Campgrounds in the Gadsden region of South Carolina provide access to both developed and primitive camping facilities throughout the area. Longleaf Campground in Congaree National Park offers walk-in tent sites with basic amenities including toilets and trash service, while Poinsett State Park Campground accommodates tents, RVs, and cabin camping with more extensive amenities including electric hookups, showers, and water. The area features a mix of state park facilities and commercial campgrounds, with some offering lakefront locations while others are situated in forested settings that showcase South Carolina's diverse landscapes.

Developed campgrounds in the region typically include a range of facilities from basic to full-service. Most state parks provide electrical and water hookups, with sites at Sesquicentennial State Park and Santee State Park featuring 30-amp connections for RVs alongside tent-friendly areas. A visitor noted, "This state park has a lot to offer from plenty of campsites with all of the traditional amenities, decent restroom facilities and excellent grounds running adjacent to Lake Marion that offers sweeping views of this incredibly beautiful, massive lake." Summer months bring significant heat and humidity, with many campers reporting high mosquito activity, particularly near water bodies. Several campgrounds implement seasonal closures or reduced services during winter months.

Waterfront camping represents a significant draw for visitors to the region, with lakes providing opportunities for fishing, boating, and swimming. Santee State Park features lakeside sites with boat access, while other campgrounds offer varying degrees of water proximity. Many mixed-use campgrounds accommodate both tent and RV camping, though amenities and site quality can differ substantially between locations. A camper observed, "There is very little privacy. You'll basically be seeing all of your neighbors for as far as the eye can see." During peak summer weekends, lakefront campsites typically fill first, with some visitors reporting noise issues at more popular locations. State park campgrounds generally maintain stricter quiet hours than private facilities, making them preferable for those seeking a more tranquil camping experience.

      Taylor's Landing

      Off The Beaten Path

You’ll find this hidden campground VERY far off the beaten trail (and trust me, this trail is as beaten up a road as you’ll find just about anywhere in South Carolina, so you'll want to drive down the lane here SLOW) on the easternmost side of Lake Marion off Ferguson Landing in southeastern part of the great Palmetto State. Given its direct access to Lake Marion, the place gets high marks for its location, but lower marks for overall upkeep and the basic downtrodden nature of the place. You’ll be impressed by the shallow water access and boat launch here, where you’ll have to maneuver around scores of submerged Cypress trees, which makes for quite the enchanting entry to Lake Marion, which if you weren’t aware, offers up 315 miles of shoreline, spans 110,000 square acres or 174 square miles and is the largest lake in South Carolina.

That said, IMHO Taylor’s Landing could use a serious bit of refurbishment and grooming, including the grounds themselves, which were quite overgrown when we stopped by. There is a general store of sorts on-site that sells sundries, ice and most camping needs as well as providing propane tanks for sale. Overall, this place is built more for the RV’ing crowd, although they do offer a few places for tent campers, but don’t offer much in terms of amenities. There was a communal dog area that was pretty worn down right near the area designated for tent camping, which given that most of the dog owners didn’t take their dogs for a walk, the smell emanating from this area was enough for us to decide not to camp here for the night. The entire CG is wide open without any benefit of shade or privacy between sites, although the perimeter has a nice treeline.

Insider’s tip? Here’s a few: (1) If you are a history buff, then you’ll be lured nearby to discover the Sunken Ghost Town of Ferguson, which was once a Congaree Indian Village, which we could access with our kayaks to explore; (2) There is a sandy beachhead that you’ll discover on one of the few trails you’ll come across here at Taylor’s Landing; (3) From an entertainment standpoint, this CG does offer up some interesting creative options during different times of the year – when we were there during the latter part of October, they offered up a ‘Trail of Terror’ for Halloween; (4) If you want to get your hike on, right nearby is Santee Cooper Nature Trail, which makes for some relative easy-to-modest hiking; (5) There’s nothing out in these parts, so if you want to grab a bite to eat, you’ll need to head back to Eutawville where there’s a few mom & pop joints like Tricia’s Café, Sweatman’s BBQ and Casters at Bells; (6) The fishing dock here is solid and offers great opportunity to reel in largemouth bass, catfish, striped bass, crappie and panfish like bluegill; and (7) The best asset here at Taylor's Landing is the fairly EZ to access boat launch that will have you in Lake Marion in no time flat, whether you have a motorized boat or a simple kayak or canoe.

Overall, Taylor's Landing could be a nice place, just in dire need of some upgrades and overall maintenance.

      Happy Camping!

      Broad River Campgound

      Things you should know

When I moved here in October 2025 Tom and Jen were helpful. The lot however hadn’t been cleaned in quite some time. The dead leaves and pine needles were at least 2 inches thick and I was left to clean them by  myself. The amenities are far below substandard and barely work. If you need to shower at the office pray the hot water is working before going. It doesn’t work more than it works. There are always campground wide water and electric issues. The mail carrier delivers all mail to the office and they distribute to mailboxes when they feel like it unless Jen has something against you then she brags to other people in the campground how she is shredding your mail. I moved out in July 2026 and had paid my rent a week early but found a place to move the day after paying and they refused to reimburse the rent. They also raised the 6 times as well as forced all residents to pay for WiFi that was very inadequate to watch tv with so you pay for their WiFi as well as a second WiFi that actually works. I am not telling you to not move or camp here just want you to be informed of what you’ll be dealing with.

