Bikers and hikers discover direct access to the Cape Cod Rail Trail at Wellfleet Hollow State Campground, where narrow paved roads wind through a wooded landscape formerly known as Paine's Campground. The Massachusetts DCR-managed facility restricts camping to tents and RVs under 35 feet due to tight curves and compact site layouts. Sites cluster close together under a tree canopy, with some requiring walk-in access and separate parking near the entrance.

The campground provides 20-amp electric hookups on many sites, plus water and sewer connections for RVs. Clean restrooms include outdoor showers with hot water and dish-washing sinks. Wild turkeys move through the grounds, and some sites back up to neighboring residential yards. Tom C. notes "It's also walking distance to the secluded Duck Pond which is a gem."

Campers can walk to Duck Pond or bike to nearby Great Pond and Long Pond for swimming. The facility sits within walking distance of Wellfleet's restaurants and art galleries. Site 73 experiences background noise from bathroom exhaust fans during daytime hours. Rates vary significantly between Massachusetts residents and out-of-state visitors.

For those preferring more spacious accommodations, Maurices Campground offers larger sites three miles south.

On March 25, 2021, the MA Legislature established the Wellfleet Hollow State Campground Park Trust Fund to be used for long-term preservation and maintenance of Wellfleet Hollow Campground. Beginning on April 1, all out-of-state campers will incur a $5.00 per night surcharge for camping. The surcharge funds will directly benefit Wellfleet Hollow Campground.

April 1 through Labor Day Monday, the booking window will be open for new inventory at 8 am ET daily. During the off season, inventory opens at 9 am on weekdays and 10 am on weekends.

Campsites at this facility are limited to one tent OR one pop-up, where designated. Parking for one vehicle is available on or near each campsite. We cannot accommodate additional vehicles and appreciate you planning accordingly.

Please note that firewood sales are by credit card only, and effective 2021, the cost of firewood is $7 per bundle. Massachusetts prohibits the transportation of firewood or any wood products into or out of any DCR campground.

**Walk-in Registrations are not permitted. Advance Reservations can be made same day up until 2 pm on date of arrival.**

Directions

Once on Cape Cod, continue on U.S. Route 6 East, toward Provincetown. The campground is about 45 miles from the Sagamore Bridge. Stay on Route 6, past the Orleans rotary. In approximately 10 miles take a right on Old County Road. Old County Road becomes Old Kings Highway. Wellfleet Hollow is about one mile on the right.

Sweet Spot

A quiet campground in mid June - sites are close together but not many people this trip, quiet and friendly neighbors. Right on the rail trail. Wellfleet beaches and glacial kettle ponds don’t require a parking sticker Labor Day- 2nd weekend in June.

Great Pond and Long Pond are both close by and lovely swimming. You can also walk to Duck Pond from the campground.

Site 73 had noise from the bathroom exhaust fan from 7am-10pm- just background drone but I noticed it.

Nice outdoor showers w hot water and clean restrooms with wash sink for dishes.

Wild turkeys moved through camp during my visit.

Tents only - no RVs.

Good Campground

First off, great spot to camp on the Cape for cheap. However, the booking site is a little confusing in terms of if your site will have room for a car. Some don’t and you have to park in the parking lot which can be a haul to your site.

Great Location/Nice Campground

We've been camping at Wellfleet Hollow (formerly Paine's Campground) for close to thirty years.  We love its location in the funky, artsy town of Wellfleet where there are great food options and some of the best beaches on Cape Cod.  It's also walking distance to the secluded Duck Pond which is a gem.  The campsite itself it wonderful with a tree canopy that lets in plenty of light but won't let you be baked with hot sun.  The sites are well spaced so you don't feel too crowded and the terrain is a bit hilly so it's got a nice, rustic feel to it.  At night you can go out to the power lines for some of the best star gazing on the East Coast. It's a short bike ride to the Cape Cod Rail Trail which is wonderful.  The bathroom facilities are much improved too.  The only beef I have is that out of staters have to pay an exorbitant fee relative to people from Massachusetts.  That seems a bit unfriendly especially since we are within the boundaries of the National Seashore roughly speaking.

Newer rustic state campground for tents and small trailers

Formerly Paine's campground, this is now under the Massachusetts DCR. It offers inexpensive, rustic camping on the Cape, though rates are much higher for out-of-state guests than for instate. Many sites are small, some require walk-in, and parking may be separate from the site; in some instances it is across or near the site, and for others it is closer to the park entrance. Under the new ownership they've paved some of the roads, but the roads are narrow and with curves. All of the conditions have led them to limit campers to tents and short trailers/campers only, with length <15' and only 1 unit/vehicle per site. There is 20A electric on a number of the sites. When you read site descriptions, it will indicate 'compact loop' or 'petite site' and those are accurate!

Sites are largely shaded. Some of the sites back up to neighboring yards (9-12 area). Walk-in distance to some sites can be substantial (see sites 49, 59, 61, etc.) so be sure to read site descriptions carefully, but 61 in particular offers greater privacy. The sites aren't always level. There are no photos on the reservation website, so I've tried to capture most, but not all, here.

No alcohol or pets allowed. 

The are nearby beaches, hikes, Cape Cod Rail Trail and other biking opportunities are nearby. If you don't have a bike, you can easily rent one from nearby shops.

It won't be for everyone, but if you want a campground that is less expensive, caters to tents and trailers rather than the big rigs, this may be for you!
