We have camped here multiple times in a tent and also in our RV. Grounds have a nice mix of RV spots out in the open as well as some RV and tent spots back in the trees with water and electric only sites. Full hookup sites are only out in the in the open spaces.
Sites are mostly level and are some are a bit tight and close to your neighbors. They have recently added some additional RV spots and some other upgrades as well. Staff is friendly and bathrooms, store, activity room, pool are all seemed to be well maintained.
Make reservations early in the session because things fill up quickly. Great family campground with a lot of young kids running around, riding bikes, and playing and dogs in most campsites. Pool is also available but we haven’t used.
Easy access to Jay Cook State Park. Jay Cook has a lot to offer; a suspended cable walking bridge, great moderate hikes, waterfalls, climbing on rocks, and amazing river views. Great place to stop in for a couple hours or spend the whole day hiking.
Not to far from Duluth and other amazing North Shore locations.
Dump station is conveniently located on your way out of the grounds but can get backed up at the end of a busy weekend and can make it difficult to exit the campground.
Like so many RV / campgrounds this one is also located near to railroad tracks that has several trains that come through day and night.
We’ve camped here at least 3 times, the last in the north group site in July 2017. Biggest drawback is having to buy firewood, not allowed to cut any in the park. Otherwise, it’s clean, lots of nice amenities like fish cleaning building, showers and nice boat ramp. Great Lake to boat on and Zorbas on the lake is fun
I came out of the BWCA near Grand Marais late in the day and so wanted to stop somewhere to camp as I headed south before dark. There were plenty of spots available online at this little park. It was clean and the campsites were fine—could see my neighbors without much tree cover though.
If the weather had been better when I woke up I would have hiked some trails or paddled the lake. Next time!
Overall a great place to stay. We stayed at a campsite with a tent and there was plenty of room for the two of us. If you have a group of people you may want to look into two sites but otherwise plenty of space. The campsites are relatively private with trees between the sites to allow some privacy. There was a well water pump near our site which was very convenient. There was firewood available to purchase as the state park as well.
The shower and bathroom facility was new and very clean. There are multiple private shower rooms which was a nice surprise.
The trails in the park were well maintained and well marked. The trails along the river were very pretty. No trails seemed too strenuous, a fairly easy hike.
—one thing that we found was there was not many places for swimming in the area. The river appeared quite murky when we visited and there were signs for no swimming at the park. It’s quite possible we just didn’t research well enough to find a swimming spot, but we could not find anywhere.
So glad we stayed at this park. Would recommend!
An extremely safe and pleasant location. You can either use the paid campground or stay in the parking lot, say if you had a sprinter travel van or some such thing. Alternatively if you are tent camping there are a couple nearly hidden campsites that you can use for free right by the canoe landing. A large part of the year clean showers are available and are free! although this fact is not publicized and at certain times of the year they are put under code for campground use only. I find that most the time they are open. A bathroom is attached each shower and can be locked from the inside making it great for a couple to use the facilities efficiently together. This is a one-of-a-kind place that does not exist much anymore. Free shower free camping clean bathroom , great walking trails, Great spot to fish. For a stop alongside the highway it has it all.
