Best Campgrounds near Tofte, MN

Camping in the Tofte area of Minnesota encompasses a range of options from established campgrounds to dispersed sites along Lake Superior's North Shore. Superior National Forest provides several camping areas, including Sawbill Lake Campground located about 15 miles northwest of Tofte, which accommodates tents, RVs, and offers cabin rentals. The region includes state parks like Temperance River and Cascade River, providing developed sites with amenities such as showers, drinking water, and electric hookups, while more remote options like Last Creek Kayak Site offer primitive boat-in camping experiences.

Permits and reservations are required for most established campgrounds in the area, with many sites bookable up to six months in advance. The camping season generally runs from May through October, though some campgrounds like Temperance River State Park remain open year-round. Winter camping is available at select locations, including George H. Crosby Manitou State Park. Roads to campgrounds vary from paved highways to rough forest service roads, with some remote sites requiring high-clearance vehicles. Cell phone coverage is limited throughout the region, particularly in backcountry areas. A visitor commented, "Expect a 13 mile gravel road from Tofte. No dump, no water and no electric hookups. There are several clean bathrooms with hand sanitizer and drinking water stations."

Waterfront camping receives consistently high ratings from visitors, with Lake Superior shoreline sites and inland lake access being particularly sought after. Several campgrounds feature hiking trails connecting to the Superior Hiking Trail and Border Route Trail, providing opportunities for day hikes or backpacking trips. Wildlife sightings are common, with visitors reporting moose, fox, and hearing loons at night. Mixed-use campgrounds that accommodate both tent and RV camping are prevalent throughout the area. During peak summer months and fall color season, campgrounds fill quickly. One camper noted, "We fell asleep to the sound of loons every night. This is also black bear country, so it's important to be bear aware; make sure you store food and water properly and bring bear spray while out hiking."

    Sullivan Lake Campground

    Wilderness Campground

This is a campground for small campers only. My 16 foot travel trailer was about the limit for size. Very little access to the lake and river. Overall, this is a primitive site with pit toilets and a pump jack for water.

    Castle Danger

    Great Spot

Very nice n secluded spot, only had one other person stay there on labor day weekend. There are a couple of designated spots with fire rings, some are harder to get to. The road in is kind of rough but my subie handled it fine. The location on the dirt does take you to a persons property but check out Skips review for a detailed location. Overall great spot and close to a superior hiking trailhead

Judge C. R. Magney State Park Campground

    Primitive camping

    Judge Magney State Park, Minnesota

This is a small state park near the shores of Lake Superior. Off Hwy 61, North of Grand Marais. Best known for the Devils Kettle Hike where there's a double waterfall

& one side disappears into a hole. It's very cool!

The campground is very small- only 26 sites. This is primitive camping- no electricity. There's water available. No dump. Dumpsters for trash. The sites are suitable for tents & small trailers, popups, truck campers, camper vans. We did see one larger trailer, but most sites are short.  The road is also very primitive - trees will rip off the air conditioners in your 45 footer!

There's a modern bathroom & shower house with 2 showers in both the men's & women's. Even though we never saw anyone- someone was keeping the bathrooms clean!

They also sell wood at the camp host site.

We were here on a Tuesday thru Thursday. Everyone was respectful of quiet hours & no one was too loud. Most of the sites were full. Not sure about the weekends.

There's 2 loops. The outside loop is close to the highway & that gets loud around 6am until 10pm when it quiets down. There's paths to the bathhouse, which is nice.

The perimeter sites are the best for more privacy. We were in site 11 & I loved it! Site 12 was nice too. I really enjoyed this campground & have to say it was my favorite one on our Minnesota vacation.

    Eckbeck Finland State Forest

    Just fine

I thought the campground itself was nice. It’s on a very busy road tho and I personally thought the sites in the middle were very close together. We also had a group of very rowdy college aged kids across from us that made our stay less enjoyable. If you can bet a site on the outer edge of the campground, it would be great.

    Black Beach Campground

    Tight spaces, expensive

We stayed here for 3 nights, 4 days and while the location is great, the camping was awful. The spots are one on top of each other, so much so that we spent our nights inside the RV because we were so on top of our neighbors. We could hear EVERYTHING, even when in our trailer and our neighbors were in theirs. Very clean facility, but not worth the price and unfortunate setup.

    Ninemile Lake Campground

    Beach on site

Huge site with many trees for our hammocks. The mosquitoes were ravenous but we had a screen tent. The toilets were really clean. It was a delight to have a beach right at our site. This campground is off the beaten path so was extra dark and quiet.

Superior Forest Blackstone Lake Backpack Campsite

    Eaten by mosquitos

This place had so much potential but unfortunately I was not as lucky as the other reviewer. Got absolutely eaten alive by mosquitos the first night, tried to thug it out, and ended up leaving. I had long sleeves / pants and bug spray but it did not stop them. Would not recommend going here in August.
