State parks and public lands surrounding Waterville, Pennsylvania offer diverse tent camping options for outdoor enthusiasts. Hibernia County Park, located about 75 miles southeast of Waterville, provides primitive tent camping with two distinct loops: Lake Loop for group tenters and the more secluded Fiddler's Loop. Deep Creek Campground at Green Lane Park, situated approximately 90 miles east of Waterville, offers tent-only camping from April through October. For those seeking walk-in tent sites, Goshen Pond in Wharton State Forest (New Jersey) provides secluded tent camping with sites nestled among pine trees.

Most tent campsites in the region feature basic amenities with varying levels of accessibility. Hibernia County Park operates primarily on weekends during camping season at $15 per night, with sites set on grass surfaces and minimal facilities. Each site includes a fire ring with built-in grill and picnic table, but no hookups. Potable water is available from spigots near bathroom facilities, though locations can be limited. Walk-in tent sites at Fort Washington State Park require carrying gear past a locked gate, where campers find shaded sites with fire rings and scattered water spigots. Primitive tent camping areas generally have vault toilets or pit latrines rather than flush facilities.

Tent campers frequently note the varying levels of privacy between campgrounds. According to reviews, Deep Creek Campground sites "are close to each other with absolutely no privacy," with tent spots "lined up against one another facing a service road." In contrast, Hibernia County Park receives praise for its "heavily wooded" sites that create a quiet, secluded atmosphere. One visitor reported that Goshen Pond's walk-in tent sites offer greater tranquility since "you don't hear as many cars coming and going and driving past your site all the time." Backcountry tent camping options like Lower Forge in Wharton State Forest require hiking 5-7 miles to reach the sites, but reward tent campers with riverside locations and greater solitude, particularly on weekdays when fewer groups are present.

Washington Crossing State Park - TEMP CLOSED FOR 2024

      Revolutionary History near Delaware River

Nestled along the picturesque Delaware River in beautiful Bucks County, Washington Crossing Historic Park is one of those destinations where American history practically jumps out from behind every tree. This sprawling, beautifully preserved historic park commemorates George Washington's daring Christmas night crossing of the Delaware in 1776, with charming colonial buildings, expansive green spaces, shaded walking paths and lovely riverfront scenery. Divided into Upper and Lower sections, the park offers plenty to explore, from historic homesteads and interpretive exhibits to scenic picnic areas and the impressive Bowman's Hill Tower. Unfortunately, while the park delivers a wonderful outdoor experience, traditional overnight camping isn't part of the equation unless your a Boy Scout or accompanying one of their troops.

HIGHLIGHTS: (1) Spectacular Revolutionary War history at the very site of Washington's legendary Delaware River crossing; (2) Beautifully maintained grounds featuring mature trees, open lawns and scenic riverfront views; (3) Fascinating colonial-era buildings, historic demonstrations and educational exhibits that bring America's founding history to life; (4) Wonderful recreational opportunities, including walking, cycling, fishing, kayaking and picnicking; and (5) Convenient proximity to charming New Hope, the Delaware Canal towpath and Bowman's Hill Tower, offering plenty of opportunities to extend your adventure.

LOWLIGHTS: (1) No conventional public tent or RV camping, with overnight group camping restricted to organized Scout groups by prior arrangement; (2) No dedicated RV campsites, electrical hookups, water connections or dump station; (3) Park grounds generally close at sunset, limiting opportunities to linger into the evening; (4) Some historic buildings and attractions require admission fees or operate on limited schedules; and (5) Periodic restoration projects and special events can restrict access to certain areas, while the historic Washington Crossing Bridge's three-ton weight limit makes it unsuitable for larger RVs.

      Happy Camping!

      Country Acres Campground

      Lovely campground!

Country Acres is a lovely, well maintained campground. Sites are level and bath house facilities clean and modern. Friendly staff in the office. Dog friendly. Local to all the Lancaster attractions. A complimentary farmland tour is offered by bus and it was great. They take you out into an area of Amish farms and shops and make a stop at 2 of these. The fresh Amish pretzels are amazing!

      Old Mill Stream Campground

      Never Again

The advertisements for Olde Mill Campground were disingenuous. The campsite was 20 yards from a roller coaster. The NOISE of the roller coaster and children on it screaming was as relentless and unnerving as any train we have ever slept near. There was no quiet until almost midnight. The “pull-through” site left my truck almost in the road and our 25’ Airstream slightly over the road on the backside. The site was not level. The sites were close enough to hear a neighbor’s snoring.

      Pine Barrens New Jersey

This campground is part of the Wharton State Forest and has several campgrounds in the area. Great wooded sites right on a lake. Pretty good separation between sites with good tree separation between sites. Some road noise not overly affecting site.

      Beacon Hill Camping

      Great location

We stayed here to go to the Hershey RV show—about 55 min drive. Right in the center of Amish country. Campground is adults only. It was very clean. The bathrooms were very clean with great water pressure. The roads are tight for getting into sites. Site 5 was not level side to side. We met great people there.

      Tohickon Family Campground

      Simple, peaceful FHU

We stayed just a couple nights here on our way north. The camp host was helpful before our stay and during check-in. Our site was pretty isolated from the others, so it was very quiet (no complaints here). There is a decent mix of sunny sites by the river and shady sites under the trees. The weather was perfect mid September. There wasn't anything spectacular for me, but it was a good experience and it was a nice taste of fall PA scenery. Beware that the roads are tight for a big rig. Side note, it did seem like most campers lived there.

