Cheraw State Park Campground — Cheraw State Park

    Off season gem!

Didn’t have any expectations of this place since it’s in the middle of nowhere and not many photos. We loved it here. We were lucky enough to catch a great view of Jupiter merging with Saturn last night. Super cheap. We stayed four nights for under $100. 30/50 hookups and water. No sewer but very close dump station in campground. Primitive camping area for tents too. Pull through sites and back in. Spacious sites that feel nicely private surrounded by evergreens which is a nice relief in winter to see trees with leaves. The lake is beautiful. Awesome walking trail that takes you to the other side of the lake where there is a playground. Lots of swings and benches and picnic tables around. Barely anyone here in December, so it feels so nice to be out of our house but not needing masks constantly. When it isn’t off season they have cheap boat rentals. Firewood is $6.50 per bundle.

    Weston Lake Recreation Area

    Nice sites!

Very nice concrete pads; large sites with fire pit, grill, and picnic table. Gravel roads have washed out areas but not terrible. Very open and quiet. Several long-term residents.

    Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort

    convenient to Carowinds, decent campground

Older campground lots of shade.  staff very friendly and helpful. We were really surprised with how much has been invested in Carowinds over the years by Cedar Fair that the campground has been untouched.  Bathrooms/bathhouses were very clean and seem to be the one part of the campground that has been updated.  One section of the campground has been turned into long term camping and many looked like they had been there for years.  campground was quiet other than noise from air traffic as airport is nearby but it was minor.   Campsites have decent space in between each other which is great bc the sites are small in length and you will be parking either beside the rig or sideways in front of it. We stayed in a back-in site and most back-in sites seemed rather level but pull throughs were hit or miss on that aspect.  If you are staying here to go to the park then it is very convenient and has an excellent shuttle that runs frequently and drops you off near the front gate.  Very small camp store that has most of the basics. Campground overall is clean, safe and secure but we expected a little more from theme park campground.  We live nearby and are pass holders at Carowinds so we will likely stay frequently due to the convenience.

    Sesquicentennial State Park Campground

    We will be back!

Even though we had a few rainy days we could see the beauty of this park. Clean heated restrooms in Winter is a bonus. Lots of things to do for all ages. Helpful and friendly staff.

    Woodsmoke Family Campground

    Overnight Stop

Ok for overnight stop but wouldn't be a travel destination. Most sites seem to be long term or permanent sites. Very close to neighbor site, with fire pit being extremely close. Water, Sewer, Power, WiFi

    Chester State Park Campground

    Campsites and views, oh my!

First time staying at Chester State Park. Checked in at the Ranger’s station with friendly staff and a small store front with ice available. Picked pull through site 16. All 25 of the sites are on mostly level ground. The lake from the campground has a fairly new access via a ADA compliant walkway with lighting leading to swings, benches and Adirondack chairs surrounding a rock fire pit. There are benches facing the lake for sitting and or fishing and a new deck that provide even better views of the lake. The trails are well marked and wide that run along the lake edge. There is fishing, kayaks and canoes at the boat dock for rent and to our children’s disappointment no swimming in the lake. The other side of the park has the boat dock, playgrounds for the kiddos and plenty of grassy areas and picnic tables for sitting by the lake. Also there is a professional disc golf course on site. Last but not least the bathhouse is up to date, clean and well stocked.

    Sesquicentennial State Park Campground

    Needs improvements

Not a big rig friendly area. Our site was 30 amp, no sewer. I backed in the way I was told to and realized our water and electric were on the curb side. Had I known this ahead of time, I could have maybe pulled in another way. The service from another site was less than 3 feet from my power inlet to the camper. I called to make sure it would be ok to plug in there and they said no, even though no one used that site. The bathhouse was well below standards and really just unusable. I’ll pick another place if I’m ever in the area again.

    Crown Cove RV Park

    Keep Driving!

