    Wayne County Fairgrounds RV Park

    Typical Fairgrounds Campground

This is a typical fairground campground with open grassy areas for campsites surrounded by barns and tracks. The fairgrounds is located just off I-94 which makes for easy entrance and exit to the campground, but, means there is lots of road noise. Close by are plenty of stores, restaurants, gas stations, etc. In fact, there is a gap in the fence that runs around the fairgrounds allowing you to walk to a Walmart, McDonalds, Dunkin Donuts, and more.

We arrived without a reservation and the women in the office was very helpful providing a map with all available sites during our stay and letting us choose which one we wanted. One of the first things you notice is that a number of people are here long-term so we went to the back area hoping it would be quieter and less crowded. A number of the campsites are “buddy” sites meaning your patio opens to your neighbors so be careful which one you pick. This is pretty undesirable when the neighbor is a total stranger so we chose a site where we didn’t have anyone next to us.

They offer 50 amp full hook-up sites, 50 amp/water, and 30 amp/water sites with pull-thru and back-in options. There is a dump station located in the middle of the park which is easy to get to. The roads are wide and a lack of trees makes this campground accessible for any size RV. The sites are level but some lack grassy making the patio pretty dusty or muddy. Unfortunately, where we were was pretty muddy just after a light rain. This campground works best for RV’s and not tents. For tenters there is a designated section that is set in a corner of the park with large trees for shade but not much privacy between you and others. A water spigot is in the tent area and there was one picnic table. The camp office sells firewood but we only saw two fire pits in the whole park. Be aware that noise from the interstate and nearby train tracks may make for a restless night. Bathrooms are centrally located in the campground and were old and tired but relatively clean. On-site laundry is available.

Apparently, management is having some issues with campers not obeying some of the rules. One of the sad things about this campground is that campers have to be reminded to clean up after their dogs. Apparently, it is such an issue that we got a letter stating that if you don’t pick up your dogs poop you would be asked to leave. How sad is that? There is free WiFi which worked pretty well. Upon checking in, we had to sign a piece of paper stating that we would not download copyrighted material or stream movies or we would be asked to leave.

My favorite aspect of this campground is that they had a community garden that you were welcome to pick from. We got tomatoes, Swiss chard, peppers, broccoli, and more. Overall, this campground was fine for the few nights we were here and close to the attractions we wanted to visit. We never felt unsafe even though it was close to major cities. We chose this campground because we wanted to go to Ann Arbor and Dearborn and it was a very convenient location.

    Pros:

    ·        Good location if you want to visit Ann Arbor and Dearborn

    ·        Close to interstate for easy access

    ·        Long, level sites that will fit any RV

    ·        Community garden you can pick from vegetables

    ·        Stores and restaurants are nearby (some within walking distance)

    Cons:

    ·        Lots of road noise from I-94

    ·        No trees for shade or privacy

    ·        Would not recommend for tent camping

    ·        Many campers are long-term

    ·        “Buddy” campsites with patios facing each other

    Toledo East-Stony Ridge KOA

    Small basic campground near Toledo

Our site was $59.95 a night.

We were in Site# 504. We had Full hook- up with a gravel pull-through.
We travel towing a 14 foot trailer and were able to fit both in our pull through site along with my jeep. The site was easy to level. We were charged $25 additional for my jeep since we were towing the trailer. We also were charged $10 because we arrived at 1:25 PM and check-in is at 2 PM. The park was close to empty so arriving early was not an inconvenience. We drove ourselves to our spot (no escort).

Our site was shaded with lots of trees. This was a smaller lot with our neighbors fairly close.

The lot comes with a concrete patio with picnic table and fire ring. They sell wood for $6 a bundle.

There is free WiFi, although not strong. They offer Cable TV and there are many channels.

There is not a community outdoor kitchen or community fire pit.

They pickup your garbage at your site daily before noon.

You are allowed to ride personal golf carts. They do not provide golf cart rentals. There is really not a need to have a Golf cart because it is a smaller campground.

They do have a Swimming pool but it is currently closed due to maintenance (although it just looked closed- no signs of maintenance being done).

There is a Playground. They also offer horseshoes, corn hole, giant jinga.

They have a basic general store. There are not scheduled activities for kids.

There is not a snack bar/restaurant on site.

The streets are gravel so not great for riding bikes. This is an RV park with tent camping and cabins to rent.

They have one shower house. The shower house has individual bathrooms with your own sink, shower, toilet. These are kept very clean.

There is a laundry facility. It is a cash only facility, but they have a change machine. There are approximately 4 washers and 4 dryers. It is approximately $2.50 to wash and $2.50 to dry a load.

They have a small fenced in dog park.

There isn’t tons to doin the actual city of Perryville. But Toledo is a 20 minute drive.

    Nice Park

Nice park for full timers. Large spots to accommodate big rigs and kids. Full hook ups. Cell service great with Verizon hotspot (22u, 20d, 38ms and AT&T cell(27d, 20u, 27ms). Playgrounds everywhere for the kids. Giant dog park and ponds. Pool was closed. Just needs more grass. Our spot was really patchy and resulted in a lot of mud.

Great campground with polite and helpful staff. Don’t pass this one up.