      Santee Lakes KOA

      quick stopover

Check in was easy, folks friendly. Water pressure to RV was weak, not sure we had 50 amp electric voltage, cause our battery level was down to 1/3 in am. It was very hot, ran two AC’s, and have electric fridge. Still trying to figure out why, when plugged into power, our battery level is lower then when we plugged into pole.

    Guide to Gadsden

Camping near Gadsden, South Carolina includes both primitive and developed sites across diverse ecosystems ranging from swamp forests to lakefront settings. The region experiences hot, humid summers with temperatures frequently exceeding 90°F from June through August, making spring and fall popular camping seasons. Mosquito activity peaks from May through September, particularly in lowland areas near water.

    What to do

Observe synchronous fireflies: Congaree National Park's Longleaf Campground offers a rare natural phenomenon during late spring. A camper noted, "We camped here to see the synchronous fireflies, and loved our stay! The group site was plenty big enough for all of the children, the hiking was excellent, and the fireflies were one of the most magical things I've ever seen!"

Mountain biking: Several trail systems accommodate bikers of different skill levels. At Poinsett State Park Campground, "This is a good place to stay to mountain bike, there are two trails in Poinsett and Manchester State Forest is nearby." The park offers access to trails that connect with the larger Manchester State Forest system.

Water activities: The region's lakes provide opportunities for paddling, fishing, and swimming in designated areas. Many campgrounds rent boats and kayaks, though rental services may be seasonal. A visitor to Longleaf Campground observed, "Easy walk to visitor center from campground. On the path after crossing the road, we saw the synchronous fireflies!"

    What campers like

Shaded sites: The region's mature forest provides natural cooling during hot months. A camper at Sesquicentennial State Park Campground commented, "Really nice shaded campground and very reasonably priced. Clean bathhouse. Stand was unpacked but level! Staff were friendly and very welcoming."

Wildlife viewing: The area's diverse ecosystems support abundant wildlife year-round. A visitor to Poinsett State Park shared, "The fireflies were very pretty and interesting. We saw other wildlife around the campground too. A lizard during a walk during the day. Many frogs during the rain at night."

Recreational facilities: Many campgrounds offer amenities beyond standard camping. At Sesquicentennial State Park, "I took a group of 8 wild middle schoolers here and we had a blast hiking the trails, boating, and unplugging for a while!" Several parks maintain playgrounds, sports fields, and community pavilions accessible to campers.

    What you should know

Site selection: Campground layouts vary significantly in spacing and privacy. A camper at Cypress View Campground noted, "This is a great campground for anyone who enjoys watersports. Lake Marion is a great place for boating, kayaking, and fishing. Camp sites are mostly level and have water and a variety of electrical hookup options."

Weather impacts: The region's low-lying areas frequently flood during heavy rains. A visitor to Longleaf Campground shared, "About 300 feet from the parking lot so easy to walk into and make trips back to the car or motorcycle in my case. It's lowlands so it floods easily in heavy rains...learned this the hard way!"

Limited supplies: Many campgrounds have minimal on-site supplies. One camper observed, "Overnight guests should be prepared to gather your own wood as none is sold on site. You can also get water from the Visitor Center (which is a better drive than walk if carrying a large or multiple jugs)." Most campgrounds are within 20-30 minutes of grocery stores and camping supplies.

    Tips for camping with families

Bring insect protection: Biting insects can be prevalent, especially during summer months. A camper advised, "Definitely bring a wagon for packing your stuff in and prepare to be eaten alive by deer flies everywhere you go! The heat in June is also pretty bad, so having to go back and forth out to your vehicle to bring your stuff in and out is very difficult."

Site accessibility: Some campgrounds feature significant walking distances to sites. At Weston Lake Recreation Area, "Stayed in a tent at tent site 3. Site was level and clean with water and electric, fire ring, and a picnic table. for $10 per night. There are also primitive tent sites as well for $5 per night. Lots of RV spots too!"

Educational opportunities: Several parks offer junior ranger programs and nature activities. Longleaf Campground provides access to Congaree's educational programs: "Ten site campground, all walk in. Sites 1 and 2 fairly short distance to walk. Campsites are spacious and clean. Pit toilets and solar powered device charger available in parking lot. Easy distance to access visitor center and main trails."

    Tips from RVers

Leveling challenges: Many sites require significant leveling. At Santee Lakes KOA, "We stayed at Santee Lake in a 37' travel trailer. Sites were tight for a rig that big but we made it work. Our site was level, others were definitely not."

Maneuverability: Some parks have tight access roads and limited turn space. An RVer at Poinsett State Park warned, "Long RVs and trailers may have trouble with the trees and turns of the campground," while another noted, "The park road is very narrow and uneven with lots of large pot holes. The road to the campground is a little better, but also very narrow."

Service availability: Hookups vary widely between parks. A visitor to Weston Lake reported, "About 31 RV sites. Onboard Ft. Jackson. Lake views. Boat rental available. Summer time swim beach. Spacious sites. No laundry at campground. Closest is about 3 miles away. Entrance road is really rough."
