Best Campgrounds near Batavia, NY

Batavia, New York sits within proximity to several state parks and private campgrounds offering varied camping experiences throughout western New York. Letchworth State Park Campground, known as the "Grand Canyon of the East," provides tent sites, RV hookups, and cabins approximately 25 miles south of Batavia. Darien Lakes State Park Campground, just 10 miles southwest, features both electric and non-electric sites with access to a small lake. Privately-owned options include Southwoods RV Resort in Byron, offering full hookup sites with 50-amp service, and Cherry Hill Campground in Darien Center with more primitive tent camping on grassy sites. The camping season in western New York typically runs from early May through mid-October, with most state parks and private campgrounds closing during winter months. Reservations are strongly recommended, especially for summer weekends and holiday periods when facilities reach capacity. State park campgrounds like Letchworth and Darien Lakes require advance bookings through the New York State Parks reservation system, while private campgrounds maintain their own reservation policies. Weather conditions vary significantly by season, with summer temperatures averaging 70-85°F and occasional thunderstorms. Spring and fall camping brings cooler temperatures and fewer crowds but potential for rain. As one visitor noted, "The bathrooms were reasonable but dated. The showers did not look very inviting and although I did not use them, I overheard someone comment they were the worst showers they had ever experienced!"

Campgrounds near Batavia provide varying levels of amenities and natural features. Letchworth State Park consistently receives high ratings for its dramatic gorge views and three major waterfalls along the Genesee River. A camper reported, "The park is stunning and is fit for camping whether you're in a tent, RV or choosing to rent a gorgeous cabin. There are many walking and hiking trails for adventurers of all types." Darien Lakes State Park features a small lake suitable for fishing and non-motorized boating, with hiking trails through wooded areas. Private campgrounds like Southwoods RV Resort offer more resort-style amenities including swimming pools, playgrounds, and organized activities. Sites at most campgrounds provide fire rings, picnic tables, and access to bathhouses with showers. Cell service is generally reliable throughout the region, though may be limited in some areas of the state parks, particularly in deeper valleys or gorges.

We enjoyed this campground. Attendant advised he had a full connect site available and upgraded. Gravel pad farely level. Filled propane while there. They do trash pickup every morning.

    Niagara County Camping Resort

    Niagra County Camping Resort

Arrived late at night to this established site. This is a mixed accommodation campground with established long term residents & short term sites.

Some sites include a table, power access and tire rim for fire-ring. Showers & flushing toilets are near RV sites in back area. Small camp store, swimming pond & fishing pond. Manager, Christine very nice & helpful.

Campground is relatively close to scenic drives along Lake Ontario & Niagra State Park, Niagra Falls.

Ontario County Park at Gannett Hill

    Inexpensive, Peaceful.

I've stayed here on 3 separate occasions, twice in RV 12 and once in RV 6.

I used the 30 AMP hookup and had zero issues.

Beautiful playground for my son to enjoy and meet other kiddos. Deer, chipmunks and rabbits will say hi in the early and late hours.

    Large dumpsters near entrance.

Dump stations are present, but I haven't used them yet.

Potable water is present at a small spigot.

The washrooms facility is very close and speaking for the men's side, it had 2 stalls, 2 urinals, 2 showers, multiple sinks, and a sturdy baby changing station.

Hiking trails with gorgeous views of the valley within a 5 min walk of my campsite.

    Sleepy Hollow Lake Campground

    Kid friendly but Bee Problem

We had a lot of fun here and there’s a lot of activities for kids I would typically give this campsite 5 stars but our only problem was there were bees everywhere. I get some bees are apart of the camping experience and nature but we’ve never ran into this problem elsewhere. They were all over the campground it was very unpleasant and there was a nest under the playground we did advise management of.

Four Mile Creek State Park Campground

    Niagara Falls visit

We stayed here when seeing the falls easy 18 min drive to the falls. One perk we were not aware of was free parking at one of the three New Yark park parking lots with our campground pass. Showers clean and warm. Staff helpful and friendly.

    Hamlin Beach State Park Campground

    Relaxing 2 weeks

The camp store is closed along with no firewood and no laundry.

We stayed for 2 weeks and it was so relaxing. We loved biking through the loops and by the beach at the park. There was live music at the park during the week. The campground has an activity room full of things to do. As a state park, there are a lot of different people with different values, so be ready for the occasional obnoxious family. Our site was secluded and in the pines. We love it here and will definitely do this again!

    Woodstream Campsite

    Rip off

Have to stay at least 2 nights. Employees say one thing. Then boss charges me even though I was told it was okay. Aren't willing to reason with. Also traffic very loud at night

    Stay Bristol Woodlands

    Well maintained and friendly Staff!

Campground is adorable, you can see a lot of other campers, but the spots are spaced out. Showers were nice, didn’t get to try the pool out as it was a quick stopover, but this seems like a fun place to spend some time

Most campgrounds in the region sit between 550-850 feet above sea level, creating moderate humidity levels throughout the camping season. Night temperatures often drop 15-20 degrees below daytime highs, even in summer months.

