Camping: LDWF maintains five primitive camping areas on Richard K. Yancey WMA. There are all-weather access roads as well as a source of potable water at the Shell Road camping area.

Richard K. Yancey WMA lies between the Mississippi and Red rivers, beginning north of Lower Old River. The WMA’s terrain is typically flat to depressed; the only significant changes in relief are elevated roads, levees, and a large manmade sand ridge. Numerous small lakes and bayous are formed by the area’s relatively poor drainage pattern. A large portion of the land is subject to annual spring flooding by the Red and Mississippi rivers.

Timber on the property consists of mixed bottomland hardwoods. The primary overstory species are bitter and sweet pecan, overcup and nuttall oak, bald cypress, honey locust, hackberry, sycamore, and green ash. There are almost pure stands of cottonwood and willow along the manmade sand ridge.

LDWF has planted approximately 265,000 hardwood seedlings on about 800 acres of former agricultural lands and annually maintains abandoned oil well sites and rights-of-way as wildlife openings.

Richard K. Yancy Sand Levee Campground

Sherburne WMA is located in the Morganza Floodway system of the Atchafalaya Basin between the Atchafalaya River and the East Protection Guide Levee. LDWF owns Sherburne WMA (11,800 acres) but manages the area as one unit along with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Atchafalaya National Wildlife Refuge (15,220 acres) and another 16,618 acres owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The area is classified as bottomland hardwoods with four dominant tree species groups: cottonwood-sycamore, oak-gum-hackberry-ash, willow-cypress-ash, and overcup oak-bitter pecan. Midstory species include seedlings of dominant species along with boxelder, maple, red mulberry, and rough-leaf dogwood. LDWF has managed the timber in some areas to improve habitat; ground cover in these areas is very dense and provides excellent habitat for many game and non-game species. Common ground cover species include rattan, greenbrier, Rubus sp., trumpet creeper, Virginia creeper, poison ivy, elderberry, and milkweed.

Sherburne WMA 

Waterfront river campsites along the banks of bayou amy across the street from the atchafalaya basin swamp and the levee. Just steps from Indian bayou wma. Some of the best fishing and hunting in the country surrounds the property. Safe secluded shaded and quiet area just minutes off interstate ten with some of the best food in the world just a short drive away. Six primitive camping spaces available for tent hammocks tiny house or rv. Spaces come with a shared cooking area and toilet/outdoor shower. Each site comes with fire pit and Wi-Fi. No more than 6 people per site. Dogs must be leashed with $25 pet fee. Alligators are in the water no swimming and other wildlife in the area.

**There is a tent-only, primitive camping area off of Parker Road on the South Tract.**

Tunica Hills WMA is composed of two separate tracts. The North Tract (2,346 acres) is immediately adjacent to the Louisiana State Penitentiary. The South Tract (4,156 acres) is off Old Tunica Road, which is part of the scenic Natchez Trace System and has been used for travel since colonial times.

The WMA’s terrain is characterized by rugged hills, bluffs, and ravines. The area lies at the southern end of the “loess blufflands” escarpment that follows the east bank of the Mississippi River south from its confluence with the Ohio River. These blufflands offer a diverse and unique habitat that supports some species of plants and animals not found elsewhere in Louisiana.

The forest on the area is classified as upland hardwood, with some loblolly pine and eastern red cedar mixed in on the ridge tops and creek terraces. Hardwoods include American beech; American holly; flowering magnolia; cherrybark, water, and cow oak; hickory; sweetgum; Osage orange; hackberry; eastern hophornbeam; ironwood; yellow poplar; elm; and maple. The understory varies from dense in younger areas of timber to fairly open in older areas. Common understory species are oak leaf hydrangea, two-winged silverbell, trifoliate orange, pawpaw, flowering dogwood, sweetleaf, spicebush, blackberry, and switchcane. At least 20 species of plants classified as rare in Louisiana are found on this area; two of these species have not been found anywhere else in the state.

Natchez State Park is located just 10 miles north historic Natchez, the oldest settlement on the Mississippi River. Prior to the Civil War, over half of the millionaires in the entire United States lived in Natchez, constructing elegant mansions unrivaled in size and elegance by any in the nation. Most of these splendid homes were spared during the Civil War, and many are now open for tours. Natchez State Park is also famous in its own right. The largest bass in Mississippi history, a largemouth weighing 18.15 pounds, was caught in Natchez lake in 1992.  50 Developed Camping sites, 8 Tent Camping sites, 10 Lakeside Vacation Cabin units, and a Laundry Facility located in the Campground B bathhouse.

Louisiana is known as Cajun country, where the land there was formed from sediment washed down by the Mississippi River, forming huge deltas and massive areas of coastal marsh and bayous with alligators and tree frogs and trees lined with spanish moss. Ibis and egrets fly through longleaf pine forests and wet savannas are filled with orchids, pitcher plants and sundews. Camping in Louisiana is an experience like no other. Whether it’s by RV, tent or just under the starlit sky, camping in Louisiana is an adventure unlike anywhere else in the United States. 


But it’s not all wetlands and marshes. Enjoy the best of coastal camping in Louisiana’s beachside community of Grand Isle. Located where Highway 1 meets the Gulf of Mexico, it’s the closest Louisiana beach from Baton Rouge and New Orleans, making these destinations a convenient day trip while you’re camping. 