      Country Acres Campground

      Excellent But.

The campground is in excellent condition. The facilities are top notch. The excellence and care of the campground is evident. The 4 stars is only due to the road noise and many of the sites are on top of each other. You feel like your neighbor is at your camp fire.

      Beautiful campground, loud campers

Beautiful campground but made the mistake of going on a holiday weekend, the campgrounds next to us were screaming and blasting music all day and throughout the night so we ended up leaving early. A beautiful campground when there aren’t noisy capers ruining it.

    Guide to Waterville

Tent campsites near Waterville, Pennsylvania range from walk-in sites with moderate privacy to more primitive backcountry options. Most campgrounds operate seasonally from April through October, with weekends filling quickly during summer months. Sites typically cost $15-20 per night, with group sites available at several parks for larger gatherings.

    What to do

Hiking opportunities: At Ridley Creek State Park, visitors can access multiple well-maintained trails. "Easy hike. We found a lot of really unique sites around the park. Will keep going back," notes Andrea R. The park features trails suitable for all skill levels.

Creek exploration: Evansburg State Park offers creek hiking and horseback riding trails. According to Meg F., "Great place to creek hike, nice for horses, we did get a lot of ticks, but not deer ticks, thankfully." The park also provides fishing opportunities in its small running creek.

Water activities: For those seeking the best tent camping near Waterville, Pennsylvania with water access, multiple options exist. At Tinicum Island, accessible only by watercraft, "A great place to stay if you have a watercraft," explains Bobby S. This boat-in only campground provides a unique camping experience for those with kayaks or canoes.

Winter recreation: Several parks maintain cross-country skiing trails for winter use. Fort Washington State Park offers "sledding area and cross-country skiing trails," making it a year-round destination for outdoor enthusiasts when not camping during the primary season.

    What campers like

Secluded tent sites: For those seeking tent camping options near Waterville with privacy, several parks offer more isolated sites. "Fiddler's loop is where we always camp... It's quiet, it's heavily wooded," explains Jennifer S. about Hibernia County Park.

Walk-in camping experience: Many campers prefer the walk-in tent sites for reduced vehicle noise. At Batona Campground, "The entire campground is fairly shaded by the pines, and the ground is flat throughout. The back of the campground backs up to a beautiful creek/swamp," reports Brittany L.

Kid-friendly amenities: At Washington Crossing State Park, families find accessible recreation. "It is consistently clean, great for riding bikes and taking pets for a walk and children for a stroll PLUS it is significant historically," notes Doreen C. The park provides historical context alongside outdoor recreation.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Several parks offer excellent bird watching. Fort Washington State Park features "an Observation Deck" where visitors can view "Dark-eyed Junco, Common Loon, Blue Heron, Osprey, Cooper's Hawk, Bald Eagles" among many others according to visitor reports.

    What you should know

Site spacing varies significantly: Privacy between tent sites differs greatly between campgrounds. At Green Lane Park, "The sites are large but there is NO privacy. The sites are lined up next to each other along the campground driveway and there are absolutely no trees or shrubs between them," explains Jen. Consider this when selecting a campground.

Seasonal facilities: Many campgrounds have limited water access during colder months. "A water pump provides fresh water but is not available in the winter," notes Trip Over Life about Batona Campground. Check facility availability before planning off-season trips.

Wildlife awareness: Campers should practice proper food storage. "Bears frequent this campground so be bear aware and practice proper food storage," advises Trip Over Life about Batona Campground in Wharton State Forest.

Road conditions: Some campgrounds have challenging access roads. "The road into the campground is about 1 mile of loose sand. It can be accessed by a standard vehicle," reports Meghan G. about Batona Campground. Small cars may struggle on unpaved roads after heavy rain.

    Tips for camping with families

First-time camper friendly sites: Some areas specifically cater to newcomers. "This place is great for first time campers," shares David K. about Ridley Creek State Park. "They have a nice open field with two sites and two fire pits. They also have a tone of trails to hike on."

Dedicated children's areas: Goshen Pond at Wharton State Forest offers family-friendly amenities. "It's also a 5 minute drive from Atsion lake, a great place for kayaking and swimming," explains Anna D., providing options for families with varied interests.

Easy lake access: Families appreciate dedicated fishing areas for younger anglers. "Great children's pond for 12 and under. Brandywine creek and Chambers Lake are there too. Great playground," shares John Z. about Hibernia County Park, noting the $15 per night rate.

Camp location selection: For families concerned about noise, position matters. "Our site was very quiet, but a lot of the sites are close together without any barriers, so if the campground got crowded it wouldn't be very private," advises Anna D. about Goshen Pond Campground.

    Tips from RVers

Site limitations: Most tent camping areas near Waterville have restrictions on RV size. At Alverthorpe Private Park, "this is not a spot for RVs or 5th Wheelers" according to Stuart K. Many campgrounds can only accommodate small trailers or pop-ups.

Hookup availability: Electric service varies by park. Hibernia County Park offers "No hookups" according to John Z., while other parks may provide limited electric at certain sites. Research utilities before arrival.

Leveling requirements: Prepare for uneven terrain at many campgrounds. Sites at Hibernia "aren't level, but nothing a little creative positioning can't fix," explains Jennifer S., who camps in a 28-foot fifth wheel.

Access road challenges: Larger rigs face particular challenges. "The unpaved road into the site is narrow and tree lined. A larger RV would not fit," notes Meghan G. about Batona Campground. Call ahead to confirm accessibility for your specific vehicle.
