Pittsburg Area Campground — Pomme de Terre State Park

      Nice secluded spots

Two parks in one. The Hermitage and The Pittsburgh. We chose the 400 loop of Pittsburgh for its secluded spots. Spaces are not stacked on top of each other. You’re in the woods so take bug spray. Level paved lots to choose from. Fire rings and covered picnic tables. Lots of shade.

Pittsburg Area Campground — Pomme de Terre State Park

      Our First Popup Adventure

Our first camping adventure in the popup took us to Pomme de Terre State Park on Father’s Day of 2017. Pomme de Terre State Park is one State Park that is two completely separate campgrounds, split in half by Pomme de Terre lake. When booking pay attention to whether you are on the Hermitage side or the Pittsburgh side. Each campground has it’s own camp store, swim beach, boat launch, and sanitary disposal station.

We have camped three separate times at Pomme de Terre with all three campsites being in the 400 loop on the Pittsburgh side. This loop has been chosen due to its proximity to the bathrooms and the playground, these are key when having a 4-year-old. This loop is located in the woods with nice spacing between sites. Each site comes with a fire ring and covered picnic table. I will warn you that some of the sites on the left when you first pull into the loop are on an incline, so bring plenty of leveling pads with you if you have a trailer. If you are wanting to be close to the water this loop is not the one you will want to reserve. I would look more in the 300 loop, though those sites are gravel in case that is an issue for you, or look at the Hermitage side. The bathroom and shower house located at the entrance to loop 400 are some of the nicest that we have experience while staying in a state park. They are clean and well maintained. Located throughout the loops are vault toilets if you choose a site farther away from the main bathroom.

We enjoy the campground and marina on the Pittsburgh side. The marina is stocked with some camp essentials as well as a café for a quick bite. They also have boats, canoes, kayaks, and paddle boards for rent, for a list a prices here is the Marina’s website www.mofunparks.com. This is one of our son’s favorite stops on the trip, they have a nice selection of ice cream. The size of the marina is not large, and if it is busy the inside can be very cramped. We do prefer the swim beach on the Hermitage side it is located along a peninsula with ample room on busy days, as opposed to the Pittsburgh swim beach that is located in a cove without as much space.

When traveling between the two state parks you will travel through Hermitage, Missouri. They have a Dollar General, gas station, and some restaurants. I cannot speak for the restaurants, but we have used the Dollar General for supplies that did not make the trip. Located at the junction of Hwy 64 and Hwy 64B, just outside of the Pittsburgh side of the park, you will find an old building directly across from White’s Marine Center that is selling camp wood. The person that sells the wood will be out there sometimes, but if they are not, there is drop box mounted to one of the poles to leave money in. I was able to purchase a wheelbarrow load for $8.00, which is a much better deal than the small bundle they sell in the park for $5.00.

Pomme de Terre State Park has become a family favorite campground. We will be making a voyage here every year to continue exploring.

Sever hooks for hanging items for quick access. Made from sturdy material. Set up and take down super easy. We used iron grill with it and found it to be a match. Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area

Nice military campground on the Lake of the Ozarks

The Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area (LORA) is a great destination for camping, boating, swimming, water skiing, fishing and other outdoor activities. The lake is one of the Nation's largest man-made lakes, providing you with over 1150 miles of shoreline to enjoy. LORA welcomes Active Duty Military, Retired Military, members of the National Guard and Reserves, DoD employees with ID cards, family members and Fort Leonard Wood contract employees.  Plenty to do and see here.  Boat rentals, hiking, and others mentioned above.  The LORA Country Store carries ice, beverages, firewood and a small selection of food including snacks, milk, eggs and bread. The store also carries the basic necessities needed for camping and fishing, including fishing licenses.  Can rent a tent site, camper site with full or partial hook ups, cabins 1-3 bedroom, etc.  The marina has boat and jet-ski rentals (pontoons, wave runners, jet ski's, ski boats, fishing boats, pontoons, etc.) that are much more reasonable then other rental places in the area. Area is staffed by on-duty MP's out of Fort Leonard Wood.

      B Berry Farms & Co.

      Quiet and Cozy Campground

My girlfriend and I stayed here during our road-trip through MO. The owners Brandon and Theresa were very accommodating and made sure we had everything we needed. They gave us a tour of the farm when we arrived and let us pick out which camp site we wanted. The camp site had everything we needed including a fire pit, grill, picnic table, water spout and bath room nearby. We enjoyed picking black berries right next to our campsite to have with breakfast in the morning. I highly recommend staying here with your family or significant other!