    Sterling State Park Campground

    Travel Trailers

This park will accommodate any size travel trailer? Fifth wheel camper of any kind, the pull throughs are huge. The park is enormous with lots of fishing activities. Great water, the only downfall is there's no shade. Showers and restrooms are updated and always clean.

    Ted Ranch Campground

No thrills, largely rustic, family oriented, friendly

This campground is pretty rustic with water and electricity at some sites, no showers or restrooms, a dump station for one at a time, Porta potties scattered around, small beach, small boat launch, mostly appears to be seasonal sites without sewer or rustic sites. Some but not a lot of shade, rolling fields being made into smaller sized sites. Dogs and dogs pens are allowed, and they do not appear to have parents who are attentive or keep them from barking. Friendly staff and family of four owners.

    Great spot!

Wonderful views from site 117. We booked the last spot of the night. It was an easy pull through with water, electric, and sewer hookup. You are right across from some good walking trails and walking distance to the beach. Lots of electric scooters, dogs, and bikes around.

Guide to Berkey

The Toledo area offers distinct camping options within a 25-mile radius of Berkey, Ohio. Summer temperatures average 80-85°F during peak camping months with potential thunderstorms. The flat terrain around Lake Erie creates accessible camping conditions for visitors seeking RV sites near Berkey, Ohio, with several areas providing lake access and shaded woodland sites.

What to do

Nature trails and wildlife viewing: White Oak Campground has multiple interconnected trails running through the Oak Openings region. "I camped at this campground after completing the 15.5 mile Scout Trail loop (aka 'Hiking Trail' and Yellow trail) that runs through Oak Openings. I was able to park my car here in the morning, hop on the trail (which runs right through the campground), and return later in the day," reports one camper at White Oak Campground.

Swimming and fishing: Multiple lakes offer water recreation from April through October. "The kids said the lake was getting a little more fishy and less swim friendly but I wasn't in it this time to verify," notes a return visitor to Big Sandy Campground, which features two lakes - one primarily for swimming and another for fishing.

Farm animals and nearby attractions: Some campgrounds provide unique experiences with neighboring farms. "There was a farm with goats next door and I loved watching the animals," mentions a camper who stayed at Moscow Maples RV Park, noting the rural setting enhanced their camping experience despite being close to roadways.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Bathroom cleanliness ranks high in camper satisfaction. "Bathhouse was very clean. Everything well kept up. We enjoyed our couple days here! Wifi on site," shares one reviewer at Harbortown RV Resort, which maintains well-kept facilities despite high visitor traffic during peak season.

Kid-friendly amenities: Families appreciate campgrounds with dedicated recreational areas. "This campground has everything! Go carts, playground, disc golf, pool, ext... Just a one night stay to visit a friend. If you have kids it is perfect! Staff was nice and very helpful," notes a camper about Harbortown RV Resort.

Free campsite extras: White Oak Campground receives praise for its unusual amenities. "The firewood is free, which is amazing. There is also a dish washing station near the restrooms, with a huge sink and hot water," writes a camper who appreciated these unexpected benefits at no additional cost.

What you should know

Seasonal operation: Most RV sites near Berkey operate from April through October. "Sites are open from April through October," notes a visitor at Big Sandy Campground, making advance planning essential for camping in this region.

Road and airplane noise: Some campgrounds experience transportation noise. "There is a little road noise and the occasional airplane that flies overhead but overall I highly recommend this site if you're in the area or passing through," advises a camper at White Oak Campground.

Service plaza convenience: Overnight RV parking offers practical stops for travelers. "Simplicity at its finest. Highway stop is open 24 hrs so you have food and bathrooms all night. Everything is bright, nice and clean and feels very safe. Free overnight stay allowed and for extra $20 you can get electricity," explains a visitor to Blue Heron Ohio Turnpike RV Lot.

Tips for camping with families

Look for multi-activity campgrounds: Families benefit from diverse recreation options. "Nice campground- clean with many pull through sites. Nice size pool with enough lounge chairs. Sites feel a bit small but still very nice. Right next to camping is go karts, putt putt and arcade. We had a blast!" shares a parent who stayed at Harbortown RV Resort with their family.

Check for holiday activities: Some campgrounds offer special weekend events. "We've been here a few times. Very close to our house just a nice little getaway. We enjoyed the Halloween weekends. We decorate big and enjoyed other decorations as well!" reports a regular visitor to Detroit/Ann Arbor KOA.

Consider site spacing: Proximity to other campers affects family comfort. "The sites were grassy and mostly level. Trees added shade throughout," notes a visitor to Moscow Maples RV Park, highlighting the importance of adequate space between sites when camping with children.

Tips from RVers

Site surfaces matter: RV campers should check site composition. "RV site is paved with electric hookup and water hook up on site. Waste dump on RV site as well," explains a camper at Military Park Camp Perry Lodging and RV Park, where paved sites reduce leveling challenges.

Monitor seasonal ground conditions: Spring camping may encounter wet conditions. "When it rains several campsites get very wet! There are a lot of trees so some of lots have no grass," warns a camper at Detroit/Ann Arbor KOA, suggesting site selection becomes critical after rainfall.

Dump station locations: Travelers need access to sanitation facilities. "For what it is it is a nice safe break with a potable water station and a dump station right there," notes a visitor to Indian Meadow Ohio Turnpike RV Lot, highlighting the practical amenities available at service plazas.
