State parks and Corps of Engineers campgrounds surround Franklin, Tennessee, providing a range of camping experiences within a 30-45 minute drive. Henry Horton State Park, located south of Franklin, offers hammock-specific sites alongside traditional tent and RV camping options with full hookups. Montgomery Bell State Park features shaded sites nestled in hollows with creek access and multiple trailheads nearby. Lakeside camping options include Percy Priest Lake's Seven Points and Poole Knobs campgrounds, which provide water access for boaters and paddlers. Private RV resorts like Nashville KOA and Four Corners RV Resort cater to those seeking more amenities, while small private properties like Lil Cabin Big Rocker offer cabin rentals on wooded acreage.

Reservations are essential during peak seasons, particularly for waterfront sites which typically book months in advance. Most state parks remain open year-round, though Corps of Engineers campgrounds typically operate seasonally from April through October. Summer humidity and heat can be intense, with temperatures regularly exceeding 90°F from June through August. As one Franklin resident noted, "Henry Horton State Park is super close to get away for the weekend," making it popular for quick escapes. Cell service varies by location, with Verizon generally providing the most reliable coverage throughout the area. Mosquitoes can be problematic near lakes, especially at dusk during summer months. Many campgrounds feature concrete pads for RVs, though primitive tent sites may have uneven terrain requiring careful site selection.

Lakeside camping receives consistently high ratings from visitors, with many highlighting the peaceful settings and wildlife viewing opportunities. Cedar Creek campers report seeing "ducks, birds, and turtles" along shorelines. Shade is a valued commodity during hot summer months, with sites under mature oak trees being particularly sought after. Bathhouse cleanliness varies widely between facilities, with state parks generally maintaining higher standards than some Corps of Engineers locations. Family-friendly amenities like playgrounds, swimming areas, and easy hiking trails are common at most developed campgrounds. Several campgrounds offer specialized sites, including dedicated hammock camping areas and primitive walk-in sites for those seeking more solitude. Winter camping provides a quieter experience with significantly reduced crowds, though fewer amenities may be available.

Great RV Resort and Perfect for Visiting Nashville

We had such a nice stay. From the moment we arrived, we felt comfortable and welcomed. The staff were genuinely friendly and helpful, and the whole campground had a really nice, relaxed feel to it.

Our site was spacious and easy to get into, and we really appreciated how clean and well cared for everything was. After spending the day exploring Nashville, it was nice to come back to the campground, slow down and just enjoy the evening.

The location worked out great for us too. We were close enough to enjoy everything Nashville has to offer, but when we came back to the RV, it felt like we could get away from all the activity and relax.

One of the things we enjoy about RV travel is finding places that you actually look forward to coming back to at the end of the day, and this was definitely one of those places. We made some great memories here and would absolutely stay again the next time we’re in Nashville!

      Rural Hill Farm

      Shake out

We came here for our shake out of our new trailer as it’s only about 20 min from home and we could still go to work. We will probably come back when we just want to “get out of the house” for a few days.

The place is beautiful and if you want to be in the middle of nowhere, this is it! The grounds are easily walkable with a lot of open spaces. Saw a lot of wildlife so come in slow so you don’t hit a deer.

Do NOT come in from South Mount Juliet road. The turn onto Couchville Pike is tight for cars, let alone pulling a camper. Come in off of I-840 and you will be fine.

We got decent wifi and I did a video call without lag. Full hookups (50amp)

No on site staff that we saw other than grounds crew.

Horrific Customer Service/Watch out for 14 Day Policy

I called today (a week and a half in advance) for a reservation that I had booked recently. Our driving plans changed and I wanted to cancel and receive a refund. I was informed they have a 14 day policy. Apparently it is their policy, nothing was emailed or texted to me or verbally given. However if I don’t “ask,” it is apparently my problem. Okay touché. And well I realize this may be their policy, 14 days is ridiculous. They offered me a “camp credit and it’s good for 1 year.” 🤣😮‍💨 I told her we live in Arizona. And she says “okay.” Not even effort for a partial refund. Beware of the terrible customer service. This is completely unprofessional.

      Anderson Road Campground

      Sweet spot!

Reserved spot #19 for 1 night. The stay was very peaceful with friendly staff! The site itself was a bit rocky but that should be expected for primitive. A firepit and grill was provided with a less than 20 ft walk to the water through the trees. Would definitely book again for the price and convenience!!🤙

      Anderson Road Campground

      Spacious sites

The grounds are laid out along a loop. The first ten spaces are lake side and have water and power. The rest of the sites are less developed. There is a boat ramp. There is a toilet house in the rustic area and a shower house near the developed sites. There is a dump station. Suburban development along the access road provides convenient retail.

      The Dirtiest Bathrooms

Gorgeous views, rest of the campground was fairly clean. But the bathrooms....it was very evident they hadn't been cleaned in a very long time. All they did was refill toilet paper. There was dirty brown liquid stains dripping off the walls of all restrooms, dead bugs everywhere and even more in the cobwebs in every corner that could easily be swept out daily. Dirty than a gas station bathroom. Because we tent camp I would not stay here again which is unfortunate because the lake views were very pretty.