    Guide to Camdenton

Cabin camping options near Camdenton, Missouri range from rustic to modern with lake proximity. Situated in the Ozark Highlands at approximately 800 feet elevation, this region features dramatic limestone bluffs, dense oak forests, and spring-fed waterways. Winter temperatures average 25-45°F, while summer months reach 75-95°F with high humidity levels.

    What to do

Fishing access: Bennett Spring State Park Campground offers excellent trout fishing opportunities. "One of my fav state parks. Stayed for the weekend. Clean. Comfy. Fishing. Couldn't get any better," notes Katie R. The park manages a trout hatchery with daily fish releases.

Water recreation: Hidden Valley Outfitters provides river activities just 30 minutes from Camdenton. "Great campground for family and friends! Close access to the river and Bennett Springs," writes Joe C. Their outfitting service includes kayak rentals and shuttle service.

Swimming options: Rental cabins often include water access points. Little Niangua Campground features riverside cabins with easy swim access. "Loved camping there and floating down the river! Will continue to camp here in the future!" reports a recent visitor, highlighting the direct water access from cabins.

    What campers like

Year-round availability: Several cabin rental operations maintain winter hours. "We pulled in this weekend to find out they are being completely restored," a visitor noted about Bennett Spring State Park's bathroom facilities, demonstrating ongoing improvements even in off-season months.

Military discount options: Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area offers specialized rates for service members. "Absolutely hidden gem on the lake available for military (active/retired/DAV). Has full hookups, big rig friendly and has a large array of boats you can rent," writes Paul S., highlighting both the discount structure and boat rental availability.

Clean facilities: Cabins generally maintain good cleanliness standards. "Very nice, clean and quiet. We are here in the middle of October waiting for the leaves to turn. Good access to the Lake of the Ozarks," writes Teri H. about Linn Creek KOA, noting its autumn appeal.

    What you should know

Reservation timing: Most cabin rentals require advance booking during peak season (May-September). "Reserve early as it fills up fast!" advises Collette about Bennett Spring State Park, highlighting the competition for prime dates.

Terrain considerations: Many cabin properties feature significant elevation changes. "Spacious and mostly level sites, which is outstanding as this park is on face of a hill," notes Charles A. about Linn Creek KOA's graded sites.

Noise variables: Highway proximity affects some properties. "The noise from the freeway running in front of the resort is unbearable at all hours," reports one Linn Creek KOA visitor, demonstrating the importance of selecting cabin locations away from main roads.

Supply requirements: Mountain Creek Campground cabins require specific preparation. "The cabins don't look like much from the outside, but inside they are wonderful," notes Amanda M., suggesting appearances can be deceiving and visitors should plan based on provided amenity lists.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Multiple campgrounds offer dedicated children's play areas. "The roads are all paved so it made biking for our kids easy and enjoyable. The campsite was spacious and shaded. The kids loved playing in the creek and hiking the trails," shares Amanda R. about Bennett Spring State Park.

Water slide entertainment: Hidden Valley Outfitters provides dedicated kid-friendly water activities. "The camp store is amazing. They have a full menu including pizza for those days that you're too tired to cook," notes Jon L., highlighting the convenience for families.

Quiet hour enforcement: Several cabin areas maintain strict noise policies. "Quiet hours run 10pm-7am which was nice for my young daughters," mentions a Hidden Valley Outfitters visitor, indicating management enforcement of peace during sleeping hours.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection strategies: Cabins vary significantly in layout and positioning. "We stayed in the danceyard camp site with 30 amp electric only and plenty of trees. The newer RV sites have full hookups but no shade," advises Jon L. about Hidden Valley Outfitters, contrasting the different site configurations.

Off-season advantages: Winter cabin rental offers unique experiences. "This is the third time staying here. This time wife and I took our small camper just to get away for the weekend. We stayed in campground one because it is the only one open during the off season," notes Nathan P. about Bennett Spring State Park, highlighting operational seasonality.

Accessibility concerns: Some properties present mobility challenges. "The full hook up area is a big parking lot with no shade! BUT you have great satellite signal!" explains Felicia H. about Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area, pointing out the trade-off between convenience and aesthetics.
