Lake of the Ozarks spans over 54,000 acres with 1,150 miles of shoreline, offering diverse camping conditions across varied elevation changes. Campsites near Camdenton range from established campgrounds with concrete pads to primitive forest locations. Wildlife encounters are common, with several campgrounds reporting regular deer sightings throughout the camping season.
What to do
Fishing opportunities: At Hidden Valley Outfitters, visitors can access the Niangua River directly from the campground. "Great campground for family and friends! Close access to the river and Bennett Springs," notes Joe C. This location offers both river fishing and quick access to trout fishing at the nearby state park.
Wildlife viewing: The wooded areas provide excellent wildlife observation opportunities. At Lake of the Ozarks State Park Campground, campers regularly report wildlife encounters. "Huge beautiful park. A lot of hiking and biking trails. Boat ramp and store in the park. We saw about 20 deer each day," writes Anthony C., highlighting the abundance of wildlife.
River access: Many campgrounds offer direct water access points. At Fiery Fork Conservation Area, "The river access is really amazing. It's a great place to launch a boat from or just to wade in a bit and fish. Fly fishing can be done easily from the bank or just by wading in a bit," according to Amanda.
What campers like
Secluded spots: For those seeking quiet camping near Camdenton, Missouri, several locations offer peaceful environments. "Good campground on the lake. Clean and family friendly. The campground was quiet and it is located in a secluded State Park," notes Danielle B. about Lake of the Ozarks State Park Campground.
Concrete pads: Many RV campers appreciate the level surfaces at Hidden Valley Outfitters. "RV full hookups are great, EZ in EZ setup and EZ out.... Bathhouses are clean and nice," mentions Kent F. The concrete pads provide stability even during rainy conditions.
Off-season tranquility: Pet friendly camping options remain available year-round with fewer crowds during off-peak times. "I was just there during spring break. I was the only tent camper. Maybe 8 RVs or so out of nearly 150 campsites. It was nice and quiet. Beautiful scenery—able to camp with a view of the lake," shares David W. about his experience at Lake of the Ozarks State Park.
What you should know
Weather considerations: Spring camping may require additional preparation. At Bennett Spring State Park Campground, a camper noted, "The water was off until the end of March but luckily the pump near the registration kiosk was on. It was just a bit of a drive to get it. And the bathrooms/shower houses are locked as well."
Cell service limitations: For emergency planning, be aware of connectivity issues. At Fiery Fork Conservation Area, "There is absolutely NO service there which was good to get away, but bad in an emergency. We were able to see some wildlife while staying there as well."
Road conditions: Some campgrounds require navigation on rough roads. "The road down was very sketchy for my 2008 Mazda 3. It's a very simple campground but in a great location near the ozarks," explains Ry M. about access to Fiery Fork Conservation Area.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Osage Beach RV Park offers family-friendly facilities. "Very nice RV park near grocery store and food. Also near the Lake Of the Ozarks State Park. This RV park has everything you'd need. There is a nice pool, games, laundry, playground, propane, supplies and food, full hook ups, cable, restrooms and showers," notes Shannon G.
Biking paths: Paved roads at Bennett Spring State Park Campground allow for safe cycling with children. "Great place to take the family. The roads are all paved so it made biking for our kids easy and enjoyable. The campsite was spacious and shaded. The kids loved playing in the creek and hiking the trails," shares Amanda R.
Beach areas: Some riverside locations offer natural play areas for children. At Fiery Fork, "We decided it would be a nice place to bring our kids since there is quite a bit of 'beach' at the river access for them to play and see nature."
Tips from RVers
Site selection: At Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area, "The campground is set up for all varieties of camping. My 35 ft. Fifth wheel is about max length to make the campground roads. Otherwise, All pads are level asphalt so minimal pad shimming necessary," notes Tadd B. This makes it suitable for pet owners with larger RVs.
Hookup variations: For those requiring full hookups with pets, Linn Creek KOA offers designated sites. "Very nice, clean and quiet. We are here in the middle of October waiting for the leaves to turn. Good access to the Lake of the Ozarks," says Teri H. However, some visitors noted limitations: "The gravel roads around the campsite were very washed out from rain, unlevel, and I was nervous we'd bust up the camper pulling it."
Site privacy: RV sites vary in terms of seclusion. At Osage Beach RV Park, one camper noted, "We were here over Memorial Day weekend and it was still so nice and peaceful. The place was completely full. The spaces were not too close to each other and ours backed to woods."
