Bodine Field — Wharton State Forest

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Sandy and open, Bodine Field sits within Wharton State Forest along the Wading River, one of several designated camping areas managed by the Division of Parks and Forestry in this stretch of the New Jersey Pinelands. The layout is a broad, largely exposed field with a cluster of trees near the center. Sites run close together in most sections, though group sites give more breathing room. Access is straightforward by car, but the turnoff is easy to miss since signage faces only one direction.

Water access is one of the campground's defining features. The Wading River runs directly through the site, giving paddlers a put-in point and swimmers a place to cool off. The water carries the characteristic tea-brown color of cedar-tinted Pinelands streams. Dan M. describes being "right next to the wading river/creek with that amazing cedar water," and notes that Harrisville Pond, a short drive away, holds pickerel and has a trail circling its perimeter.

Noise levels vary considerably depending on when you visit. Weekday and off-season stays tend to be noticeably quieter. Weekends draw larger groups, including organized youth outings, which reviewers flag as a source of significant noise. Amenities are basic: potable water, composting outhouses, and seasonal firewood. No showers are on-site, though an outdoor shower at a nearby general store has been noted by past visitors. Godfrey Bridge is a comparable alternative within the same forest for those who want similar access with different site spacing.

Reservations are available and worth making for weekend stays between May and September, when the campground fills quickly.

Campers regularly cited the rustic, remote setting with river access as appealing. Several reviews noted issues with basic facilities and close site spacing, while many mentioned weekend crowding affects the otherwise peaceful atmosphere.

Peaceful in the off-season or during the week

During the off season is in and during the week, it’s very peaceful and awesome place to be. During the weekend it’s very populated and tends to be pretty noisy. Potable water is available along with a couple Porta potties. Creek access, if you wanted to go kayaking.

Pine Barrens Remote site

Very open basically sandy field with a handful of trees in the middle, group sites available. You’re right next to the wading river/creek with that amazing cedar water. As well as a quick drive Harrisville Pond which mine as well be a lake. Good fishing for pickerel as well as a decent trail that goes around the entire pond.

Good campground

Left Godfrey bridge CG for this one due to ticks and had no issues. Very beautiful and good mix of open and secluded sites.

Typical, Well maintained campsite in Wharton State Forest

Bodine Field is one of several camping locations within Wharton State Forest.

I am writing this review over a year after our stay so forgive me if the details are lacking.

We set in for an overnight stay in early April 2022.  My daughter was scheduled to have major back surgery in May which effectively shut down out summer camping options for 2022.

Once we arrived at the site we quickly realized we were some of the only brave souls that chose to be outdoors in early April.  It was cold and rainy the entire day and did not get better when the evening arrived.

We had a great time despite the cold and the rain.   I would highly recommend this campsite location!

Very rustic and secluded

Very rustic and secluded, no showers/running water. Outhouses all around the campground. Most of the campsites are kind of on top of each other besides a few and most of the group sites. Best during the week when not very many campers/ groups are around.

Stay home, it’ll be quieter

Beautiful remote location w minimal amenities but 3 boy scout troops of screaming children didn’t make it enjoyable.

Fun group site

Originally it was very hard to first locate the site, I believe it is on google maps since we went last, the welcome center will also give you coordinates to get there. The turn off is only labeled in one direction so keep an eye on both sides of the signs. The campsites are semi close together. Very sandy area. There is a little river area within the site which is fun. The composting outhouse toilets are not great. Overall was a fun weekend trip. Outdoor shower at a general store down the road.