Grand Isle is, in fact, an island and a town, with small, locally-owned shops and a state park just made for camping. With 63 sites available, Grand Isle State Park is a great place to camp on the beach and cook the seafood you just caught during July’s Grand Isle Tarpon Rodeo, an event that brings together the best saltwater fishermen in the world. Or, if you like bird watching, the Grand Isle Migratory Bird Festival offers plenty of opportunities to see a myriad of bird species return home from South America. Of course, there’s plenty of swimming, hiking, crabbing and boating in Grand Isle as well. 


Another great place for camping in Louisiana is Tunica Hills, which belongs to the Bluff Hills portion of the Mississippi Valley Loess Plains and extends from the Natchez, Mississippi area to St. Francisville, Louisiana. Managed by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, the Tunica Hills Wildlife Area is northwest of St. Francisville and covers more than 5,900 acres of rolling hills and scenic beauty.


Remember when I talked about the wetland and marshes? Tunica Hills isn’t anything like that; in fact, it’s unlike any other area in Louisiana. In Tunica Hills, you’ll find springs and waterfalls, rugged terrain, cliffs 90 feet high, deep gorges and lush, diverse plant life and animals you won’t find anywhere else in the state.  


And while Tunica Hills is known for hunting, a variety of other activities offer campers plenty to do such as horseback riding, hiking, ATV riding and sightseeing. And if you’re a birding enthusiast, then you’ve hit the jackpot because rare birds such as the Coopers hawk and worm-eating warbler live within the thick forests there. It’s no wonder John James Audubon was inspired to paint his famous bird series there in the early 1800s.

Plantation RV Park

Chicot State Park is located in South Central Louisiana and is comprised of 6,400 acres of hills and water to explore. A fisherman's dream, Lake Chicot's cool, clean waters are home to largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill and red-ear sunfish. The park itself hosts a boat house, three boat launches and boat rental facilities to make fishing that much easier, or an opportunity for campers who just want to enjoy the waters via boat! For hikers and bikers, there is a beautiful trail encircling Lake Chicot that is perfect for walking or cycling and enjoying the scenery of the park. The park is home to the Louisiana State Arboretum, a magical magnolia-beech forest, in addition to a playground and a water playground -  perfect for keeping the little ones busy! 

Campsite A is perfect for someone who wants to be truly secluded in the woods. Tucked away in the trees, is a private camper's paradise. Completely shaded by the trees, it's the coolest tent in the summer months. It's the perfect tent to escape the sweltering heat while still enjoying the natural beauty the Louisiana has to offer. With all of our rentals, you will have access to all of Chicot's fishing, hiking, and other outdoor activities. This tent is within a 5 minute walk, or a 1 minute drive from the splash pad. It's a small waterpark with fountains and sprayers for kids to play in! This site is fully shaded tucked away in the trees with parking at the tent provided. If it's muddy and rainy, we recommend parking on the side of the road within 20 feet of the tent instead of pulling into the site. 

Please note: The park gate closes at 9pm so please arrive prior to ensure you can access your campsite. Also keep in mind, some photos on this listing are of points of interest at Chicot State Park and are not necessarily right at your campsite.

Guest Access:
Campers will have access to a primitive on-site bathroom facilities (see below) as well as the bathrooms and showers available in other areas of the state park.

Toilets: Every campsite is equipped with a camp toilet (we call it the Tentrr Loo). This is a simple wooden box with a toilet seat and a bucket inside. To use, line the bucket with a CleanWaste Sani-Bag supplied at the camp prior to use. Afterwards, simply tie the bag up and place it in a trash bag. CleanWaste Sani-Bags use a NASA-developed gelling/deodorizing agent that helps prevent spills and keeps everyone safe and clean.

Showers: Every Signature campsite comes with a Coleman Sun Shower. The sun shower has a reservoir that holds up to 5 gallons of water, potentially enough for multiple showers. It's constructed of heat-locking material that warms the water when it's left in the sun, even on cool days.

The canvas tent is equipped with a propane Heater Buddy.

Interaction with Guests:
Upon check out, you should leave-no-trace of your stay and be sure your campsite is returned to its natural glory! While Tentrr does not charge a cleaning fee, we do expect campsites to be left how they were found. After you check out, take everything you brought in and be sure to leave your trash at the designated location on the property. 

If a CampKeeper submits an incident report after your stay that details evidence of trash or damage to the campsite or state park property, Tentrr reserves the right to charge a minimum cleaning fee of $50. Just make sure to follow the Camper Manual posted at your campsite and you'll be set!

This tent edges right along the woods and is off on its own. This is the only tent that you cannot park right next to. Parking is about 30 feet away up a slight incline.

For hikers and bikers, there is a beautiful trail encircling Lake Chicot that is perfect for walking or cycling and enjoying the scenery of the park. The park is home to the Louisiana State Arboretum, a magical magnolia-beech forest, in addition to a playground and a water playground -  perfect for keeping the little ones busy! 

This campsite is equipped with a pre-set sturdy canvas tent on its own wooden deck platform. The tent is furnished with a queen-size memory foam mattress and side tables. A picnic table, fire pit with a grill, a solar shower, and portable camp loo are also provided, and campers are able to use the park's restroom facilities as well. There is an additional pop-up tent provided for extra guests, but you will have to bring your own air mattresses/sleeping pads for this tent.