Subpar; seems to cater to long term residents. For the 3 pages of rules and regulations I was expecting a pristine campground; what we found was a half paved parking lot and our lot was on a hill side which made using our full hookups going up hill. No fire pit! Must provide ur own, rules state belongings must be 3ft away from away from neighboring sites which is almost impossible with how close sites are. Pass it up! Keep Driving! Would have given less than one star if possible

Guide to Kershaw

Kershaw, South Carolina camping options extend beyond the town limits with access to several natural areas within a 30-mile radius. The region's mild winters and humid summers make year-round camping possible, though summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F with high humidity. Local campgrounds operate in a mix of piney woods and lakefront settings typical of the Carolina Sandhills ecological region.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: At Wateree Lake RV Park & Marina, the lake access provides excellent fishing conditions. "This is a park on the East side of Lake Wateree. Not far off l-77. The beach area is super nice to spend a day on the water with your family," notes Jake, who visited in August 2021.

Hiking trails: Local state parks offer various trail systems through Carolina woodlands. The Cane Creek Park trail system connects camping areas with day-use facilities. As Emily B. describes, "Beautiful place to camp, hike, and kayak! A few of the trails are right on the lake and the dogs love to hop in and cool off."

Paddling: Multiple campgrounds provide water access for non-motorized boats. "I load up my kayak once a month or so and paddle around the lake for hours," shares Emily from Cane Creek Park. The calm waters of Lake Wateree are particularly suitable for morning paddling before afternoon winds pick up.

What campers like

Security features: Campers appreciate safety measures at rv campgrounds near Kershaw, South Carolina. "The owners are trying hard to improve the park. They have a security gate to keep passers by out," notes Charles F. about his stay at Wateree Lake RV Park & Marina.

Well-maintained facilities: Lee State Park Campground receives consistent praise for upkeep. "Bath house were clean and well maintained. Enjoyed my stay," reports Mitch M. after camping there in June 2022. Several campgrounds in the region undergo regular improvements to enhance visitor experience.

Spacious sites: Several campgrounds offer varied camping environments. "This location has 2 RV lots. Riverside is heavily wooded which provides a ton of shade on the hot summer days. Taylor Creek is newer with less trees providing lots of open space and great for Solar regeneration," explains Chad L. at Wateree Lake RV Park.

What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Summer camping around Kershaw brings intense heat and insects. The equestrian facilities at Andrew Jackson State Park Campground impact the camping experience seasonally. "This park is an equestrian park so you will most likely encounter flies during the warmer months," warns Eddie after an April 2021 visit to Lee State Park.

Site challenges: Uneven terrain affects some camping spots in the region. Rachel R. notes about Andrew Jackson State Park: "We stayed on site 16 right on the lake. Beautiful views. Our site was very steep, so took a lot to get level, but it was ok."

Road conditions: Access roads vary in quality throughout Kershaw area campgrounds. As Christina mentioned after visiting Lee State Park: "Rough 'roads' inside park with big ruts that filled with rain." During rainy periods, temporary flooding can affect low-lying access points.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Free or low-cost recreation options exist throughout Kershaw area campgrounds. At Cane Creek Park, Sarah B. shares, "Holidays usually have some activities for kids. The mini golf is free and a blast. The swim area is only open on Saturdays or you can drive to the day use side and be over there."

Historical attractions: Several campgrounds incorporate educational elements. "There is a museum and is perfect for kids," notes Kevin T. about Andrew Jackson State Park, making it suitable for combining outdoor recreation with learning opportunities.

Swimming options: Lake access varies across campgrounds with different safety provisions. Jake mentions Wateree Lake RV Park: "The beach area is super nice to spend a day on the water with your family." Designated swimming areas typically operate during summer months with limited or no lifeguard supervision.

Tips from RVers

Wi-Fi considerations: Internet connectivity varies significantly at rv campgrounds in Kershaw, South Carolina. As Charles F. notes about Wateree Lake RV Park: "Also had better than average/strong Wi-Fi!" This makes it suitable for remote workers needing consistent connectivity.

Site selection for size constraints: Some parks have limitations for larger vehicles. Julie P. mentions about Andrew Jackson State Park: "It is a great campground but tight fit for our 30 foot camper." Travelers with larger rigs should call ahead to confirm space availability.

New development options: The Standing Pines RV Resort & Campground offers 109 sites with modern hookups but recently completed construction. Ashley D. notes in April 2025: "The dump trucks and heavy equipment just pulled out a couple weeks ago, so the campground looks like a construction zone a little bit still." Newer facilities may offer better hookups but could lack mature landscaping.