What to do

Hiking at Devil's Nose: Access the trail system at Hamlin Beach State Park Campground, located 45 miles north of Batavia on Lake Ontario. The park offers multiple trail options including wetland paths. "The park is flanked by a nature trail on the South side and a trail on the north side. The trail on the north side is referred to as the devil's nose. Beautiful sunsets can be seen from that vantage point," notes camper Rino S.

Fishing opportunities: Cast your line at nearby lakes within 30 minutes of Batavia. Darien Lakes State Park Campground provides access to a small fishing lake where sunfish and bass are common catches. As camper Jeremy H. explains, "There are miles of hiking trails, nice 'lakes' to fish and swim in. There is a fairly new Frisbee golf course as well."

Wildlife viewing: Bring binoculars for bird watching around campgrounds that maintain feeders. Cherry Hill Campground prioritizes natural habitats, as one visitor observed: "The grounds are well manicured without looking unnatural, the sites are very spacious, and with a number of wildlife feeders throughout, it was a great place to do a little bird watching/photography."

What campers like

Spacious, private sites: Many campers appreciate the room between sites at certain campgrounds near Batavia. At Hamlin Beach State Park Campground, camper Benjamin C. noted, "The sites in the loop we stayed in had about 75' between driveways, all with varying levels of trees/brush between them, very secluded." This provides a more natural camping experience despite proximity to urban areas.

Theme park access: Families enjoy camping at Six Flags Darien Lake Campground for its convenience to the amusement park. "This campground is great if you're into the theme park. The bathrooms were always easy to find and clean. The staff is always very nice and helpful," shares Hannah B. Most guests stay here specifically to visit the theme park or attend concerts.

Clean facilities: Campers consistently mention well-maintained bathrooms and showers at campgrounds around Batavia. At Sleepy Hollow Lake Campground, visitors note, "Clean bathrooms near the campground store" and appreciate the overall upkeep of the facilities throughout the property.

What you should know

Seasonal operation: Most campgrounds near Batavia operate from early May through mid-October, with specific opening and closing dates varying by location. Letchworth State Park Campground typically opens May 6th and closes October 16th. Several campgrounds offer seasonal sites for those wanting to camp all summer.

Noise levels: Proximity to theme parks and concert venues affects some campgrounds. Laura Nicole A. shares about Six Flags Darien Lake Campground: "People mostly stay here for one of two reason. Because they don't want to drive home drunk from a concert, or they have 14 loud kids that want to be at the amusement park. Both options come with about 2 hours of sleep."

Train noise: Be aware of railroad tracks near certain campgrounds. Donna M. notes about Six Flags Darien Lake Campground: "Was clean and well maintained. There was a train track close to camping." This affects nighttime quiet hours at select locations.

Cell service variations: Mobile reception varies significantly between campgrounds. Wilson W. reports "3 bars Verizon" at Cherry Hill Campground, while others note limited service at Hamlin Beach, where "At&T reception is almost non-existent."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Southwoods RV Resort in Byron offers extensive recreational facilities for children. Hope C. says, "Southwoods is a beautiful campground and accommodates campers of all ages. 2 well kept pools, playgrounds, laundry facilities, mini golf, soccer, basketball."

Theme park package deals: When staying at Six Flags Darien Lake Campground, look for combination ticket packages. Mary H. explains, "Campground fees include admission to the theme park. The sites are very nice and well maintained. There are campers for rent, cabins for rent, tent sites, RV sites and premium RV sites."

Alternative beach options: Find secluded swimming spots by exploring beyond designated beaches. At Hamlin Beach State Park, Benjamin C. advises, "If you want secluded beaches, skip the public beach and head a little West of Area 4, take the sandy path to the water for an amazing hidden grotto."

Scheduled activities: Many campgrounds near Batavia offer organized events throughout the summer. At Darien Lakes State Park, families enjoy disc golf tournaments and nature programs. One camper mentions that "They have many activities like swimming, mini golf, a couple really nice playgrounds, fishing (the kids love getting sunnys)."

Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: For RVers visiting Cherry Hill Campground, choose sites on the eastern end for better shade and reduced road noise. Camper Dan H. explains, "Many sites are separated by hedges, are drive-in sites yet still close to water, restrooms, and shower even a microwave."

Water access considerations: At Hamlin Beach State Park, note the electric-only hookups require planning. Benjamin C. advises, "Sites are electric only but with a 100' hose you can reach a spigot from most any spot to re-fill the camper."

Dump station capacity: During busy weekends, allow extra time for sanitation services. At Southwoods RV Resort, Nancy W. observed, "The campground has lots of amenities like two swimming pools, nice camp store (with lots of food, souvenirs, and gifts). The water pressure and electric were good."

Extended stays: For longer visits, consider weekdays when campgrounds are less crowded. One RVer at Sleepy Hollow Lake notes, "We stayed for 2 weeks and it was so relaxing. We loved biking through the loops and by the beach at the park. We stayed on a weekday, told weekends are busy."