    Guide to Franklin

Seasonal camping options surround Franklin, Tennessee with sites ranging from basic lakeside areas to full-service resorts, all within a 45-minute drive. The region sits in the Highland Rim of Middle Tennessee with elevation between 600-700 feet, creating moderate valleys and rolling terrain. During spring and fall, temperature fluctuations can range 30+ degrees from morning to evening, requiring campers to pack layers regardless of season.

    What to do

**Fishing opportunities: At Anderson Road Campground, campers can fish directly from their sites. "This spot was among my favorites...Think how awesome it'd be to fish for supper right from the tent almost," notes reviewer DrDavid P., who appreciated the well-kept grounds and proximity to the water.

**Historical exploration: Visit the Cumberland Presbyterian Church founding site at Montgomery Bell State Park. "We visited here with a church group because it is the founding place of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. It is beautiful, peaceful and serene," writes Alicia B., highlighting the historical significance beyond the natural setting.

**Water recreation: Percy Priest Lake offers multiple water activities accessible from lakeside campsites. One visitor mentioned, "We rented the pontoon and enjoyed the beautiful lake," finding the lake activities more appealing than the nearby Nashville attractions they initially planned to visit.

    What campers like

**Spacious, private sites: Campers consistently praise Montgomery Bell State Park for site spacing. "The state park is absolutely gorgeous. We chose to stay in the tent only camping sites. They are spread out far enough that you don't feel like you are in one another space," explains Lexi S., who gave the campground high marks despite being in the center of an RV loop.

**Concrete pads: Many Franklin area campgrounds feature level concrete pads. At Four Corners RV Resort, one camper noted, "The sites are concrete, level and roomy with full hookups (great water pressure!), new picnic tables and fire rings." This makes setup easier, especially during wet weather conditions.

**Winter camping: The region offers year-round camping with fewer crowds during colder months. A winter camper at Henry Horton State Park shared, "Enjoyable stay. The campground is well maintained with plenty of shade at the sites. The bathrooms are nice and warm in the winter and clean."

    What you should know

**Insect preparation: Mosquitoes and seasonal bugs can be problematic, particularly at lakeside sites. A visitor to Four Corners RV Resort warned, "Highly recommend bringing bug spray for your RV because at night they are all over the door and walls."

**Reservation timing: Campsites near Franklin book quickly, especially lakeside options. At Seven Points, Jennifer W. advised, "Make your reservations early!! Beautiful area lakes, groomed trails, nice hosts."

**Campground crowding: Holiday weekends create significantly more congestion. "We stayed on Memorial Day Weekend and it was completely full. When it's full, it's just TOO full. Too many people, dogs and kids that are too close together," noted Jody A. about Montgomery Bell State Park.

**Site selection: Many campgrounds have variable site quality. At Poole Knobs, a camper observed, "I noticed, however, some of the sites had seriously sloping drives so lots of leveling would have been required." Researching individual sites before booking can significantly improve your experience.

    Tips for camping with families

**Playground access: When camping with children, consider site proximity to play areas. At Montgomery Bell, "With a great pavilion, Vb court, ball diamond, and playground, the far side of the camp is perfect for families. Our fave sites are 1-8, with #1+2 right next to the creek," according to Stæven F.

**Safe swimming areas: Nashville KOA Resort offers structured water recreation for families concerned about lake safety. A recent visitor mentioned, "The amenities are top notch. The pool is quite nice and there are plenty of activities."

**Biking opportunities: Many campgrounds feature paved roads ideal for children learning to bike. One family at Nashville KOA mentioned, "Paved roads the kids loved scootering on," making it easier for families to keep children entertained without structured activities.

**Creek access: Look for sites with shallow water features. At Montgomery Bell, Tammy P. shared, "Children can wade in the creek all day, why parents enjoy sitting outside under all the shade trees. The park has tons of activities and good hiking trails."

    Tips from RVers

**Size restrictions: Several campgrounds have tight sites despite advertising big rig accessibility. At Nashville I-24 Campground, an RVer noted, "Spot was a little tight for our 38 ft 5th wheel. With slides on both sides and our awning out we were close to our neighbor."

**Water pressure variations: RVers report inconsistent water pressure between campgrounds. One camper at Four Corners RV Resort specifically mentioned "great water pressure" while others at different facilities needed pressure regulators.

**Site length accuracy: Site measurements are often precise with minimal overflow space. A visitor to Nashville KOA warned, "Be very cautious of the site lengths. Some are extremely short and I'd say the measurements are nearly exact...It was exactly the length we needed with nearly zero wiggle room."

**Sewer connection placement: Position can vary significantly between sites. An experienced RVer at Nashville I-24 Campground appreciated that their site had "probably the easiest sewer connection I've had at any campground, very low and easy to drain and flush my tanks."
