes have been reported after wet springs. The BLM Cowboy Camp Camping Area is listed separately and may reflect the same or an adjacent area worth cross-referencing when planning. Campers wanting water access, shade, or more developed facilities will find places to camp near BLM Land — Moab Field Office that offer those features. Pets are not permitted at this site.
Description
Secluded campsites tucked along a ridge on the mesas above Moab offering striking vistas of canyon country. High clearance required, no RVs, trailers or pull campers. Individual sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The area has many 4WD roads and mountain bike routes. The campground is located near Canyonlands National Park and Dead Horse Point State Park. The campground has seven individual Sites (limited to 10 people & two vehicles per site); the site has toilets but no water or hook-ups.
