Homochitto National Forest is home to Clear Springs Lake Rec Area, a US Forest Service campground set within a wooded corridor of southwest Mississippi roughly seven miles from campsites near Roxie. The campground is divided into two loops. Sites 13 through 22 in the upper loop are better suited to larger RVs, while sites 1 through 12 near the lake work well for tents and families with kids. All sites have water and electric hookups, and a dump station is available for RV users.
The lake is a central draw. Campers use it for swimming and fishing, and a short loop trail with boardwalk sections circles the water. A longer trail network extends into the surrounding forest for hiking and mountain biking, with some routes covering more than ten miles. Several sites sit directly along the lake's edge; others are set back in heavier tree cover. Cheri H. describes the campground as "definitely off the beaten track but worth the drive," noting the wooden rail picnic areas and steps built into some sites. CCC-era architecture is still visible in some of the structures, including a large pavilion suitable for group gatherings.
Cell coverage is limited. AT&T users have reported signal only near the bathhouses, so plan accordingly. Each loop has a bathhouse with hot showers and flush toilets, though cleanliness has varied depending on whether a campground host is present. Raccoons and opossums are active at night. Snakes, including water moccasins in and around the lake, have been reported by visitors.
The campground operates year-round on a first-come, first-served basis. Crowds are lighter on weekdays and during the off-season. The nearest resupply point is Natchez, so stocking up before heading in is worth doing. The access road is narrow in sections and has been described as rough. America the Beautiful pass discounts are accepted. Campers interested in camping near Homochitto National Forest will find additional options in the area, including dispersed sites at Clear Spring Road Dispersed -- Homochitto NF less than a mile away. This campground is a practical base for anyone prioritizing lake access, trail variety, and full hookups in a wooded national forest setting.
